Faber (Ruth Karr) whose great-grandparents were Mary and Elkannah Walker. The Walkers, bride and bridegroom, arrived at the Whitman Mission at Waillatpu, near Walla Walla, then the most northerly outpost, by overland trek in 1830. They later moved to Chimakain with the Rev. and Mrs. Cushing Eels where they lived for nine years teaching the Indians. Mary Walker, whose well-kept dairies and letters tell of the journey made mostly on horseback also mention making 12 dozen candles as part of one day's chores. The Walker history has been written by Mrs. Faber's aunt, Mrs. Ruth Karr McKee, the first woman Regent of the University of Washington and for whom McKee Hall is named.
