Summary of the families of Joseph & John Waldrop of Amelia Co., Va and Luke Waldrop of Hanover Co., Va. PART I: JOSEPH WALTRIP OFAMELIA CO., VA Joseph's name has been spelled numerous ways, including Worldrop, but most of his descendants' names eventully became WALTRIP. Family legend says Joseph was born (est.) 1715 in Wales, but there is no evidence. It is rather certain that he was an indentured servant. In 1737-1738, he was living in Amelia County, Va in the household of Thomas Hodge who paid taxes for him. From 1738-1747, Amelia County taxes for a group of men (including Joseph) were paid by William Greene. It was not until 1748 that Joseph paid his own tax. Inasmuch as Hodge and Greene paid taxes for these men during this time, it indicates these men were indentured servants whose "master" was paying the tithes for them. It is believed Joseph married at least twice, and perhaps three times. There is no information about his first wife; His second wife was ELIZABETH VEST (West); and his third wife was ANN. Joseph's will offers clues about the mothers of his children. Assuming he has used the old style in the way he words his will, and it appears he has, he names his children in two groups and in birth order within the groups. (Deduced from his mixing together daughters and sons names, instead of naming all his children, sons first, daughters last. Perhaps someone else can post better information about the mothers of these children.) First are the children by one wife, probably the first one: Ann, MICHAEL, Susanna, LUKE and Mary. Joseph then groups five other children, probably by ELIZABETH VEST(West): Asiah (female), Mildred, JOSEPH, WILLIAM and JESSE. It is believed Joseph had no children by Ann, who, family legend claims, ran off with another man. 1. MICHAEL WALTRIP, believed born about 1739 in Amelia Co., Va. He removed to Northampton Co. in northeastern North Carolina and died there about 1790. He had two sons, JOHN (who had only a daughter) and GRAFTON who died by 1803 in Greensville Co.,Va. 2. LUKE WALTRIP, born about 1743 in Amelia Co., Va. He moved his family to Kentucky, then to Greene Co., IL, where he died in 1820. This Luke is often confused with LUKE WALDROP of Hanover Co., Va. His sons were LUKE, JOSEPH, WILLIAM and MICHAEL. 3. JOSEPH WALTRIP, JR., born about 1758 and died about 1848 (age 90!) in Amelia County, Va where he lived his entire life. He married Polly McConnel in July 1793 in Amelia Co. (Marriage records list her as Polly M. Connel.) He left no will, but a deed showing the disposal of his land lists his heirs. His sons WILLIAM T., JOEL and ASA were born 1797, 1802 and 1804, respectively. 4. WILLIAM WALTRIP, born about 1762 in Amelia Co., Va. There are debates about what happened to this William Waltrip; Nevertheless, I did not find him as an adult in any records in Amelia Co., or in the western area of Virginia. 5. JESSE WALTRIP, born about 1764 in Amelia Co., Va; died probably between 1823 and 1830 in James City County, Va. (His name appears on an 1823 Amelia County deed as a resident of James City County.) He married Mary "Polly" Galloway in July 1809 in Amelia County. Only two sons named ROBERT and WILLIAM are known to me. In 1850, his son James Walthrop, farmer, age 35, was enumerated in the James City County census with two sons, BENJAMIN and ROBERT, in his household. Jesse was in the Amelia Co., Va tax and census records for the years 1805, 1808, 1809, 1810, and 1820. He was in the 1810 and 1820 censuses in Amelia County, living next to his brother, Joseph. In 1820, his household was composed of 1m u/10, 1m 16/18, 1m 26/45, 3f u/10, 1f10/16, 1f 26/45.
