Waldrop, a rural community eleven miles west of Carthage on Farm Road 1251 in western Panola County, was first settled after the Civil War.qv From the 1870s through the 1890s a school, known as Liles School after its teacher, operated in the area. This was in the Dallas Morning News this morning. Joan Elizabeth Waldrip WALDRIP, JOAN ELIZABETH. On June 17th 2003, Joan Elizabeth Waldrip slipped peacefully from this life and into the next. She was an extraordinary and beautiful woman whose capacity for love was matched only by the enormous shoulders on which she could, and would, carry us all. She was wise, nurturing, compassionate and a master of the gentle, yet firm, kick to the behind. Not too hard, not too soft. Just enough to show you the straight and narrow. Her gentle persuasion and loving touch influenced thousands of lives in her 27 years as a Dormitory manager at SMU. As if that didn't keep her busy enough, for 20 years, she was also a Deputy Commander in the Dallas County Sheriffs Reserves. And in her free time, she managed to raise 4 sons. Her strength was the stuff of legend. So too, was her honesty, sense of humor, and ultimately, her inability to surrender to anything that threatened to cast a shadow upon her spirit. Even in death, she will continue to rustle the papers of our lives. Because a force like hers can never truly be gone. In Heaven, she will join her parents Stanley & Minnie Adams and her husband, Ben Waldrip. She is survived by her brother Dick Adams of Spokane WA; sons, Gary Allen, Greg Allen, Larry Waldrip and Jack Waldrip; her grandchildren, Elizabeth & Emily Allen and Christian & Haven Waldrip; nieces, Cynthia Price & Lynn Sislo; nephew Chuck Adams; the thousands of kids she shepherded through SMU, and her brothers and sisters in the Sheriffs department. There is a desk waiting for her in the Great Beyond, for there is much work for her there. And when our time comes, she will be the first to greet us. She will put her arms around us, pull us to her, and we will know that we are safe, that we are loved, that we are home. Then, as always, she will point us in the right direction. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heartland Hospice of Dallas. And finally, the family requests that you open your hearts, say a prayer, and tell those closest to you how much you love them. Services will be 12:00 P.M. Saturday June 21, 2003 at Restland Memorial Chapel. Interment to follow at Restland Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
