According to the powers that be my computer has in this past week frozen about seven or eight times, lost some data once, failed to load up at the start with the virus checker at least twice, sat solid and uncaring three times whilst in my desk-top progamme and behaved rather heniously on the internet by bouncing me out of it when I least expected it. BILL GATES YOU HAVE A LOT TO ANSWER FOR! If it was a horse, you would shoot it, you would have no choice. If it was a Chyrsler V8, you would turn it over to the wreckers IMMEDIATELY, and even it if was a new Toyota 4WD you would turn it upside down and put it out to pasture as fast as you could. Apart from all this, I love it/he/she, or whatever you may call it. Mainly because it/he/she connects me with the world wide genealogy sites and caring lists such as CLWYD, POWYS, SHROPSHIRE & WALES-GEN, and therefore brings me into touch with those loving and gentle folk on the other side of the world whose genealogy email reaches me faster than the speeding bullet, and whose help and thoughts lead me on to further genealogical exploration. So, no matter what the downsides might be with MICROSOFT and the other associated (or perhaps non associated) computer packages, I will still stand by my square-eyed computer and its sometimes crazy functionings, knowing that it is only human frailities that have made it that way, and that no one is really to blame, least of all ourselves, and that the world is still always a very gentle and caring place when it comes down to co-operation. So, here's to all you listers of the various sites. May you suffer graciously the little intimidations of your computers and cheerfully rejoice at the small gains you find on the internet lists, because without them your genealogy research would be so much poorer. In these troubled times let us give thanks for being able to belong to such wonderful and caring lists. I find no better. Bless you all Graham *******Lest We Forget: Remember the 11th of September*******
Graham, Would it be alright if I passed on your wonderful comments to some others Rootsweb lists that I am on? I agree with you wholeheartingly. Jennifer in ND

Hi everyone. I have just spent hours on the net looking at this web site. I have found my two grandfathers there and possibly more relatives but will have to check them out first. This is the web site which seems to have a lot of links to things related to WW1 and helpful info on other things to do with looking for your ancestors: http://www.pitt.edu/~pugachev/greatwar/ww1.html I found a lot of people from the UK in Soldiers of the First World War (Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Forces), with names of their wives, mothers, fathers, etc. on the info page. Check it out, you might find that lost relative. I wish to say a BIG THANK-YOU to PAM from OZ, who put this site on the Hampshire mailing list as if she hadn't I wouldn't have found more info on both my grandfathers. Best regards Heather Smith
Hi Yvonne, You have the birth date of your mother-in-law and know the area so it should be quite easy to purchase a copy of her Birth Certificate from the relevant Registry Office. It will cost £6.50 plus a stamped addressed envelope. The certificate will give the name of her mother and her father and the place they lived. There are offices for Caernarvonshire at Aberconwy, Bangor, Caernarvon and Dwyfor which is in Pwllheli. It should be easy to get the phone numbers from Directory Enquiries. I have the address if you want them. I have found the Welsh Registrars of B.M.D. extremely helpful.. I don't know how far you are from Portsmouth or Aldershot as there are Family History Centres of the Latter-day Saints in those places. You would be able to look at Births, Marriages and Deaths on the films for the whole of the British Isles. I have the phone numbers if you want them as you have to make an appointment. This is being cross-posted, so apologies if you receive several copies of this! We have just started to send out a regular, monthly Admin posting as there seems to be a sudden splurge of subscribers to ALL the lists that are run between us (Carol & Julie), with many new to the internet, so, here are some basic suggestions for the newer members & reminders for the regulars **** Remember we're all living is different parts of the world and what is obvious to you not obvious to other list members. Please be patient and polite to fellow list members. Treat others as you wish to be treated. **** It is useful to indicate the State, County, Country of your research Eg: Alberta Canada, Wagga Wagga NSW Australia, Exeter Devon. If possible can the two letter abbreviations used in the USA be replaced with the full names. **** The more information you include in your question the more likely you are to get an answer and The more specific your question, the most likely you are to get answer. **** "I've looked everywhere", it does helps to mention where "everywhere" is so others can point you to new places to look rather than telling you to do what you've already done. ***** Consider using the Free Family Tree and We'll Meet Again Service, provided FREE by Carol of Tree Tops http://freespace.virgin.net/tree.tops By submitting a message to the various services Carol provides, you might find that missing link. Check out the web page for further details. Remember, when you have an elusive ancestor, anything is worth a try. **** I'd like to encourage people to send replies to the LIST rather than direct to the person The advantages of sending replies to the list: there's probably others that are interested in the answer, it might get a discussion and it lets others know if the question has been answered. **** Please remember the correct procedure for unsubscribing and subscribing. Send a blank email with the word subscribe or unsubscribe in the body of the message. The address to send to is the address with the word request in it. EG treetops-news-L-request@rootsweb.com etc Please post from the address that you are subscribed under, otherwise the Rootsweb robot thinks it is spam & the posting bounces to us for forwarding. ***If you respond to an forwarded email please, please make sure that you reply to the correct address, and do not click reply to sender, otherwise Carol or I are swamped with the replies! **** Use suitable subject headings, especially if you receive the digest version of postings. Not everyone reads everything and often time dictates we skim read the subjects lines looking for something interesting or relevant. An email that says "My family research" doesn't tell us much. Another tip is to type SURNAMES in capitals, so they attract attention ****Remember ALL posts to Rootsweb mailing lists are archived, so it is always checking there. Following the links from the main Rootsweb URL, at www.rootsweb.com or from http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and then inserting the name of the list whose archives you wish to search. **** FINALLY, If you wish to post something to the list that is NOT specific to the list, For example new mailing lists, please send details to the admin address or either of us directly. ************************************************************************* To join the following MAILING LISTS just add on -L-request@rootsweb.com to the end of the Required name. Hi Listers I'm having great difficulty locating an ancestor who emigrated to America and would be delighted if any one of our American listers could give me any help. - Let me explain .... My mother's uncle JOHN HENRY JONES born 1860 in Portmadoc, emigrated to America circa 1888/89. I do not know his port of embarkation or indeed his port of arrival, but I do have a letter that he wrote dated July 31st 1889 when he was working for a railroad company called 'Camino de Fierro Nacional Mexicana' .in LAGUNA (? New Mexico ?). At that time he was expecting his wife LIZZIE to set out from the UK and arrive at LAREDO Texas quite soon. I can find no trace of him on any published shipping lists nor indeed can I find any trace of Lizzie, but I am not sure whether he and Lizzie married before he left for America or when she arrived in the States. My next positive location for him is a letter dated October 31st 1938 when he was living at 1110 Kansas Avenue, TOPEKA , Kansas. He now had a son ALBERT H JONES married to EMMA and living in Chicago. From the tone of his letter his wife was now dead and also his daughter MINNIE E JONES both having died of cancer. I have cuttings from a newspaper at the time of Minnie's death(unfortunately no dates shown) in tribute to the virtues of MINNIE as a well loved school teacher at Topeka High School having graduated from Washburn college in 1910. She apparently lived at 1400 Harrison Street Topeka and was buried in the Topeka cemetery. John Henry Jones died 4th August 1944 and I believe that he is also buried in the Topeka cemetery. I wonder if the cemetery has its MIs listed somewhere. I've tried to locate all of them in the American Social Security files but with no success. Any help or advice that you can offer will be most welcome. Thanks in anticipation. Ron Sellers Northampton UK mailto:rojulian@enodoc17.freeserve.co.uk
