    1. Stampede Pass Tunnel

    3. I am interested in ANY information that anyone has concerning the events surrounding the construction of the Stampede Pass Tunnel in the 1880's. My great-grandfather John A. HASKELL died on 6 October 1886, presumably in an accident related to the tunnel's construction. He was not a Kittitas County native; he was from Goldendale, Klickitat County, where he had left his wife and children. His estate was probated in Klickitat County, but the records clearly state he died in Kittitas County. Our family has always known that he died during the construction of the tunnel, in an explosion or cave-in or some such disaster. If anyone has anything -- yellowed newspaper clippings rotting away in some old album, old letters describing any such incidents, knowledge of a gravesite, etc., please check to see if my ancestor's name is mentioned therein. In 24 years of research I have not found anything but the aforementioned probate record, and I have corresponded extensively with Northern Pacific Railroad archivists, various historical societies, etc. to no avail. Thank you!!! Nancy S. Shire Oro Valley, AZ P.S. Does anyone know who is buried in the small fenced-off cemetery located in the middle of Stuart Anderson's cow pasture, visible from the highway as you head up toward Cle Elum? This has always bugged me, and I've never found anyone who can give me an answer. Just curious.
