McCafferty, for seventeen years a practitioner of law in this city, who died at his home, 912 Twelfth Avenue North, Tuesday morning, were held from the family residence at 3 o'clock this afternoon under the auspices of Seattle Lodge No. 92, B.P.O.E., of which he was a member. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Bonney-Watson Company. Cremation followed. ========== Report of Proceedings of the Annual Convention - Washington State Bar, 1917 Page 199 James J. McCafferty One of the most popular members of the Seattle bar, James J. McCafferty, died on November 2, 1915. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, December 2, 1854. Educated in the public schools of that city and in Holy Cross College at Worcester, Massachusetts. He studied for the legal profession in the Law School of Boston University and began practice in Worcester with his father and an uncle. He served several years in the Massachusetts House of Representatives; visited South America in pursuit of health; accepted the chair of English Literature in the American College in Buenos Aires, of which institution he became president in 1880 and so served for several years before returning to the United States. He located in St. Paul and served in many offices of public trust, including United States commissioner for the St. Paul District, and Judge of the Circuit Court of Minnesota. He was General Counsel for the St. Paul & Minneapolis Interurban Railway Company. Seventeen years prior t! o his death he removed to Seattle and entered into general practice. A friend who knew him well in St. Paul, as well as in Seattle, M.J. Costello, paid this deserved tribute to him: "Judge McCafferty, as a political orator in his younger days, had few equals. He was an able, conscientious lawyer, but he will be best remembered among his associates, perhaps, as a genial, companionable gentleman, who always looked upon the better side of human life and conduct. He was a true friend, loyal advocate and a high-minded citizen always." ========== The Seattle Times Sunday, June 3, 1917 Page 69, Column 3 M'Cafferty-Dean Wedding The marriage of Miss Marion McCafferty, daughter of the late Judge James J. McCafferty to Mr. Ralph Cameron Dean of this city took place Friday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock at the First Christian Church. Rev. W.L. Fisher, pastor of the church, officiated. The ceremony was performed in the presence of relatives and intimate friends only. The bride wore a traveling suit of dark blue gabardine with a black hat and a corsage of orchids and roses. After a short trip Mr. and Mrs. Dean will be at home in this city. Mr. Dean attended the University of Washington. He is a member of Beta Theta Pi and of Phi Delta Phi honorary law fraternity. ========== The Seattle Times Sunday, December 10, 1972 Page B2, Column 5 Ralph Dean dies; retired executive Ralph C. Dean, 80, of 7311 Roosevelt Way Northeast, a retired executive of The Pacific Coast Coal Co., died Friday. Graveside services will be at 3PM tomorrow at Calvary Cemetery, directed by the Home Funeral Chapel. Mr. Dean, a native of St. Paul, graduated from the University of Washington Law School in 1917. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi, honorary law fraternity and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He was past President of the Seattle Executives Association. He is survived by his wife, Marion; a son, Richard Dean, Seattle and three grandchildren. ========== The Seattle Times Friday, June 25, 1982 Page 7, Column Marion C. Dean Beloved mother of Richard Dean, Seattle. Grandmother of Debbie Cossey, Woodville; Megan Dean and Jeffrey Dean, both of Seattle. Also, survived by two great-grandchildren. Family suggests remembrances to the Seattle Milk Fund of Children's Orthopedic Hospital. ========== The Seattle Times February 4, 2003 Richard "Dick" Dean May 13, 1920 - February 2, 2003 Richard Dean died peacefully at Swedish Hospital with his loving wife of 58 years and his three children at his side. Born in Seattle, Dick spent his childhood in Portland where he proudly attended Grant Elementary. His family returned to Seattle and Dick attended Franklin and then, Broadway High Schools, serving as Student Body President at the latter. Dick enrolled at the University of Washington, where he pledged Beta Theta Pi fraternity, belonged to Compass Chart, and worked as a basketball manager under Hec Edmondson. When World War II came, Dick joined the Navy, serving in the Aleutian Islands. Mr. Dean was a contract negotiator for Boeing for 25 years. Following retirement, he enrolled and graduated from Seattle University's Drug and Alcohol Counseling Program. He worked compassionately and effectively in this field for over ten years, saving many lives. Dick had many lifelong interests, including Scouting (he attained the rank of Eagle Scout), golfing, Husky fan (he was a 50 year season ticket holder), avid reader and library volunteer where he worked to establish the North East Friends of the Library. He enjoyed his memberships at the Sand Point Community Church, Seattle Athletic Club and Evergreen Investors. His many relatives and friends will remember Dick as family-oriented, a life-long learner, humorist, friend and mentor to many and grower of great tomatoes! His family includes his wife, Marnie McCallum Dean; his children, Debbie and Coss Cossey, Megan Dean and Jeff and Robin Dean; four grandchildren, Wayland and Kori Cossey, Cameron and Jackson Dean. Dick's life will be celebrated at a Memorial Service on Friday, February 7th at 1PM at the Sand Point United Methodist Church (4710 Northeast 70th, Seattle). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the North East Branch of Friends of the Seattle Public Library.
