    3. Dear Avie, You will get plenty of replies on this one. It used to be the case that there were no surnames in Wales but that has died out except for a tiny minority. Ap means 'son of'. Llywelyn the Great was Llywelyn ap Iorwerth. His father was Iorwerth ab Owain Gwynedd. The ab was because of the vowel 'O'. Gradually, the English forced them to use surnames. In between, the ap disappeared. e.g. my gggg grandfather was Morris Jones but HIS father was John Thomas. (Jones means son of John). And HIS father was Thomas Rowland. On another line, my ggg grandfather was Williams. His Father was William Evans and HIS father was Evan Williams. The surname Bowen is from ab Owain. Probert is from ap Robert. This system was the Patronymic system. If not clear, please ask anything. 1. [WALES-GEN] PENICK/PENIX/PENIK/PENNOCK
    2. Hi All I have just started doing my research in Wales. I am researching the PENICK surname. I am trying to find William Penick who we believe was born in Prince Edward County, VA. His father came from Wales. He went from Prince Edward County, VA to New Kent County, VA. I have several questions that I hope someone can help me with the answer. I was told that in Wales the name of the children were named after the fathers. Example ( Edward apt son of William). Is this information correct? If so, what does the apt mean? If it is not correct, then how does the naming of children go. All advice or web sites to look at will be greatly appreciated. Thank you MAY GOD BLESS ALL THIS DAY. Avie

    1. Re: [WALES-GEN] Welsh drovers into Sussex and hampshire
    2. Brian Harvey
    3. Hi, According to the book "The Drovers' Roads of Wales" By Fay Goodwin and Shirley Toulson the Welsh were driving their cattle hundreds of miles over the mountains and into eastern parts of England. From the time of the Norman Conquest to the middle of the 1800s any traveller in Wales at certain times of the year would find the roads blocked with cattle, sheep pigs and geese. Corgis were used to keep the herds together and many tales were told of these dogs finding their own way home from Kent to North Wales. One of the Drovers' roads went to Hereford and there is no reason why the final destination of the herds and flocks wouldn't be Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex. In fact Sussex has a border with Kent. Last year we drove (in a car!!)along two of the Drovers' Roads in Mid Wales. We travelled from Rhayader to Devil's Bridge through some wonderful remote countryside we returned through Tregaron and on to Beulah in Breconshire. It would have been a very difficult for any traveller on foot and the life herding those animals must have been extremely dangerous. I have no evidence that any of my ancestors were drovers but they all lived off the land in Mid Wales and something would have had to be done to supplement the family income with many mouths to feed. Are you able to give any idea where he was born or living so it could be narrowed down. 3. The following article was found in the Wilkes-Barre (PA) Record, 28 Jan 1897, Page 5. If anyone is interested in receiving a copy of this obituary, please send me your mailing address. (Instead of submitting this to any specific Mailing List, I am submitting it to the General list in the hopes that it will be seen by a more diverse group.) "Great sympathy is felt for David Packer of Plains in his bereavement, having lost the "wife of his youth" so unexpectedly after a brief but severe illness, leaving three motherless children, one only three weeks old. Mrs. Packer's maiden name was WILLIAMS, being the daughter of William and Margaret Williams. Her mother died when Elizabeth Ann was two years and six months old, and when reaching the age of six years she was deprived of her father, he being one of four victims of an explosion at the Prospect colliery. After the death of her father she was taken into the care of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas David Williams as their own child, and with the interest of a father and mother did they nourish her until death separated them. She was born Oct. 17, 1871, married to David Packer Nov. 17, 1890. Their married life was short, but fraught with happiness. She had been a member of the Miner Congregational Church from childhood. The funeral services were held at the church, the pastor and Revs. D.J. Jones and R.R. Jones officiating. Thomas Thomas, ironmonger, Merthyr Tydfil, William Thomas and Evan Thomas, ironmonger, Aberdare, and Edward Williams of Glen Neath were her uncles on her mother's side." 1. [WALES-GEN] GENUKI Page Maintainers Needed
    2. List Admin
    3. Forwarded, by request of Brian Randell Hi We are seeking volunteers to fill vacancies that have arisen for county page developers in GENUKI, the UK & Ireland Genealogical information service, particularly but not solely in Scotland. GENUKI is widely regarded as the premier on-line source for information about UK genealogy - it now contains more than 30,000 pages, occupying over 450 Mbytes of information, and over fifty people (many of whom have further helpers) are involved in its maintenance. The counties concerned are: ENGLAND - Berkshire, London, Middlesex, Shropshire, Somerset, Surrey SCOTLAND - Banffshire, Berwickshire, Bute, Dunbartonshire, Dumfriesshire, Kincardineshire, Midlothian, Moray, Nairnshire, Peebles-shire, Renfrewshire, Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, Shetland, Stirlingshire, Sutherland, West Lothian WALES - Merionethshire, Monmouthshire The main requirements of county page volunteers are threefold: 1. Either considerable experience of family research in the specific area(s), or local knowledge and contacts within the area. 2. The ability to create simple HTML pages directly and also maintain them (including a basic understanding of HTML, directory structure management, and FTP). 3. Lots of enthusiasm! The work involved in taking responsibility for a county page is described at http://www.genuki.org.uk/org/guide.html. The amount of work that county page developers do varies considerably, and is of course governed by the amount of time they have available, the extent to which they can enlist the help of others - as indeed many have successfully done - and the level of ambition that they set for their pages. This is of course influenced by what other volunteers are managing elsewhere on their GENUKI county and parish pages - many of which have become rather impressive! However, we are keen to get to the stage where all the rest of our counties have at least basic information pages for all of their parishes. I'd be happy to try and answer any queries from potential volunteers for the above counties - and would also encourage people interested in helping with any of the other counties to contact the respective county page maintainer directly. (His/her name is to be found via the link to GENUKI maintainers near the foot of the GENUKI main page, http://www.genuki.org.uk/.) Anyone interested in helping with the Ireland section of GENUKI, which also has a number of vacancies, is invited to contact Richard White <white@hiwaay.net>. cheers Brian Randell Brian.Randell@newcastle.ac.uk --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Hello everyone! I had previously posted a listing looking for an uncle living at this address : Rhoslan, 17 Chapel St. Llandudno, North Wales. His name was John H. DULAKE. A kind gentleman informed me that there was no one living there by that name. I am presuming then, that he might have passed away. Would some kind soul be willing to give me the name of the cemetery and /or the local newspaper that would have covered this area? I would like to be able to check it for a possible obit notice. He might have died within the past couple of years. Would appreciate anyone's help. Thank you so much for your time. Lynne in BC,Canada
