    1. ASHLEY - Ashley Hotel and Ashley surname
    2. I received an email from a researcher, and I was hoping someone on this list might be able to help her. Do not click "reply" because the email will either go to this list or to me. She is not a subscriber. Send an email to her at the address at the end. She emailed me a photo of her grandmother's brother's hotel called Ashley Hotel which was in Easton, Washington. She writes "I'm not sure when he moved to Easton, WA but this letter to my grandmother was dtd. 1922/23. I will receive a copy of the letter soon which tells a bit more about this family at the time. John L. Ashley and his wife Jennie Johnson Ashley are buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Cle Elum. Perhaps you could tell me where I might find more about this family. Do you know anyone that might have the 1910 Census to see if this Ashley family was in this area by that time?" A separate email states the following: "I'm seeking any descendants of the John L. Ashley b 5 Nov 1862 in Ashe Co., NC. His wife was Jennie Johnson Ashley. They owned and operated the Ashley Hotel in Easton, WA in the early 1920's. John and Jennie are buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Cle Elum. Their children were: Elizabeth "Lizzie" b 12-24-1888, Henry Ashley b May 16, 1890, Howard Ashley b June 24, 1892, Cora Lee Ashley b June 25, 1894 and Raymond Ashley b Oct. 12, 1900. I have quite a bit on the history of this family from their birth place of Ashe Co., NC. Will gladly share." - Janice Isaacs Pilkington (janice@w- link.net) Sharon Bart Listowner and County Sponsor

    1. Stampede Pass Tunnel
    2. Phillip Shire
    3. I am interested in ANY information that anyone has concerning the events surrounding the construction of the Stampede Pass Tunnel in the 1880's. My great-grandfather John A. HASKELL died on 6 October 1886, presumably in an accident related to the tunnel's construction. He was not a Kittitas County native; he was from Goldendale, Klickitat County, where he had left his wife and children. His estate was probated in Klickitat County, but the records clearly state he died in Kittitas County. Our family has always known that he died during the construction of the tunnel, in an explosion or cave-in or some such disaster. If anyone has anything -- yellowed newspaper clippings rotting away in some old album, old letters describing any such incidents, knowledge of a gravesite, etc., please check to see if my ancestor's name is mentioned therein. In 24 years of research I have not found anything but the aforementioned probate record, and I have corresponded extensively with Northern Pacific Railroad archivists, various historical societies, etc. to no avail. Thank you!!! Nancy S. Shire Oro Valley, AZ P.S. Does anyone know who is buried in the small fenced-off cemetery located in the middle of Stuart Anderson's cow pasture, visible from the highway as you head up toward Cle Elum? This has always bugged me, and I've never found anyone who can give me an answer. Just curious.

    1. Jacob/Elizabeth DURR
    2. George Engelhardt
    3. Hello Everybody: My name is Bud Engelhardt. My wife, Virginia, and I live in Spokane, Washington. We are the third generation of both side of our family to have been born in Washington. We will be retiring from the work force the last day of April of this year, so we have been around here for a long long time. Our interest in genealogy began about five years ago. And though we have been going by the seat of our pants all this time, we intend to really get involved after retiring. Our interest in Kittitas county is due to my Great Grandfather, Jacob DURR and my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth WITT. They came to Ellensburg from Indiana in the year of 1879. They brought with them two children, Bertha and Charles. By late1879 they had another daughter, Anna. Clara (my grandmother) was born in 1880 and Matilda was born in 1882. Jacob DURR was born in Mecklenburg, Germany about 1849.After leaving Indiana and coming to Washington in 1879 he was credited with engineering the road over the Umtanum between Yakima and Ellensburg Washington. He built and operated a toll bridge across the Yakima River near Ellensburg. He owned and operated a saloon at Robbers Roost (later known as Ellensburg). He was the original discoverer of the Friday Mine and was well known in mining circles. We know he had a brother, Pete and a sister, Mary. Elizabeth WITT was born in Germany in 1849. She and Jacob were probably married in Indiana about 1874 and she died in Feb. 1884 just 2 years after the birth of their youngest daughter. She should be buried someplace near Ellensburg, however, we have not found where yet. In September of 1896 Jacob DURR fell overboard a steamer while traveling up the Methow Rapids in the Columbia River and drowned. A month later his body was found near Rock Island. We have not found his grave either. His family was sent to an orphanage, then farmed out to families all over Kittitas County. They stayed in touch throughout their lives however. With the exception of not knowing where Jacob and Elizabeth are buried, we have a good basic knowledge of my grandmother Clara DURR's family. However her siblings and their families are a real challenge. Please feel free to email us at any time concerning anything, especially genealogy. Our address is mailto:george@arias.net
