Hello all, I have been asked by a group of California cemetery preservationists to help locate the burial site(s) of a family named Chote/Choate. The purpose is to identify whether or not the father is buried in an historic cemetery in California. Any help would be appreciated. The surname is Choate, sometimes spelled Chote. The given names are Rufus M., or Rufus Marc, or Rufus A. Choate, John Brown Choate, Sr., John Brown Choate, Jr. and William Silas Choate. -------------- Andrea D. Hello All, I am new to this list (have only just found it). I am hoping someone can help me, as I have been looking for these folk for a long time and we hope to visit this area in June/July. On our family tree we have HARRY JOHNSON born in Lavendon, England 1856 who travelled to U.S.A. in the late 1870's. Harry settled in ELLENSBURG, marrying and later inheriting his wife's family's farm in Ellensburg. Harry had a son CECIL JOHNSON born February 1892. Cecil married 3 times, the 3rd time to Beulah ? We have no other information on these wives. Cecil we believe remained in the Ellensburg area all his life. Cecil in turn had a son WILLARD JOHNSON (not sure from which marriage) We do know that WILLARD was working in Alaska on a Hydro Electric Project in 1960. Willard had a son BILL JOHNSON (presumably William) This is all we know on this family except in 1980 when we were living in Kaikohe (New Zealand) we had a visit from a CAROL WILLIAMS who was somehow related to this family. Unfortunately I do not have an address or details, but she would have been appx. 20years. She has probably married by now. I do hope someone can help me as I am getting desperate to find some descendants of these JOHNSONS before we come over to U.S.A. Any ideas where I could get help would also be most welcome. Many thanks, Kind Regards, Norma Johnson, New Zealand
Hello All, I am new to this list (have only just found this site) and hope someone is able to help me. In the late 1870's HARRY JOHNSON left U.K. and settled in Ellensburg, he married and later inherited his wife's family farm. Harry had a son CECIL JOHNSON who was born appx. February 1892. CECIL was married 3 times - the third time (I think) to a BEULAH ? CECIL had a son WILLARD JOHNSON (not sure from which marriage) who was working in Alaska in 1960 - not sure if this was temporary or permanent. WILLARD in turn had a son BILL. I have been looking for this family for a long time and as we hope to visit U.S.A. in June/July, would dearly love to find some descendants. We did have a CAROL WILLIAMS visit us here in N.Z. appx. 1980 - she was somehow connected to this family, she was appx. 20 then and would most likely be married now. Unfortunately I did not have the interest in genealogy then, that I have now. Hoping that someone can give me some leads, Kind Regards, Norma Johnson
I am looking for family of brothers John (Ivan) (b. 5/10/1860) and Anton (Antun) (b.1/26/1869) Brozovich (also spelled Brozovic'). They immigrated to WA from Mrkopalj, Croatia. They were recruited to work in the mines. My husband is a decendent of their brother Andy (Andrija) (b. 11/27/1865). Andy and brother Josip were recruited also and sent to western PA. Andy married Petrina (Petra) Padovich. She also has many brothers and sisters that immigrated to the US some of which seem to have gone to WA. I have recently received information from Croatia that would be of interest to Brozovich and Padovich researchers. Please contact me at PETRNMSN@aol.com Cindy Petrack

Trying to reach descendants of Rulina Steorts (or Storts) 1832-1923 who married John Jacob Bott. They moved from (West) Virginia to Ellensburg, WA in the 1800s. July 18, 2000 Dear Cousin, This is a rather lengthy letter but I hope you will find the enclosed information interesting. If your last name is STEORTS, your grandparents, great grandparents, great great grandparents or maybe even another generation back, were probably George Washington Steorts and Amanda Jane Cookman. They were born in Jane Lew, Lewis County, (West) Virginia, George in 1834 and Amanda in 1833. They both died in Wallback, Clay County. West Virginia, he in 1914 and Amanda in 1907. I believe that their descendants are the only ones that spell the name STEORTS. Some of our cousins spell the name STEORTZ and one whole branch of the family, those who descend from G. W. Steorts brother Perry Commodore Storts who moved to Missouri in the 1850s, use STORTS. Of course this includes only those who come down through a male line. It is more difficult to identify those with Steorts females in their background. I am a great granddaughter of George and Amanda Cookman Steorts through their son William Washington Steorts. My father was George Ernest Steorts, 1895-1965. Our common heritage is an interesting one. Family tradition says that the immigrant George came from Germany to Philadelphia about 1750 and later fought under George Washington during the Revolutionary War. One of his children and our ancestor, George Steorts 1769-1851, was born near Hagerstown, MD. The family came west across Braddocks old road. Later our George settled in what is now West Virginia and at least one brother moved on westward. We are not sure of the original spelling of the name, only that it was almost certainly not STEORTS. STORTS may be closer. Some day I hope to find out. I am sending this letter for several different reasons: 1. To find as many of our extended family as possible, and to gather and combine the family heritage that our far-flung family branches may have preserved. 2. To see if there is enough interest to hold a family gathering in 2001 or 2002. I live about twenty miles from the site where George Steorts settled by 1817. There are some nice facilities in the area where such a gathering could be held, maybe for two or three days, and I would be willing to organize one if there is enough interest and others would be willing to help. 3. This is not a sales pitch, but this item is passed along for those who may be interested. There is a new Lewis County history book just published that includes about 6000 words of our family history that I submitted. The sixteen pictures include one of George Washington STEORTS and his wife Amanda Jane Cookman and one of his brother Perry Commodore STORTS. If anyone is interested, I will be glad to give you the contact information for the group. The book is about $60 plus shipping. I am willing to share any of my data directly with you. If there are many requests I may need to collect for copying and postage. For those who use e-mail, just send me your on line address. Attached is a limited family tree. Will you please see how you fit in and send me as much information as you are willing to share? Would you be interested in being listed for further sharing of information via e-mail? And would you want to be notified if we try to organize a family reunion during the next two years? If you are not interested in any of this will you please at least pass this along to others in your family who may be interested, or better, send me contact information for them. Donna, Thanks so much for the important message on saving the Cemeteries. I feel that this is an important part of genealogy and family history. I did sign the petition and sent it to a friend. Hope this will be something that we can encourage the right people to address and do something about it. Mary fuller@eburg.com PS. I am involved with the Genealogy Society in Northern Kittitas Co. Ed. Was he an immigrant? He may have applied for naturalization. If he did in Kittitas County they have a card file at the court house telling when and then near the college is the office of vital records. You can get a copy from them. I did that last Summer for my grandfather. They have quite a bit of information on the application. There may have been two John A. & Rebecca Wilsons in Kittitas Co. One of them wed Rebecca Watkins 24 Aug 1867, Fremont Co. IA. Carolyn Murphy's couple [see Queries Kittitas Home Page] came from IA in the 1870s and appears on the 1880 Census of Payette [Ada] Co., ID. Their children are Mary 10, Sarah 7 and Edward L. 5, all b. IA. We think it is that couple who then appears on the Kittitas 1900 Census, Swauk Precinct. John is 56 and Rebecca is 51, both b. IA. But this couple and the one below both have earlier MO roots. The same names, John A.. & Rebecca, appear on the Kittitas Co. 1885- 87-89 Territorial Census. There John and Rebecca are both 45 and b. IA. [The Rebeccas are the same age] Their children are Florence & Geo., both b. IA and Effa [Effie], b. KS. abt. 1881/82. Florence m. Geo. Eby Myers in Ellensburg 1 Jun 1891. their children were: John W., Jesse F., Francis M. & Thomas L. [See CleElum Pct.1900 Census, pg 89.]. John and Rebecca's eldest child was Etta May who m. Fred W Smith. I believe this is the same as the May (Wilson} Smith, listed under Births, on the Kittitas Home Page. Two of her five children are listed there, but only one of them, John Earl Smith has a given name listed. If there were two John & Rebeccas where did they die? What was the maiden name of the other Rebecca? What was both John's father's name?

I received this from another list and decided I would pass it on to you all. Donna Twas The Day Before Yesterday TWAS the day before yesterday and all through the branches, NOT a name to be found, none of my ancestors. THE Journals and Bibles were dusty and worn, WHY should we care, these kinfolk are gone. THE pictures of children and family, long ago dead, ARE scattered, crinkled, and crammed under beds. DAD in his chair, and I with a book, HAD just settled back to give the TV a look. WHEN out on the street there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter. ON the way to the window I tripped with a crash, I tore open the curtains and looked through the glass. THE sun in the sky was nowhere in sight, THE clouds were so gray, it could have been night. WHEN what to my wondering eyes should appear, THE Mailman with packages, letters and cards of good cheer. THE driver was grumbling while sorting his letters, I knew in a moment, things had to get better. THE size of one letter stood out from them all, A distant cousin was asking about family, one and all. THE names of Grandpa and Grandma, Great Grandparents all, NEXT came my Father, my Brother, and Uncle Paul. FROM cousins and uncles to aunts and nephews, NIECES and in-laws, just to name a few. SO through the many journals and photos, and stuff I possessed, MY search for my ancestors slowly progressed. WHILE up the family tree I gradually climbed, MY ancestors names, I was seeking to find. UPON that tree I have carved many a name, THE branches of which, will never be the same. THE tree is now filled with many I've found, BUT in the search for others, now I am bound. THE ancestors whose names, I have written with love, THE Lord has gathered to take to His Father above. WITH so many names yet to be carved on that tree, I have little time to waste on games and TV. GATHERING names, photos, histories and places, REQUIRES a lot of love, patience, and God's good graces. SOME were Farmers, Soldiers and such, Mothers and Fathers who struggled much. SOME were Settlers, who traveled far, some Adventures, who followed the stars. SOME were rich but most were poor, they came by ship, seeking more. SOME died young, others old, many their stories yet untold. I cried when I thought of those brothers and sisters, FOR I am who I am, thanks to my ancestors. MY family is but one branch on the Tree of Life, A tree that grew strong through toil and strife. ALONE, I'm just a bare twig or a stub, TOGETHER we build a Family Tree of Love (Written by Linnie Vanderford Poyneer one night after a long day of research)
