    3. Sandra, I read where you posted about Bodie Waldrop....don't remember if it was recently or if I read it in the archives. Thought you might be interested in this web site. http://patsabin.com/gwinnett/sweetwater.htm It's the church in Gwinnett County,GA where he was one of the founding members. This church is not far from me,maybe I can convince my daughter that this needs to be next on our list of cemetery trips. Although, knowing where it is, its hard to believe it's in such a peaceful country setting. Donna Waldrop Gandy --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! 1. Re: [WALDROP] The Waldrops in America 1699-1966 by James M. Waldrop
    2. Donna, Jim Waldrop is in his late 80s now. He retired to South Carolina, but before that he was a radio announcer in the Northeast. He was a dedicated Waldrop researcher, whose work for the most part is accurate; However, since personal computers became so popular, facts have been uncovered that prove some of his theories on family relationships are in error. Most of us old-time researchers know Jim and have corresponded with him. He has helped many beginning Waldrop genealogists and corresponded with many other Waldrop descendants. Jim no longer researches, but he was and is a gifted writer. The "book" you have was the beginning of a larger book Jim intended to write, but never completed and therefore never published. A year ago when I spoke to him, he said he had quit working on it years ago when it reached over 1200 pages. I begged him to publish what he had, but he had lost interest. He said his daughter might publish it after he was gone, but that the expense might be too much for a book that might not be reliably accurate. Many of us have a copy of that early book, which was mimeographed back when that was the principal way of producing many copies inexpensively. Your copy is a keepsake and you are lucky to have it. If you have any letters from Jim, you will notice a distinctive trait that he always said proved his Scottish blood. He literally never wasted an inch of the paper he wrote on. Usually it was typing paper size, and when he got to the bottom of the paper, he wrote in all the margins until there was no more room to write anything else. He laughed about it, and so did we. He is a wonderful man, and those of us who know him miss his research prowess. I know much of the information it contains about my Grandfather's line does agree with information from family bibles and information my grandfather wrote prior to the 70s (there was a distinct difference in his handwriting as he got older).

    3. Jan, What I have is 48 pages. It appears to be hand-typed (errors marked out and corrected in ink), and hand bound. I remember reading it as a child when I visited my Grandfather in Asheville,NC. Later, when I was married and had children of my own, I remember sitting on the back porch with him one summer night, going through the book and me adding information on the back page. I suppose my grandfather had that same "Scottish trait"...he wrote any and everywhere. I have dates scribbled on Masonic and Eastern Star programs,Order forms for Ford Model A parts, anything that was handy at the time. If for no other reason than the memories it brings, this book is definitely a keepsake. Donna Waldrop Gandy JanDawson@aol.com wrote: Donna, Jim Waldrop is in his late 80s now. 2. Donna Waldrop Gandy
    3. I've seen reference to this while searching the archives of this list. I'm curious to know if this was a published work? I have a hand-typed book handed down to me through my grandfather Claud Waldrop. On the 1st page it says The Waldrops in America 1699-1966 by James M.Waldrop After that it has a handwritten address in Newark,Delaware and the date 1971 (this is not in my grandfather's handwriting) >From other notes and documents, I know this is someone my grandfather corresponded with. I know much of the information it contains about my Grandfather's line does agree with information from family bibles and information my grandfather wrote prior to the 70s (there was a distinct difference in his handwriting as he got older). Also, thought this information might be useful to someone: Doing research on another line, I checked out an old set of books titled Kinfolks by William Curry Harllee it is a 4 volume set published between 1934-1937. They are out of print now, but I was able to get them from the University of Georgia Athens through an interlibrary loan. If anyone's search is centered in the low country of SC, they may be useful. The general index book contains 302 pages of surnames. Found this about Waldrop in them: Records of North Carolina Wills The following is from Grimes's Abstract of NC wills, 1663-1760. Devisors ore shown in capital letters. Devisees follow. Where two dates appear the first is date of will the second is date of probate, etc. (p.364) StUART,JOHN. New Hanover Precinet. June 27,1736. July 9,1736. Legatees: Sarah Smith, Henrietta Stuart (sister, of Inverness in North Britain). Executors: Thomas WARDROPER (Surveyor General of the province) and James Murray of Brunswick. The only other Waldrop reference is on page 1026 volume 2 George W. Fulmer married Amy Waldrop of Ga. They moved to Arkansas,New Edinburgh. children Frank, Lank, Henry,Ellen,Martha. The book doesn't give birth dates, but does mention that George served in the rev. war. Donna Waldrop Gandy --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! War was the son of John Waldrop (Sr) of Amelia County, Virginia. John Sr and his brother James, also of Amelia, took their families to Pittsylvania Co., Va (where James died). John then took his family to Washington/Sullivan Co., NC (now )Tenn. John Sr. and some of his sons moved frequently thereafter--to Greenville Co., where sons John Jr (the Rev War John mentioned in this posting) and Eli (aka Ila, Ely) finally settled; and Spartanburg Cos., SC, where James, Benjamin and Ezekiel owned adjoining land; All left there, and John Sr finally settled in Rutherford Co., NC where he died. John Waldrop Sr's sons are described below, as best I could obtain information from my research. I am not sure of their birthdates, since I had to estimate the dates in some cases. Although the original spelling of this family's surname was Waltrip, as they moved around, the spelling varied from Waldrop(e), Waldroup, Walthrop, Waldrip (in southern states), etc. SONS OF JOHN WALDROP, SR. JOHN WALDROP, JR. Born 1753. (John's pension application claims he was age 79 in 1832. In 1810, he was over age 45 according to the census.) After the Rev. War, John removed to Greenville Co., SC, where he lived until he died. His will says he had only one son, John Waldrop, Jr., who removed to Georgia, and one daughter; However, his administration records prove he had three children. ELI (aka ILA, ELY) WALDROP. Est. birth 1755. (Born between 1750-1760, according to censuses.) After the Rev. War, Eli settled in Greenville Co., SC near his brother, John Jr. He died there in 1845. He had two sons and four daughters. ISAIAH WALDROP. Est. birth 1757. (Born between 1750 and 1760, according to the census. Some say he was born in 1767, but censuses and his Rev. War muster of 2 Aug 1777 do not support that theory.) By 1790, Isaiah had removed to Rutherford Co., NC and bought land near his father. Soon after, he moved his family to Wilcox Co., AL, where he lived until he died in 1867 (sic). He had three sons and one daughter. EZEKIEL WALDROP. Est. birth 1759/1760. (Born between 1760-1770, according to censuses.) In 1810 and 1820, Ezekiel was living in Rutherford Co., NC with his family, which included 2 sons under ten. By 1830, he had moved to Haywood Co., TN, where he died after 1840. In 1830, his two sons, then ages 20-30, according to the census, were still living in their father's home. In all, he had seven sons and possibly some daughters. JAMES WALDROP. Est. birth 1761. (Born between 1765 and 1784, according to 1810 census; Born by 1761 if age 21 when he bought land in 1782. Since land records are considered to be more accurate than censuses, the 1761 birthdate is probably correct.) Died about 1820 in Russell Co., Va. He is said to have served in the Rev. War.
