Hi, I am also researching my Lewis ancestors in Powys in Mid Wales. I have a David Lewis born in 1813 in Llanyre but I don't know if he married. Llanyre is near Llandrindod Wells so is probably in the old county of Radnorshire. David's parents were Lewis Lewis and Lydia Bowen and grandfather was Rees Simon Lewis who was brother to David Lewis my 4 x great grandfather. This Lewis family originated in Llanafan Fawr in north Breconshire which is south west of Llandrindod Wells. They were a very infamous family. Looking for information on Ellen O’BRIEN/BRYAN b 1825 in Ireland. Think she was born in Ballindangan, Glanworth Co Cork. This assumption is based on an article that appeared in "Missing Friends " a series of books published by the New England Genealogical Society which reprinted ads in the Boston Pilot from 1831 to 1876. Ad placed by Ellen (O'BRYAN) CUMMINGS in 1875 her address as Taylorsville PO Luzerne Co PA. (This is Taylor borough of Scranton, now Lackawanna Co ) She was looking for her sister Margaret (O'BRYAN) CHUSIC (CUSICK/CUSACK) of Ballydangan, Co. Cork who came to US 16 yrs prior and had settled in Massachuetts. 2nd Ad names her as Margaret (O'BRIEN) CHUSIC and names her husband as William, her home as Ballindangan, parish of Glanworth, Co. Cork and coming to the US 18 or 19 years previous is sought by her sister Ellen O'BRIEN same address but to John CUMMINGS. Parish Glanworth is in the extreme northeast of Co Cork (not near the Beara Peninsula). Ellen O’BRIEN was married to John CUMMINS/CUMMINGS and they raised most of their family in the Rhymney, Tredgar area of Wales. Their family Ellen 1845; Michael 1853; Richard 1857; Andrew 1859; John 1862 were all born in Wales. They were members of the Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Tredgar. The CUMMINGS family came to US and daughter Catherine was born in Hastings on the Hudson, NY in 1865. They settled in the Scranton PA area (Old Forge, Minooka, Taylor areas). Their eldest daughter Ellen married Patrick SULLIVAN in 1863 in Rhymney, Wales. Would appreciate any information or suggestions. Please contact me Walton J. Sullivan at wsullivw@aol.com Walton J. Hello My name is Shona Klien and I maintain a web site www.cave-kids.com I am seeking a family of Arthur Cressey c.1912. Probably born in Hull, East Yorkshire One of six children of Grace Osborne and William Cressey. Understood to have spent his entire life in or around Milford Haven. Why he was the only member of his family to reside there, is a mystery, the only tangible fact is that his mother Grace Osborn probably lived there in her early years after moving from Ireland. Any pointers would be appreciated. regards Shona
Hi folks In response to an enquiry on the POWYS list, I thought the following would be of interest to everyone. Considering there is so much confusion with all these Llansantffraid/Llansantffraed's, etc. I thought I would dig up a list of them so that we can then know where each one is. This is taken from Bartholomew's 1904 Gazetteer, compiled from the 1901 census - is that a bad word at present? Llansaintffraid, ry.sta., Cam(brian) R., five and a half m. E. of Llanfyllin Llansaintfffraid yn Mechan, eccl. dist., Llansaintffraid par., Montgomeryshire; pop 835 Llansaintfraed, par. and seat, Monmouthshire, on river Usk, four and a half miles SE of Abergavenny; 290 acres, pop. 10. (Ehh! Is that right - ten??) Llansantffraid, par. and vil., Cardiganshire, in NW. of co--par., 4707 acres, pop. 905; vil., 11 miles SW of Aberystwyth: P.O. Llansantffraid Glan Conway, par. and vil., Denbighshire, on river Conway; 5281 acres, pop. 1127. has mineral spring. Llansantffraid Glyn Ceiriog, par. and vil., Denbigshire, in S. of co.--par., 5949 acres, pop. 994; vil., 2 miles SW of Llangollen; P.O; T.O; called Glyn. There are mfrs. of flannels; and also stone and slate quarries. Llansantffraid Glyn Dyfrdwy, par. and vil., Merioneth in NE of co., 2 miles E of Corwen sta.; 679 acres, pop. 176. Llansantfraed, par. Brecknockshire, in SE. of co., on river Usk and Brecon Canal, 7 miles SE. of Brecknock; 2209 acres, pop. 191 Llansantfraed in Elvel, par. and seat, Radnorshire, on river Edw, four and a half miles NE. of Builth; 4717 acres, pop. 230. Llansantffraid Cwmdeuddwr, par., W. Radnorshire, 1 mileW. of Rhayader; 39,172 acres, pop. 1279. See Radnorshire. Llansantffraid Deythur, par., NE. Montgomeryshire 6 miles E. of Llanfyllin; 2816 acres, pop. 440; P.O.; T.O., called Llansaintffraid. Llansantffraid Pool, par., NE Montgomeryshire, six and a half miles E. of Llanfyllin; 3471 acres, pop. 729. Well, that certainly warms things up. I thought there were only four! Note the different spellings! That taught me something - so none of us will refer to them ever again as simply Llansanffraid? Will we? Toodle-oo Graham P.S. I now have at home a photocopy of the 1830 Pigot's Directory of NORTH WALES if anyone wants anything looked up. Admittedly, it does not give you much, only the principal towns and the principal business folk - in the main. 1830 Pigot's was only divided into North & South - chopped the county in two! Bit like America in the old days.
Looking for information on John CUMMINS/CUMMINGS and his family. John was born somewhere in Ireland about 1823. He married Ellen O’BRIEN/BRYAN b 1825. Ellen was originally from Ballindangan, Glanworth, Co Cork. I do not know whether John and Ellen O’BRIEN CUMMINS were married in Ireland or in Rhymney area of Wales, but think they were married in Ireland. John worked in the Rhymney Iron Works. They settled and lived in 13 Furnace Row Rhymney where they raised their family starting in 1845 with daughter Ellen; Michael 1853, Richard 1857, Andrew 1859, John 1862 and Nora/Honora 1863. The CUMMINS were members of the Church of the Immaculate Conception Tredgar. Their daughter Ellen CUMMINS married Patrick SULLIVAN from St. John’s Catholic Church in Rhymney in 1863. It appears the family was therefore in Wales from at least 1845-1865. The CUMMINS/CUMMINGS family immigrated to the US and first settled in Hastings on the Hudson where daughter Catherine CUMMINGS was born in 1865. The CUMMINGS family settled in the Old Forge, Minooka, Taylor areas of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Looking for any suggestions and information. I have developed an extensive data base of Irish in and around the Scranton area and I am willing to exchange information. Please contact me at wsullivw@aol.com Walton J. Hi all, I have had many messages asking both about the future of Channel 5 Text and about Tree Tops. Firstly Tree Tops has NOT closed down. All messages/queries sent will appear on the television screen on Sky News Text. Channel 5 at present have a skeleton text service showing due to the fact that it is open for tenders to decide on a new owner of this service. Therefore at the moment the messages are not being shown on Channel 5 text. When the new owners are announced I will be speaking to them about returning Tree Tops to their text service. Until then, on a temporary basis, I am willing to put a copy of the screened messages onto the Tree Tops News Mailing List. These will be the edited version of the messages sent to Tree Tops. This would be very advantageous to everybody as it will enable those in other countries to see what is shown on the television screen. If anybody has any objections then do please say so. I WILL delete all postal addresses before posting them to the Mailing List. Obviously there will be some which have been sent to me by people not on e-mail. If anyone wishes to contact one of these submitters, then please write to me off list for the postal address, quoting the reference number. Putting the messages on this way, without addresses, you may feel that I have edited the message too harshly. Eight lines are allowed on screen and unfortunately many peoples addresses take up a lot of the allocated space. All I ask is that you please respect my copyright and DO NOT forward a copy of any of these messages to any other mailing list or place them on any web site. Eventually, when time permits, surnames from previous messages will be placed, as a collection, onto http://freespace.virgin.net/tt.indexes/ which is one of Tree Tops web sites. Looking for information on Patrick SULLIVAN b 1842 and his brother Florence b 1845 born in Ireland, probably in CO Cork. Patrick and Florence immigrated to Wales where they worked in the Rhymney Iron Works. Not sure when they moved to Wales but do not believe their parents John and Julia SULLIVAN were in Wales with them. Their father John died prior to 1863. Patrick and his brother Florence were members of St. John’s Catholic Church in Rhymney. Patrick married Ellen CUMMINS in 1863, their marriage was solemnized at Bedwelty Monmouth. Ellen CUMMINS parents John and Ellen O’BRIEN/BRYAN CUMMINS were members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tredgar. Patrick and Ellen CUMMINGS SULLIVAN emigrated to the Old Forge, Minooka, Taylor areas of Scranton Pennsylvania in 1865. Florence married Ellen GLYNN and raised their family in the Scranton area. Patrick and Florence were coal miners. I have developed an extensive data base on Irish in Scranton area and I am willing to share information. Would appreciate any information or suggestions. Can anyone give me some insight into what kind of documentation one would have had to have in late 1800's to immigrate to Canada from Wales. I suspect they didn't have picture passports. How would one have proved they were who they claimed to be...Annmarie
Hi Gwen, on the FTM cd 354 Passenger and Immigration Lists Index I find there was a Huguenot settlement in the commonwealth of Virginia in 1700.The source of some info was a WALTER LeSUEUR TURNER. Communications fromGovernor Francis Nicholson of Virginia regarding Huguenot Regugees on Board Ship "Mary and Ann". In the Huguenot, vol.6(1933) pp.82-86. Source Annotation: Lists refugees from London who arrived at the James River on July 23, 1700.Also in Boyer, Ship passenger Lists, the south,pp 86-89. Also Tepper, New World Immigrants, vol 1, pp 439-443. Huguenot Settlers in North America and Europe The Depew family is of noble origin. Barthelmy Dupuy was born in 1650 and became a trusted lieutenant in the guard of Louis XIV. In 1682 he retired and married Countess Susannah Lavillon. In 1685 he escaped to Germany where he stayed fourteen years, then went to England in 1699 and from there to Virginia where he died in 1714. Chauncy Depew is a descendant. The above is from a cd containing Huguenot histories. I believe if you contacted the Historical Society of Virginia, located in Richmond, Va., they may be able to refer you to more info sources. Good hunting, Kay -- Genealogy without documentation is mythology!
Hi Ron, The name Lewis Lewis jumped out at me as it occurs in my extended Lewis family of Llanafan Fawr in Breconshire. Unfortunately the date for James' birth does no tie in. The one I have was born in 1777 and was the son of Lewis Simon Lewis and Sarah Davies. This Lewis is the brother to my 4 x great grandfather David Lewis. He died in 1791 so it does seem impossible that he is your James' father although it is interesting to see that one of James' children was Lewis and another Sarah. This Lewis family of mine was very notorious in the area of Llanafan Fawr and Lewis Lewis and his son Lewis Lewis were the most infamous of the lot. I will give you details off line if you would like to know more. Regards, Margaret Harvey
I am searching for records of my ancestor Sylvester Deputy. He was allegedly born in Wales in 1681 and migrated to the American Colony with a "company" about 1700. This family were French Huguenots who fled their homeland and changed their name to Dupaty later spelling it Deputy. The original name could have been DuPuy. Can any one do a look-up on this surname or tell me of online records to check? This family has been a stumbling block for me; no early wills or records found in the USA to point me to a Wales connection. any help would be greatly appreciated and I would reciprocate in any way I might be able. Gwen in Texas, USA
Hi Hazel As far as IU know there is no connection at moment but can't get back far enough yet. There are SPARKES in Pontypridd S. Wales now though. This lady is from Portskewett Monmouthshire and I realize now that I put her maiden name; sorry brain must be addled. She married an Albert HUMPHRIES in Portskewett but then left and went to Pembs. She may still have been known as HUMPHRIES there. Anyone on list please note married name. Thanks chris
Hello all, A small correction please, in my message under the same subject header: TW Davies would have arrived in Ontario when it was Upper Canada [up to 1841] or when it was Canada West [1841 to 1867]. Sorry about that. I knew better. Ron Davies Surrey, BC Canada
Hello all, I'm searching for my GGGrandparents James and Berry Lewis of Wales and who came to Canada in 1840 settling in the township of Walpole, Haldimand County, Ontario [then Upper Canada which became Canada West in 1841 and Ontario in 1867]. Based upon several census returns, James was born in Wales circa 1794 while his wife Berry, was born in Wales in 1800. I have NO clues as to whom their parents were nor where in Wales they were born. When they sailed for Canada, they were accompanied by their seven eldest children, namely Lewis, John, Hannah, Mary, Sarah and Thomas born in Wales between 1822 and 1838 inclusive. Their youngest child, Ann, was born in Upper Canada in 1844. I'm descended from son Lewis Lewis and one of his daughters, Victoria Lewis, my grandmother. I'd be most appreciative if any reader can lead me to identify the Welsh roots of this Lewis family. Thanks all. Ron Davies Surrey, BC Canada
Hello all, Looking for information about my Great Great Grandfather, Thomas William Davies, born in Wales circa 1824 but could be as late as 1826 if some census returns are to be believed. I have absolutely nothing else about him 'til his recorded marriage in Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada [then Upper Canada or Western Canada] in September, 1852 in a double ceremony with his new bride's brother and his new bride officiated over by a Wesleyan Methodist minister. I can find nobody in all families members found and contacted, who can shed further light upon his pre-marriage days. He and his bride resided in both Dresden and Camden Township, Kent County until 1882 when they moved to Assiniboia of the North West Territories [now Saskatchewan] to homestead. Their four surviving youngest children travelled with them, one just married the prior month. TW and his wife, the former Alice Blackburn, are buried in West Carlyle Cemetery, SK. Alice's family were United Empire Loyalists from Pennsylvania where they arrived in the 18th century from Loughgall, Kilmore, Armagh, Ireland. I have no idea whether or not TW had parents or siblings in Canada but I have a suspicion that he might have arrived as a British Redcoat head- quartered in the major British military barracks at Chatham, ON. Please note that this is pure speculation but many soldiers mustered out and were given land in the new Canada. By the way, TW is shown as `Davis' from Ireland in a couple of census returns and in the LDS records but he's found as a land holder and a tailor in Kent records, as DAVIES and he signed himself DAVIES in matters concerning his homestead papers. All his children are known by Davies. I'll be appreciative of any lead or clue. Thank you all Ron Davies Surrey, BC Canada
Hello I was wondering if you have any Sparkes connections in Norfolk? I have a William Sparkes from Norfolk who married a Welsh lady - Sarah but she did not settle in Norfolk so they moved back to Wales, Nantemaole ?, Rhonda I think. I believe they had a son Eddie, who may still be alive I do not know who lives or lived in Letchworth. Does this make any sense? I would love to find the stray portions of this family as up till now they have all come from Norfolk and I could do with the excuse for a holiday!!! The following article was found in the Wilkes-Barre (PA) Record, 3 Jan 1896, Page 7. If anyone is interested in receiving a copy of this obituary, please send me your mailing address. (Instead of submitting this to any specific Mailing List, I am submitting it to the General list in the hopes that it will be seen by a more diverse group.) "Mrs. Catherine Griffith, one of the best known residents of the county, died yesterday at her home, 27 North Sherman street, after an illness of six days of paralysis, aged 77 years. She was the widow of the late Nathaniel Griffith, who was killed by accident in March 1877. She was also a sister-in-law of the late ex-county treasurer, John T. Griffith. Mrs. Griffith came from Cwmglo, Merthyr Tydvil, Wales, (a beautiful spot where stand the ruins of one of the oldest non-conformist churches in Wales) with her father, Benjamin Evans, and family 70 years ago, and settled in Cumbola, Schuylkill County. She was married July, 1840, and brought up the following children: The late Mrs. Henry H. Jones of the Heights, Mrs. Daniel W. Evans, wife of superintendent Daniel W. Evans of Williamstown, Pa.; Mrs. Thomas Kerr of Plymouth; undertaker Benjamin F. Griffith of Nanticoke; Mrs. Daniel D. Roderick of Pottsville; and Miss Kate S. Griffith, who resided with her mother. She leaves also twenty-eight grand-children and seven great-grandchildren.... [Remainder deals with funeral arrangements.]" Nancy Cook Pasadena, MD, USA
