Joyce, Go to where you enter in to the subject box, after your Internet opens up. Type in -Dawes Indians-. I came across mine by accident and just lucked up on it. I bookmark my page, but I am not sure how I got there. But if you will type in Dawes Indians and click, it will pull up a whole page. I typed in Waldrop-Mississippi and received 3500 or so listings. I searched thru about 200 of mine at 10 a click. But if you go thru the Internet and type in Dawes Indians, you will find yours a lot faster than I did mine. I didn't 't know what I was looking for....and then ran across my grandmother's name, Choctawa..and her card. I felt like I had hit pay dirt....... Sandra
Sandy, I just went to Google.com, entered ["Squire Edwards" Escatawpa] in the search line, and that is what came up. Google.com is fun, a treasure hunt. You never know what will turn up. Thanks, there is a Perry Edwards in the County. But all I have ever heard of was Squire Edwards. It's worth checking out. Thanks for your help. Sandra
Hmm, I should have read more carefully because you say the man Squire Edwards was in Escatawpa. I checked on Google.com and found what seems to be a reference to him in the Mobile Daily Register of 1893. Perhaps you have already seen it, but you can find it at this URL. Look about half way down the page under "The Sheriff and his Posse set out." http://home.earthlink.net/~bronyaf/Friends_Myers/mobile_reg.html Ruth ----- Original Message ----- From: <Scalawag1867@aol.com> To: <WALDROP-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: October 14, 2002 11:34 AM Subject: [WALDROP] Edwards, mayne Squire , Alabama > Does anyone know of an Edwards, maybe Squire Edwards? > > My great grandmother adopted daughter, was name was Princess born in > 1888 in Kentucky. Sandra, Sometimes Squire is a title, rather than a name, but I guess you already thought of that. So you may need to look for Squire ___ Edwards when you search. Where I live in south-central KY there are many Edwards families--Hart/Barren counties. Joyce, No, my grandmaw Minnie, lived in Vinegar Bend, Alabama, Washington County. Se married James Harry Waldrop She was the Daughter of Mary Elizabeth Woulard, Moss, Buckaloo, Masters. Her grandparents were Benjamin F. Woulard and Unity Williford. Grandmaw belonged to Masters. (His name could have been Milfred, Henry or J. O......Henry and J. O. are listed on Minnie and her sister's death cert. and Milfred is mentioned somewhere thru the years. I found the Dawes list by typing in " Waldrop- Mississippi" ,in the little block hit enter and there came back about 3500 listings, I started just checking out each one. When I reached around 200..plus, I saw out of the corner of my eye, my grandmaw Minnie's name. Minnie L. Waldrop, Choctaw , Mississippi, Dawes...and I closed in on it and couldn't believe my eyes. I clicked on it and it opened tons of informations on the Indians and the Dawes List. Ton and Tons of information. I have already sent in an email for my grandmaw Minnies Card number and all the information that was listed on the list to an email who offers to do free looks up. Mine was listed N/R, Not Registered or Not Recorded. Because she didn't have enough genealogical information about her. So I am crossing my fingers and saying a little prayer, they will find something. We were at a brick wall, but now have hopes again. Let me know if I can be of anymore help. I wish you good luck but mostly God speed......with your research. Please let me know.... When I hear from the Dawes List, I will let the list know. I keep spelling Dawes wrong..I forget just how they spelled it. Later. Sandra Maiden name Waldrop
Sandra, I don't know anything about Howard Waldrop, but I am looking for a gggrandmother who married Michael Waldrip and was Indian. Her name was Rebecca Brown, and she was in Tishimingo Co., Miss. Where did you find the Dawes List? I thought it was only for people whose families went to Oklahoma, or did your grandmother go. My husband's Moore and Folsom family are listed on the 1831 Mississippi Choctaw list. Were they on that one also? Does anyone know of an Edwards, maybe Squire Edwards? My great grandmother adopted daughter, was name was Princess born in 1888 in Kentucky. The 1900 Census shows her in school and living with my relatives. They were living in Vinegar Bend ,Alabama, Washingotn County. Stories go that as a young lady she married an older man named Squire Edwards, who had another wife and a daughter about the same age as Princess Waldrop. The Edwards lived in Escatawpa. My Aunt Louise Waldrop Jorgensen, knew some of the Edwards who lived in Escatawpa. Aunt Louise was born in 1905 and died in 2001. She remembered quite a few of the families in Vinegar Bend and Escatawpa. Aunt Louise talked about her Aunt Mary Ellen McIIwain who married James Monroe Baxter her great uncle, son of J. W. and Chairity Williford Baxter. Who lived in Vinegar Bend and Escatawpa. Shep Baxter who used to run the Vinegar Bend Post Office before J. D, Davidson. Shepard Lawrence Baxter was the son on Mary Ellen McIIwain and James Monroe Baxter. He donated the Escatawpa Baptist Church the large Bell that sits at the front door of the Church on the Left in Escatawpa , Alabama, Washington County. James Monroe Baxter built the first saw mill in Vinegar Bend, Alabama and in 1887 he sold it to the Turners. Racilla Gertrude Baxter married John Tyler Turner, their son was Tyler Monroe Turner. Other relatives were Deas, Coopers, Willifords, Buckaloos, Masters, Waldrop, Woulards, McQuires, Lopers, Dearmons, Pratts, Longs. I do not like to enter by assuming...it will throw the whole line off. Thanks again. Sandra Maiden name Waldrop
Hi, Thanks I will check out Googles. I found a couple of Home pages with a picture of Howard Waldrop. It looks as tho he might have Indian blood. The area he lived in did have the Cherokee and Choctaw Indians. I found the Dawes list yesterday listing all the Indians in the Mississippi area, and I found my grandmother Minnie L. Waldrop. Story goes she was part Indian and my daddy and uncle used to tease her when they were little and called her Minnie Ha Ha. She was so tiny, thick long black hair she would roll in a ball at the back of her neck and the darkest blackest eyes. My grandmother had four children , by Minnie was the half sister with the name Masters. I have just started my research with the Dawes list. I couldn't believe it when I found a Waldrop wrote "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" Howard Waldrop has written several books. He was born in Houston, Mississippi Chickasaw County. He was born in 1946 and lived in Starksville and attended school in Mississippi. He moved to Texas in 1950 and graduated from the University of Texas. In the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?", the man who was the boyfriend of Clooney's wife was named Waldrop. In one of Harold Waldrop's book one of his character was named Madison Yazoo Leake, Counties in Mississippi. I think it would be interested to find what line of Waldrops Harold Waldrop belongs to. I know I would love to enter him into my files. Does anyone out there related to or know about Howard Waldrop? Anyone up in Washington State know of Harold Waldrop? I'm in Georgia , and Georgia and Mississippi is so far away from Washington State, we could use a little help. Thanks for any help. Sandra Waldrop Doolittle scalaway1867@aol.com
