This came from my cousin Pat, and in my haste to clean it up, I deleted the author who shared it with the list Pat is on.... Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on.
Hi Listers, I imagine many of you know that I am the assistant to Kevin Fraley on the Washington Cemetery project. This has been a huge undertaking for Kevin. While I help, there is so much he has to do himself without me doing anything except bothering him... which I dearly love to do several times a day, actually you might call it, irritate him. This keeps him on his toes and wishing he had never heard of me, but he might get bored if I stop. Kevin told me once he did not think it was possible to ever get all the cemeteries on line, and we are showing him it really is a possibility. Not this year, but it can happen. We will never have simply everyone up there, but we can have all the cemeteries we can find......up to a certain date....We are actually seeing some counties almost finished.... In 5 counties we have all cemeteries adopted and being worked on, at least we think we do. I do not see us having any one county up on line this year totally, but it will happen soon. This is only possible because we have so many volunteers willing to give of their time to survey the cemeteries, then transcribe their findings and sharing it with us. At the moment I have some things to emphasize.....Check out what Kevin is doing on the page. He has taken on the task of updating all 39 counties, but first he finds out their name and all the aka's - plus he finds out the legal description, Twp, Range and Section for them. To accomplish this he has used about 4 different reference guides plus he takes trips to that county to make sure he is correct......I keep telling him to invite me, but he doesn't. I would like to see all those cemeteries too. He fears Maggie might con him into reading one again.....<g> Seriously, check out this huge undertaking.......He now has 13 finished and is working on Thurston next. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wa/wacem.htm Then you will notice we need workers in Okanogan county bad. I can tell you that Ferry, Stevens, Spokane, Pend Oreille and Walla Walla counties are all adopted unless someone can't fulfill their job, which happened recently with the sudden death of one of our volunteers. You must always check with Kevin first to make sure no one has adopted before you start. This will always be, as we cannot have two people adopting the same one. Yakima, Kittitas, Klickitat, Lincoln & Whitman counties also need more workers.....the other counties are on line with the listings so you can check what they need. I am speaking of Eastern Washington. All of the counties need workers on the west side.....I am told they only get the sun for a month a year, so they will need our help eventually <G>....who can write on paper in the rain....??? Anyone in Washington, wanting to help... contact either me or Kevin. We only have about 2 months left, if that long to go to the cemeteries and survey them. All winter to type them up. Now for you Northern Idaho readers.....I have read a few over there, but do not work on that page. You can check the following URL to see what they need.... http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/idaho.html Then contact Stacey L. Orchard if you wish to adopt. Maggie Rail EWANIDA-listowner

I just talked with a person who works in the newspaper office in Cle Elum. She looked up the Ronald School. There was no reference to Jonesville having a school, but since they are so close the school you are asking about is probably the Ronald School. There was a record snowfall, in 36 hours 5 feet of snow fell in 1916. Later the same year, there was a fire destroying the original Ronald School which was built in 1890. At 09:50 PM 4/27/99 -0700, you wrote: >WAKITTIT-D Digest Volume 99 : Issue 8 > >Today's Topics: > #1 Jonesville [LIgene1@aol.com] > >Administrivia: >To unsubscribe from WAKITTIT-D, send a message to > > WAKITTIT-D-request@rootsweb.com > >that contains in the body of the message the command > > unsubscribe > >and no other text. Hello, I feel that our meeting went well today and I thank all who came and shared what they are doing. It was great to meet all of you. There were only 20 who could make it but so good to put a face to that e-mailer I am working with. Kevin Fraley explained the work of the Archives files which he takes care of and Celia Tomlin explained her responsibilities at the State page. Workers are still needed in so many areas I will not attempt to list them all. I can speak for the cemeteries....We need workers in many counties. Spokane, Walla Walla and Stevens are getting nearly finished, a few undone. One needs to contact Kevin or me and make sure it is not adopted before you read one, since they are not always listed on the web as being adopted. We really would like to have all of them up once before we go back and start updating. When we have so many unread, no need to duplicate, plus this creates a problem for Kevin, (who should get their file up???) the one who adopted it first and is still working on it or the one who just sent it in without asking if it was adopted? Hello, I'm new to your list. I'm looking for any information on the family in the attached file. I have letters written in the 1890-1900 time period from Rulina to her brother and my great grandfather George Washington Steorts in West Virginia. Would like to know when they settled in Washington State and any other information. They left Jane Lew, Lewis Co. (W)VA in late 1850s. Pictures would be too much to hope for (?). The letters talked about harvest time and sound like the family had been there for some time. Wonder how large was the farm? Son Will (for William?) married late and had no children. Newton Maxwell Bott had at least 3 children. He may have been a deputy sheriff, perhaps in another county, when he was a young man. I'd appreciate any information. Thanks. Linda Steorts Kaufman P. O. Can anyone tell me if there was a school located there in the early 1900's (1906 - 1915). A person advised that you had to climb a large number of stairs to get to the door but in winter with so much snow you could go in without the stairs. I am not sure if the person was describing the Ronald school or Jonesville. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi everyone: I am researching the following names in the Ellensburg/Thorp area: PAGE, GIDDINGS, CASEY, COBLE, ROSS, YEARWOOD, PEASE, SACKETT, and BIERS. My Page family moved to Ellensburg in 1875 from KS, so I have a lot of family history in the area. I would like to exchange information with anyone connected. Andrew Green and family moved to Thorp from North Dakota around 1886. Andrew was part of a large family of lumber barons in central Michigan and a short bio. states that he was in the lumber business in Thorp....I suspect as a laborer rather than operator at this point. Is anyone aware of what logging companies were operating in the area around this time? Andrew's sister in law was also in the area and applied for her husband's Civil War pension while living in Ellensburg in 1890. We can't find any evidence that Algernon Green ever actually lived here himself, but his widow appeared to have remarried and signed the application as Mary C. Beede along with a grandson, George Green. Do any of these names ring any bells? Sue Perrault Sumner, WA

Hi to all, Here is my reply to the roll call. My grandfather Peter EDWARDS (1882 - 1964) and my uncle Jack EDWARDS (1880 - 1957) owned farms somewhere in the Thorp area. Is there any way to get the land records and possibly the naturalization records on these two? There was also two more brothers ( Steve Evan EDWARDS (1875 - 1956) who died in Ellensburg and Richard (Dick) EDWARDS that lived there for a while and then move to the Tacoma area.) They all were born in Dyserth, Flintshire, N. Wales. I do not know the date that they moved to Washington, but do know part of the family, including their mother lived in Caledonia, Wisconsin. Hope you are right, I have heard very little from this list and would like to know there are more people "lurking" around out there just like me. Hi Fred, So far, I've only seen you and me on this list. I don't know the exact answer to your question, but do know that sometimes the Corps of Engineers get involved when graves need relocating. Maybe, they can answer your question. Or, a cemetery? If I find out anything more definitive, I'll let you know. Question for you! There is a small cemetery in Douglas County that has had many of its graves moved into town. To move a grave, what legal "hoops" have to be jumped before this could be done? Would a person have to go to the County Courthouse to do such? If so, which office? Any and all ideas appreciated. (Sorry to those that got more than one of this!) Fred Pflugrath Peshastin, WA
Maybe somebody on this list can help me sort this out. Per his half-sister's obit in 1914, who died in Illinois, ANSON LOW was living in Boylston, Washington. After that, I've lost him! He was born in Havana, Illinois, October 14, 1845. Does this surname ring a bell with anybody? Do you know if there are searchable obits available for that town, after 1914? Thanks, Karen
