Hi H. L. Thank you so very much for sharing your Site with usl I really enjoyed the information and the pictures. It looks as tho we aren't from the same line. Mine is John, Benjamin, Green Berry 1794-1854 and Joseph Ryan Waldrop 1826-1870. I have a Site I will send you as soon as I add a few more pictures and one more link. I have spent all morning correcting errors. But, better now than later. My Site is more for the John Waldrop line, but it has many names and information that might be help to all our Waldrops. I sent my Site for editing to Jan Dawson, she found several, if not many errrors, so I went back and took off the Michael and Luke and started with John Waldrop. I know I am low man on the totem pole, and I get confused at times, but it is so hard sitting here and seeing so many different ways on one Waldrop line and they all look good and convincing. But the proof is in the pudding and that is my own researching and compare with others. I had found information from a Paula that looked like it linked up, but it didn't. Everyone agrees back to John Waldrop so I am going to stop there until I can enter the truth. I will keep on researching John Waldrop. H. L. would it be possible for me to use the Waldrop/Wardrobe page? I had that information or simular to it at one time and misplaced it. I really enjoyed reading the story of the Waldrop name. I would love to use it on my Site to inform my family about the Waldrop's name. But, if for some reason the page can't be used, I will understand. H. L. keep on updating, you are doing a great job. I love to see these Web Sites about the Waldrop, I wish there were more to share. Seeing the Waldrop ancestor's pictures even tho they are not my line, I know we are still a Clan. When it rains, we Waldrops and Waldrop spelled other ways than "drop", stand under the same umbrella. Sandra maiden name Waldrop Georgia
You might look at the following men that are shown on the 1777 List of Oaths of Allegiance in Pittsylvania Co VA: William Witcher's List Jno Hudson - Jno P. Hudson - Isaiah Waldrup - Jno Waldrup Sr & Jr. Also, there was a Joshua and Paul Hudson in Crispin Shelton's list. Regards, Bettye Heinrich
Thanks Donna, When my sister was traveling and going in and out of Ireland and Scottland on business. She ran into the name Waldrop many times. She checked the telephone book and there were many Waldrop. You remember when people used to send out the Coart of Arms? I remember getting one and Waldrop was listed as a Scottish. This is why I am checking with the Waldrops to see what they have heard. My maternal great great mother was a McBryde and she married a McKenzie. One would assume her parents and his came from Scottland or Ireland. But so far we have gone back several generation and we just now getting back to North and South Carolina. Thanks for your help. Sandra
My Grandfather always told me we were of Scottish descent, but I also have names like Keith,Russell,Davidson, and others of Scottish origin,so he may have meant those and not specifically Waldrop. I read once that many of the Scottish that came to America settled in the Va,NC,SC mountain areas because it reminded them of the Highlands in Scotland. Does anyone have any idea where the first Waldrops came from? In all my ten years of researching, I don't have a clue where mine stepped off the boat form. My line is John, Sr. , Benjamin, Grenn Berry and Joseph Ryan Waldrop. Anyone else have any clues. Thanks, Sandra maiden name Waldrop Georgia
I whole-heartedly second the kudos to Jan. She is a walking encyclopaedia of Waldrop knowledge. However, I must also extend thanks to Bettye. As my Dad would have said, "she ain't no slouch herself." Many, many thanks to both of you. Mickey Mildred "Mickey" Fournier PO Box 1967, Lake City, FL 32056 mailto:mfournier@atlantic.net
Thank you Bettye. (The check's in the mail to pay for your comment.) : )

This John Waldrop (Jr) who served in the Rev. War was the son of John Waldrop (Sr) of Amelia County, Virginia. John Sr and his brother James, also of Amelia, took their families to Pittsylvania Co., Va (where James died). John then took his family to Washington/Sullivan Co., NC (now )Tenn. John Sr. and some of his sons moved frequently thereafter--to Greenville Co., where sons John Jr (the Rev War John mentioned in this posting) and Eli (aka Ila, Ely) finally settled; and Spartanburg Cos., SC, where James, Benjamin and Ezekiel owned adjoining land; All left there, and John Sr finally settled in Rutherford Co., NC where he died. John Waldrop Sr's sons are described below, as best I could obtain information from my research. I am not sure of their birthdates, since I had to estimate the dates in some cases. Although the original spelling of this family's surname was Waltrip, as they moved around, the spelling varied from Waldrop(e), Waldroup, Walthrop, Waldrip (in southern states), etc. SONS OF JOHN WALDROP, SR. JOHN WALDROP, JR. Born 1753. (John's pension application claims he was age 79 in 1832. In 1810, he was over age 45 according to the census.) After the Rev. War, John removed to Greenville Co., SC, where he lived until he died. His will says he had only one son, John Waldrop, Jr., who removed to Georgia, and one daughter; However, his administration records prove he had three children. ELI (aka ILA, ELY) WALDROP. Est. birth 1755. (Born between 1750-1760, according to censuses.) After the Rev. War, Eli settled in Greenville Co., SC near his brother, John Jr. He died there in 1845. He had two sons and four daughters. ISAIAH WALDROP. Est. birth 1757. (Born between 1750 and 1760, according to the census. Some say he was born in 1767, but censuses and his Rev. War muster of 2 Aug 1777 do not support that theory.) By 1790, Isaiah had removed to Rutherford Co., NC and bought land near his father. Soon after, he moved his family to Wilcox Co., AL, where he lived until he died in 1867 (sic). He had three sons and one daughter. EZEKIEL WALDROP. Est. birth 1759/1760. (Born between 1760-1770, according to censuses.) In 1810 and 1820, Ezekiel was living in Rutherford Co., NC with his family, which included 2 sons under ten. By 1830, he had moved to Haywood Co., TN, where he died after 1840. In 1830, his two sons, then ages 20-30, according to the census, were still living in their father's home. In all, he had seven sons and possibly some daughters. JAMES WALDROP. Est. birth 1761. (Born between 1765 and 1784, according to 1810 census; Born by 1761 if age 21 when he bought land in 1782. Since land records are considered to be more accurate than censuses, the 1761 birthdate is probably correct.) Died about 1820 in Russell Co., Va. He is said to have served in the Rev. War. (No proof.) He had twelve children; The names of five of them unknown. BENJAMIN WALDROP. Born 1762/3. (Born between 1760-1770, according to censuses.) Still living at home in 1790. By 1798, Benjamin had married Ailsey Huggard and removed to Spartanburg Co., SC. In 1806, he sold his Spartanburg Co. land, and bought land near his father in Rutherford Co., NC In April 1807, he and his family removed to Cocke Co., TN, where he entered the Georgia Land Lottery and won. In September, 1807, the family left Cocke Co.,TN and settled in Putnam Co., Ga. He died in Tallapoosa Co., AL. He had eight children by Ailsey Huggard and two sons by Rachel Griffin. JOSEPH WALDROP. Est. birth 1764. (Born before 1775, according to1820 census.) In 1796, Joseph lived briefly in Russell County, Va, where his name appears on the Personal Property Tax list (Lower District, Robert Tate's list). He was not taxed for any land. Joseph removed to Martin Co., Indiana where he is found in the 1820 census. His household held only him, his wife, both age 45+, and a female 10/15 He is said to have served in the Rev. War. (No proof, but boys as young as 12 did serve in the war.)
I hope all of the subcribers to this list realize and APPRECIATE the expertise of Jan Dawson's research. I KNEW she would have the info on John Waldrop to respond to this morning's query. To Jan I say " I will never be able to tell you how grateful I am for all the research you have shared with us. I shall ever be indebted to you." Regards, Bettye Heinrich

Hi, I am sure that Jan Dawson will respond on this John Waldrop. Last month I found the record of John and James Waldrop receiving land grants in Sullivan Co TN. I queried Jan on them to be sure they were not our Newberry Co SC John and James Waldrop'. She replied and told me which Waldrop line they were part of. Naturally, I don't have the note where I can post the info that she sent to me. Bettye Heinrich

Paula, Yes and Thank you for replying. My great grandpapa Joseph R. Waldrop was physician, minister, State Rep. of Washington County, Alabama, Born in 1826, died in 1870m ambushed and killed in 1870 Escatawpa, Alabama, Washington Count. He married Sarah Baxter and left two sons, James Harry Waldrop 1869-1924 and a son he never saw who was born after he was killed, Joseph R. Waldrop, Jr. born 1871 and died 1899. He might have had a relative his age, named Stephen. My aunt used to say someone named Stephen who was his age came to Escatawpa,Alabama on the Alabama - Mississippi State Line. She said they rode horses and were the best of friends. She said they both were so tall and big they when they rode their horses the ground trembled. Joseph Ryan Waldrop Born 1826 had a son , Stephen FranklinWaldrop. I received email from a couple of people a few years ago saying James D. Waldrop was JRW's relative. I checked this out and found nothing. I was just wondering if anyone in your line might have heard of JRW. Other oral storied was he was 6' 6" and ministers and twins ran in his family. He was a ret. merch. Justice of the Peace, and in the KKK. He beat up the Judge of Probate in 1868 while still wearing his white sheet and the Judge nailed him because of his height and deep voice. Stories goes you either loved him or hated him. No one would go up against him. This is why he was ambushed. Yet his reputaion of being a kind, genlte physician and a loved minister was around for his grandchildren to hear about him. He was fair but he was firm. Was wondering if JRW might have been in the James D. Waldrop line as a relative. Thru years of researeching my JRW has been connected and accepted being the Son of Rev. Green Berry Waldrop and Elizabeth, they lived in DeSoto , Mississippi. I am trying to fill in the Blanks. He lived in South Carolina, Louisana, Alabama, Mississippi Georgia and Texas. His obit was in the Mobile Register August 16, 1870. He was ambushed August 13, 1870. Thanks for any help. Sandra maiden name Waldrop Georgia
