Betts Funeral services for Charles E. Betts, 65 years old, who died at his home at Redondo Beach Monday, were held at 3 o'clock this afternoon in the Chittenden Funeral Parlors in Kent. Mr. Betts came to this state twenty-eight years ago and bought property at Stone's Landing, which later he renamed Redondo Beach. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Betts; a son, Weston J. Betts; his father, James W. Betts and a sister, Mrs. Ida M. Hurd, all of Redondo Beach. Other relatives are living in Iowa. ***** The Seattle Times Sunday, December 18, 1960 Death Takes Mrs. Betts, 95, Auburn Mrs. Mary Ellen Betts, 95, of Auburn, a resident of the area since 1898, died Thursday in a nursing home. Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock tomorrow in the Price Chapel, Auburn. Burial will be in Sumner. Born in Goshen, Indiana, Mrs. Betts and her husband, Charles, arrived at Stone's Landing, later Redondo Beach, aboard the Defiance, which ran daily between Tacoma and Seattle. Mr. Betts, who died in 1926, operated a grocery at Redondo Beach Park. Surviving are a brother, William S. Horning, Falls Church, Virginia; a sister, Mrs. Ida Hallowell, Asheville, North Carolina; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. Mrs. Betts was a member of Dorcas ladies' Aid, Redondo Beach, for 50 years and a member of Cyclamen Chapter No. 65, Order of the Eastern Star. ***** The Kent News-Journal Thursday, April 7, 1938 Isaac S. Hurd, 84, retired Redondo Postmaster and widely known pioneer of that community, died late Monday night at his home in Redondo following a short illness. He had been a resident of the Redondo community since 1899 and had served as Postmaster for the community for 33 years. Failing health caused him to resign from post office work a year ago. Born June 22, 1854 in Schenectady, New York, he early moved with his parents to Wisconsin. From there the family moved to Kansas where he lived until he came to Redondo 39 years ago. Survived by his widow, Ida M. Hurd of Redondo; son, Wilmer C. Hurd and daughter, Alice M. Brengman, Redondo; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services for Mr. Hurd were held Wednesday afternoon from Chittenden Funeral Chapel with Rev. Rodney Arney of Kent officiating. Burial was made in the Sumner Cemetery. ***** The Kent News-Journal Thursday, November 13, 1941 Ida May Hurd, 77, widely known Redondo resident, died Sunday morning at her home. Mrs. Hurd recently suffered a fall which fractured 5 ribs and this was believed to have hastened her death. She had served as Assistant Postmaster at Redondo for 33 years and had made her home there for 41 years. A member of a pioneer family, Mrs. Hurd was born March 16, 1864 at DeWitt Iowa, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Betts. In 1899 she came west with her husband and five children to Washington. Before moving to Washington she had lived at Des Moines Iowa. She was a member of the Methodist Church, a charter member of the Dorcas Ladies Aid Society and was an ardent worker in the local Red Cross Chapter. She was married to Isaac Hurd in Kansas in 1883. He preceded her in death in 1938 at Redondo. Surviving are a son Wilmer, Redondo and a daughter Mrs. Alice Brengman, Redondo. The late Charles Betts was her brother. Final rites were conducted yesterday afternoon in the chapel of the Chittenden Funeral Home with Rev. W.E. Callahan of the Kent Methodist Church officiating.
