That is supposed to be Ann Raney Coleman.......sorry about the typo
Attention: Jimmy Walker Joseph Ryan Waldrop lived in Georgia, DeSota County Mississippi. Tate County, Arkansas, South Carolina, Louisana and Alabama. I need to talk Jimmy Walker. Mr. Walker and I was talking about a year ago about Joseph Ryan Waldrop living in Martagorda and also being married in in Powder Horn. Mr Walker wasn't sure where Powder Horn was. Dr. Joseph Waldrop of Martagorda was written about in a book called Victorian Lady on The Texas Frontier. This book was written by Ann Raney Cikenab of Whiteheaven Ann Raney Coleman was the mother of Victoria K. Thomas Waldrop. My gr grandpapa Joseph Ryan Waldrop was also a Physician, noted in the History of Washington County-Alabama. Also a State Rep. of Washington County, found in the Archives of Montgomery, Alabama. He was also a Minister found in newspapers in Alabama. He is mention in the Book "Public Men In Alabama{ in local Libraries. Powder Horn is where Victoris K. Thomas of Matagorda, Texas married JRW. JRW and Victoria had a son Joseph Mark Henry Waldrop born in 1858. JRW left Victoria with child and went back to Arkansas where he already had a wife named Sarah Cathrine Alexanders, no children. Then he moved Washington County , Alabama and married my gr grandmother age 25 and JRW was 41. In 1870 he was ambushed and killed in Washington County, Alabama. His Obit was in the Mobile Register. (Alabama) Sara Baxter and Joseph R. Waldrop marriage lisc. December 7, 1867. My gr grandmother. We have no idea where JRW was in 1860. There is a Physician in Tippah County, Mississipp wife Emily and children. ?? we don know. I have heard from a member of Emily's family who claims our JRW. But we have to remember our JRW was ambushed and killed in 1870. So if the JRW goes pass 1870 we know they aren't the same person. JRW was in and out of states, so he just might have been in Tenn. Tenn wasn's as far away as Texas and South Carolina. So far JRW has children in DeSota/Tate County, Mississippi, Matagorda County, Texas, one marriage in Arkansas and two sons in Washington County, Alabama. Power Horn, Texas in Calhoun County, was a depot for Indianola in the 1850s, located south of that town at the site where Powder Horn Lake connects with Matagorda Bay. It began as an addition to the already established Indianola and was known as Brown's Addition. It was at the site of the old German immigrant campsite. As Indianola grew, many businesses moved to the Powder Horn area, and citizens increasingly regarded Powder Horn as a pard to Indianola. The settlement and development of the Powder Horn area was expected to replace Port Lavaca s the major por in South Texas. It succeded for a while in becoming a transshipment point for supplies to the interior of the state, particually San Antonio. In 1853 the depot had five structures for supplies, a small blacksmith shop and a stable.
Ruth, So far I haven't ran across Woodall or Hunter. We have a well known Woodall family here in Columbus, Georgia. I went to High School with a Hunter Family who lived in Harris County, Georgia. You , if you haven't already, join the Georgia Rootswebs list and the Counties surrounding my Muscogee County. The Trail of Tears also left just across the river from us in Eufalua, Alabama. The Counties to join would be, Ga- Troup, Muscogee, Talbot, Harris, Cowetta and Merriweather. Maybe even Lee and Russell County. Alabama, if you think she might have been with the Trail of Tears movement. During the 1820s the 1840 many families, travel thru this area because of the land grants. Including my Waldrops. Some other names: Nancy Gunn, Martha Hamby, Mitchell Stribling, Newton McCuller, Amanda M. Thompson, Eliza I. Gray, William Owens, Mary I. Owens, Condace Brown, Charles Brown, Heorge Gunn, William Butler, Sara Burler, Johathan Hand, Ellen Pruden, Mark Thornton, George Burton, Nancy Burton, David Tarvin. Brother Woodberry, W. A. Rehoboth Baptist Church, was first located about one an a quarter miles below Cataula, Georgia. On March 10, 1839 , the Church was in conferences set. The Rev George Granberry was the Minister. It is thought that the Church was in existence before that date, but the other ministers are not known. It is thought that the Grandberry family gave four acres of land for the orginal site. The Church Cemetery is there, but the church as been moved to Cataula. In the first conference a letter was granted to sister Dinah a woman of colour, the property of the B.B. Buchannan. Mr. V A Hill was clerk. In November 17, 1839 , The Rev. George Granberry , Hiram McCullers, Willis Evenson were delegates to the Columbus. The following formed a presbytery viz: James Perryman, Wm. Henderson, G. B. Waldrop ( My gr gr grandpapa) Cary Willis, Anderson Smith, and Robert Fleming. Bother and Sister McKinley were dismissed by letter. A partial list of the members from the entry April 30, 1842, follows: Jesse Cox, Jane Cox, Robertson McCullers, Martha Ann McCullers, Tabitha Higgingbothoam, Emily Higgingbotham, Nancy Gunn, Martha Hamby, Mitchell Stribling, Newton McCuller, and a few more. It appears that Benjamin Waldrop (papa of the Rev. Green Berry Waldrop), Benjamin's wife Alsey and Bodi Waldrop had moved on. They were found in Alabama. Also : Heard Family Nancy Heard married Joseph Ryan Waldrop son of the Rev. Green Berry Waldrop from Georgia to Mississippi. Higgingbothams-Nancy Caroline Waldrop daughter of the Rev. Green Berry Waldrop married Seaborn Higgingbothom. Eavenson--The Rev. Green Berry buried in Eavenson's Cemetery. Higgingbothom and Eavenson along with the Heard were together with the Rev. Green Berry Waldrop in and around the 1820s until 1840. Henry Low Waldrop, the Rev. Green Berry Waldrop's son was born in Harris County. It appears many of these people were friends and traveled together and settled in the same places. Most of the Information I am sharing came from Talbot, Harris, Muscogee, Cowetta and other Counties in Georgia Libaries Court Houses and the friendly people in these Counties.. It appears these families were drawn here by the the land grants. Wadrops have also been found in Clayton, County, Georgia, Jonesboro, Georgia. Mr. Joseph H. Moore of Jonesboro, Georgia has Waldrop ancestors. Mr. Moore has great knowledge of the Civil War and the Battle of Jonesboros Georgia. Sandra maiden name Waldrop Georgia
I want to ask a favor. I see in this list of church members names that are familiar to me--last names, that is. I research Henderson, Anderson, Waldrop, and Willis. But the reason I am writing now is that I am desperate to find my ancestor named Eliza Ann Woodall, born ca. 1816 who married James A. Hunter, born ca. 1813 in Barren County, KY. I don't know where she was born, and that is why I am writing. They eventually settled in Hart County, Kentucky. I know there are Woodall families in Georgia, and I have considered Georgia a good possibility for Eliza Ann's birthplace. But I have not found her there. Since there are the Willis and Anderson families in this church you spoke of here, and I know Eliza Ann was related to Andersons and probably Willis-es. I wanted to ask if any on this list also might know of a Woodall family in your Georgia research--or Alabama--or Tennessee--or Kentucky. I have tried to find Eliza Ann's family for years, but to no avail. She may have been Native American and on the Trail of Tears. Located on Pleasant Hill Road between Duluth and Lawrenceville, near the corner of Cruse Road, the Church today is used as Sweetwater Memorial Chapel. The Cemetery is relatively well maintained, and several graves are decorated with small confederate Flags. I have a picture of the probably 1909 Sweetwater Primitive Church. also a Cemetery with the home of Eli Landers in the background. I didn't see the Higgingbothams or Eavenson families with the Waldrop in Gwinnette County, Georgia or at least not mention. Sandra

Summary of the families of Joseph & John Waldrop of Amelia Co., Va and Luke Waldrop of Hanover Co., Va. PART 2: JOHN AND ANN WALDROP OF AMELIA CO., VIRGINIA John Waldrop, was born about 1730, place unknown. While most of his descendants used the Waldrop spelling, some were known as Waltrip. John is assumed to be the brother of James Waldrop, born 1720, who shared land with John in Amelia and Pittsylvania Counties in Virginia. (Joseph Waltrip, born about 1715, lived on the same creek in Amelia County as John and James and is believed to be another brother. No proof.) John married Anne and had the following sons: JOHN JR. (b. c1753), ISAIAH (b. c1755), EZEKIEL (b. c1757), ELI (aka ILA) (b. c1759), JAMES (b. c1761), BENJAMIN (b. c1762/3) and JOSEPH (b. c1764). (These are estimated birthdates based on censuses and land records. They are not exact, and neither is the birth order.) Note that this Ezekiel is the brother of Benjamin, not his father, as claimed by some. John Waldrop and James were first taxed in 1754 in Amelia Co., Va. In 1763, John sold the land he owned with assumed brother James Waldrop, and in 1764 they moved their families to Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, where the two of them bought more land together. While there, John and some of his sons signed the Pittsylvania Declaration of Independence and Oath of Allegiance. By 1778, the family was in Sullivan Co., NC (now TN), where John's sons John Jr., Isaiah, and possibly James and Joseph entered the service. (I do not have documentation for James and Joseph, although supposedly there are NC stub indents showing payments to these two.–jd) There are numerous deed transactions for John and his sons in this county. Around 1798-1799, John lived for a brief time in Spartanburg Co., SC, where he and sons James, Benjamin and Ezekiel owned adjoining land. In 1794, John bought land in Rutherford Co., NC and lived there until he died sometime after 1810. 1. JOHN WALDROP (JR). Born about 1753. (John's pension application claims he was age 79 in 1832. In 1810, he was over age 45 according to the census.) After the Rev. War, John removed to Greenville Co., SC, where he lived until he died. His only son was JOHN WALDROP (II) who removed to Georgia. 2. ELI (aka ILA) WALDROP. Est. birth 1755. (Born between 1750-1760, according to censuses.) After the Rev. War, Eli settled in Greenville Co., SC near his brother, John. He died there in 1845. Sons were JAMES N. and HARMON. 3. ISAIAH WALDROP. Est. birth 1757. (Born between 1750 and 1760, according to the census. Some say he was born in 1767, but censuses and his Rev. War muster of 2 Aug 1777 do not support that theory.) By 1790, Isaiah had removed to Rutherford Co., NC and bought land near his father. Soon after, he moved his family to Wilcox Co., AL, where he lived until he died in 1867 (age 100+! ). Sons RICHARD, JOHN and LARKIN. 4. EZEKIEL WALDROP. Est. birth 1759/1760. (Born between 1760-1770, according to censuses.) In 1810 and 1820, Ezekiel was living in Rutherford Co., NC with his family, which included 2 sons under ten. By 1830, he had moved to Haywood Co., TN, where he died after 1840. In 1830, two sons (names unknown to me), then ages 20-30, according to the census, were still living in their father's home. (In that census, there was also a JOEL WALDROP who lived near Ezekiel in Haywood Co.) This Ezekiel is sometimes confused with the son of John and Tabitha of Newberry Co., SC. 5. JAMES WALDROP. Est. birth 1761 or before. (Born between 1765 and 1784, according to 1810 census; Born by 1761 if age 21 when he bought land in 1782. Since land records are considered to be more accurate than censuses, the 1761 birthdate is probably correct.) Died about 1820 in Russell Co., Va. He is said to have served in the Rev. War. (No proof.) Sons JAMES, WILLIAM, JOHN, NELSON and possibly others. 6. BENJAMIN WALDROP. Born 1762/3. (Born between 1760-1770, according to censuses.) Still living at home in 1790. By 1798, Benjamin had married Ailsey Huggard and removed to Spartanburg Co., SC. In 1806, he sold his Spartanburg Co. land, and bought land near his father in Rutherford Co., NC In April 1807, he and his family removed to Cocke Co., TN, where he entered the Georgia Land Lottery and won. In September, 1807, the family left Cocke Co., TN and settled in Putnam Co., Ga. He died probably in Tallapoosa Co., AL between 1840 and 1850. Sons: GREENBERRY, GEORGE M., EZEKIEL RUFUS, WILLIAM G., MAJOR, DANIEL, HENRY, ARCHIBALD and BENJAMIN. 7. JOSEPH WALDROP. Est. birth 1764. (Born before 1775, according to1820 census.) In 1796, Joseph lived briefly in Russell County, Va, where his name appears on the Personal Property Tax list (Lower District, Robert Tate's list). He was not taxed for any land. Joseph removed to Martin Co., Indiana where he is found in the 1820 census. His household held only him, his wife, both age 45+, and a female 10/15 He is said to have served in the Rev. War. (No proof, but boys as young as 12 did serve in the war.)
Summary of the families of Joseph & John Waldrop of Amelia Co., Va and Luke Waldrop of Hanover Co., Va. PART I: JOSEPH WALTRIP OFAMELIA CO., VA Joseph's name has been spelled numerous ways, including Worldrop, but most of his descendants' names eventully became WALTRIP. Family legend says Joseph was born (est.) 1715 in Wales, but there is no evidence. It is rather certain that he was an indentured servant. In 1737-1738, he was living in Amelia County, Va in the household of Thomas Hodge who paid taxes for him. From 1738-1747, Amelia County taxes for a group of men (including Joseph) were paid by William Greene. It was not until 1748 that Joseph paid his own tax. Inasmuch as Hodge and Greene paid taxes for these men during this time, it indicates these men were indentured servants whose "master" was paying the tithes for them. It is believed Joseph married at least twice, and perhaps three times. There is no information about his first wife; His second wife was ELIZABETH VEST (West); and his third wife was ANN. Joseph's will offers clues about the mothers of his children. Assuming he has used the old style in the way he words his will, and it appears he has, he names his children in two groups and in birth order within the groups. (Deduced from his mixing together daughters and sons names, instead of naming all his children, sons first, daughters last. Perhaps someone else can post better information about the mothers of these children.) First are the children by one wife, probably the first one: Ann, MICHAEL, Susanna, LUKE and Mary. Joseph then groups five other children, probably by ELIZABETH VEST(West): Asiah (female), Mildred, JOSEPH, WILLIAM and JESSE. It is believed Joseph had no children by Ann, who, family legend claims, ran off with another man. 1. MICHAEL WALTRIP, believed born about 1739 in Amelia Co., Va. He removed to Northampton Co. in northeastern North Carolina and died there about 1790. He had two sons, JOHN (who had only a daughter) and GRAFTON who died by 1803 in Greensville Co.,Va. 2. LUKE WALTRIP, born about 1743 in Amelia Co., Va. He moved his family to Kentucky, then to Greene Co., IL, where he died in 1820. This Luke is often confused with LUKE WALDROP of Hanover Co., Va. His sons were LUKE, JOSEPH, WILLIAM and MICHAEL. 3. JOSEPH WALTRIP, JR., born about 1758 and died about 1848 (age 90!) in Amelia County, Va where he lived his entire life. He married Polly McConnel in July 1793 in Amelia Co. (Marriage records list her as Polly M. Connel.) He left no will, but a deed showing the disposal of his land lists his heirs. His sons WILLIAM T., JOEL and ASA were born 1797, 1802 and 1804, respectively. 4. WILLIAM WALTRIP, born about 1762 in Amelia Co., Va. There are debates about what happened to this William Waltrip; Nevertheless, I did not find him as an adult in any records in Amelia Co., or in the western area of Virginia. 5. JESSE WALTRIP, born about 1764 in Amelia Co., Va; died probably between 1823 and 1830 in James City County, Va. (His name appears on an 1823 Amelia County deed as a resident of James City County.) He married Mary "Polly" Galloway in July 1809 in Amelia County. Only two sons named ROBERT and WILLIAM are known to me. In 1850, his son James Walthrop, farmer, age 35, was enumerated in the James City County census with two sons, BENJAMIN and ROBERT, in his household. Jesse was in the Amelia Co., Va tax and census records for the years 1805, 1808, 1809, 1810, and 1820. He was in the 1810 and 1820 censuses in Amelia County, living next to his brother, Joseph. In 1820, his household was composed of 1m u/10, 1m 16/18, 1m 26/45, 3f u/10, 1f10/16, 1f 26/45.
All, The postings about Benjamin Waldrop are filled with errors which appear to have come from faulty websites and databases. The individuals in the families of John and Joseph Waldrop of Amelia Co., Va and Luke Waldrop of Hanover Co., Va. often have been confused, probably because of the similarity of names. Unfortunately, some people copy undocumented data from others and from web sites, then share errors with fellow researchers. This is apparent in the erroneous data being posted for Benjamin on this board. (I would encourage any serious researcher to require documentaton or evidence before adding any copied information to his database.) Since I researched Joseph and John of Amelia County and some of their children last year, and also have data on my ancestor Luke Waldrop of Hanover County, I am posting a summary of these three families in hopes it will help eliminate some of the confusion. I am concentrating on male names, since they are the ones often misidentified. Feel free to add or correct data. Because the summary is so long, I'll have to post it in three separate pieces: JOSEPH OF AMELIA CO., VA (FAMILY OF) JOHN OF AMELIA CO., VA (FAMILY OF) LUKE OF HANOVER CO., VA (FAMILY OF) Jan
Dear Jan, This is NOT Jean but Paul (pcpalmer@gvtc.com). Jean (Mrs. Marvin Palmer) is my 3rd cousin by marriage. I had a brief correspondence with you in the past. Jean probably introduced us when you were both involved in sorting out the John Waldrop will to establish the fact that Ann and Elizabeth were NOT one person, but sisters. I lost some of my Waldrop/Parrish files when my hard drive was erased by a hacker in October 2001. When Sandra wrote for a copy of the John Waldrop will transcription, she thought she was his descendant, but, if so, the line of descent she gave clearly left out a generation. My response to her was obviously speculative. Given what information I had, it looked like a fairly good guess. Like a lot of genealogical speculations, it turned out to be incorrect. Thank goodness, it was nipped in the bud. Did you ever give me your line of descent from Luke Waldrop? Mine is: Luke, John, Ann (m. Jesse PALMER), Daniel Palmer, Jesse Palmer, Charles A. Palmer, Dewey C. Palmer, Paul C. Palmer (me, born 1935). Sandra, You have mixed up your John Waldrops. You do not descend from John, son of Luke, but rather from John of Amelia Co., Va.They are different persons. I will post ome data that should help. This is a misleading assumption. There is no evidence that Benjamin was ever in any of these counties but Coweta. Since he was last seen living inTallapoosa Co., Al at age 78, I doubt he did much more moving around. I would look for his death record and burial there if I were searching.
