Does anyone have written or oral information about their ancestors who traveled with other families while moving towards Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi then on to Texas. Were there any family stories of Wagon Trains and families they traveled with. Waldrops left North Carolina/South Carolina came thru Georgia, crossed over to Alabama and in to Mississippi and settled in DeSoto, Mississippi. They were in Gwennette and Harris Counties Georgia 1820-1840s. Some of the Families were Waldrop, Thornton , Heards and Eavenson. It appears they traveled together and also married one another. Other family members I am researching that might have traveled in the same Wagon Trains. Waldrop, Williford, Woulard, Baxter, Deas, Dearman, Loper, McKenzie, McBride, Aldridge, Livermans, White, Higgingbotham, Heard, Thornton, Eavenson, Buckalew, Masters, Richardsons, Colsons, Grimes, McIIwains., Longs, Coopers, Platts, Chasons, Thomas, Alexanders. These families were in the same area about the same time and I am researching to see if they came to the same areas .These families married among themselves. Anyone have any information how their family traveled and arrived to where they settled down and who they might have traveled with. Thanks for any help. Sandra
Robert Waldrop, That is wonderful that you have part of the wagon and knowing how your ancestors traveled. Thank you for sharing that with me. There were several families together in Harris County, Georgia that were together in DeSoto County, Mississippi they left Georgia about 1840. I wonder if they just traveled together or if they were in a Wagon Train. When I say Wagon Trains, I think of "Raw Hide" on Television. John McIntire and Robert Horton, and Clint Eastwood. I hope these are right, It's been many, many years since I've seen the show. There was a story each week about someone on the Wagon Train. Was Wishbone the cook? There was so many cowboy shows that I get them confused. Sandra
Well, my great grandfather, Luther Elbert Waldrop, son of William Henry Waldrop (and Elmira Gosset Waldrop), brought his family from Sherman, Texas to Oklahoma Territory in a wagon, but I don't know if they came in a 'wagon train'. My father still has the wagon bows from that wagon. How would you know if your ancestors traveled with Wagon Trains? My ancestors came from North and South Carolina , in the early 1800s,traveling thru Georgia, crossing over to Alabama, one ancestor having a passport leaving Georgia into Alabama. They settled in Mississippi and some went on to Texas. In all my researching I have never heard mention of a Wagon Train. I really don't know how they traveled. I do know that some of the families that was with them in Georgia settled with them in Mississippi. My gr gr grandpapa J. W. Baxter and my gr gr grandmother Charity Elizabeth Williford were born 1808 in Georgia while traveling and settling in lower Alabama. My Woulards were from North Carolina and were one of the few white settlers that settled in Wayne County, Mississippi. (Eret and State Line) Benjamin F. Woulard born in 1804 and was on his way to Mississippi by1810. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your help. Sandra maiden name Waldrop Georgia

This was in this morning's paper. It is a biger aarticil. Joan Elizabeth Adams Waldrip: Her maternal instinct reached beyond sons to her SMU family 06/20/2003 By JOE SIMNACHER / The Dallas Morning News Joan Elizabeth Adams Waldrip shared her caring touch of a mother with thousands in Dallas. At home, there were her four sons. At work, there were nearly three decades of freshmen in the dormitories beginning college life at Southern Methodist University. And then there were her 20 years as a reservist with the Dallas County Sheriff's Department, where she became a deputy commander. Mrs. Waldrip, 72, died Tuesday of cancer at a Dallas private-care home. Services will be at noon Saturday at Restland Funeral Home's Memorial Chapel, 9220 Restland Road in Dallas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. She will be buried in Restland Memorial Park. "She's got four sons, but she probably has 10,000 sons and daughters that are her SMU family," said her son, Gary Allen of San Diego, Calif. For more than 27 years, Mrs. Waldrip managed the freshman and sports dormitories at SMU. "It allowed her to be with people," her son said. "She had an angelic touch, because everybody that she came in contact with, they remembered her. She was friendly and very selfless. She thought about other people before she thought about herself." Born in Duluth, Minn., Mrs. Waldrip earned an associate's degree at the University of Minnesota and began to work as a dental hygienist in Dallas. She worked as a dental hygienist for six months, before she married a physician. The couple moved to California where her husband, Dr. Rhfus Allen, completed a medical residency. The couple returned to Dallas, where Mrs. Waldrip began to work at SMU. They divorced in 1968. In the early 1970s, she married Ben Waldrip, who was friends with members of the Dallas County sheriff's reserves. Mrs. Waldrip worked with the reserve division from April 1976 to April 1996. Mr. Waldrip died in 2000. "They liked it and grew with the reserve family," Mr. Allen said. The sheriff's reserve will provide an honor guard for Mrs. Waldrip during her visitation hours Friday at the funeral home and will make a presentation at her funeral Saturday, her son said. "Those people respected her and loved her like a mother," her son said. "They were like a second family." In addition to her son, Mrs. Waldrip is survived by three other sons, Greg Allen, Larry Waldrip and Jack Waldrip, all of Dallas; her brother, Dick Adams of Spokane, Wash., and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Heartland Home Health and Hospice, 8700 Stemmons Freeway, Suite 144, Dallas, Texas 75247. This was in the Dallas Morning News this morning. Joan Elizabeth Waldrip WALDRIP, JOAN ELIZABETH. On June 17th 2003, Joan Elizabeth Waldrip slipped peacefully from this life and into the next. She was an extraordinary and beautiful woman whose capacity for love was matched only by the enormous shoulders on which she could, and would, carry us all. She was wise, nurturing, compassionate and a master of the gentle, yet firm, kick to the behind. Not too hard, not too soft. Just enough to show you the straight and narrow. Her gentle persuasion and loving touch influenced thousands of lives in her 27 years as a Dormitory manager at SMU. As if that didn't keep her busy enough, for 20 years, she was also a Deputy Commander in the Dallas County Sheriffs Reserves. And in her free time, she managed to raise 4 sons. Her strength was the stuff of legend. So too, was her honesty, sense of humor, and ultimately, her inability to surrender to anything that threatened to cast a shadow upon her spirit. Even in death, she will continue to rustle the papers of our lives. Because a force like hers can never truly be gone. In Heaven, she will join her parents Stanley & Minnie Adams and her husband, Ben Waldrip. She is survived by her brother Dick Adams of Spokane WA; sons, Gary Allen, Greg Allen, Larry Waldrip and Jack Waldrip; her grandchildren, Elizabeth & Emily Allen and Christian & Haven Waldrip; nieces, Cynthia Price & Lynn Sislo; nephew Chuck Adams; the thousands of kids she shepherded through SMU, and her brothers and sisters in the Sheriffs department. There is a desk waiting for her in the Great Beyond, for there is much work for her there. And when our time comes, she will be the first to greet us. She will put her arms around us, pull us to her, and we will know that we are safe, that we are loved, that we are home. Then, as always, she will point us in the right direction. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heartland Hospice of Dallas. And finally, the family requests that you open your hearts, say a prayer, and tell those closest to you how much you love them. Services will be 12:00 P.M. Saturday June 21, 2003 at Restland Memorial Chapel. Interment to follow at Restland Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
