Helland, who had lived in Tacoma for the past 16 years, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Avalon Care Center in Federal Way. He was 90. Mr. Helland was born July 5, 1913, in Roy, to Nels and Ingeborg Helland. On September 21, 1947, he married Erma Pelke. She survives him in Tacoma. He was part owner of Woodlawn Plywood in Hoquiam until 1956. He retired from Lamb-Grays Harbor as a machinist in 1980. Mr. Helland was a member and past president of the Aberdeen Eagles F.O.E. No 24. He was in the drum and bugle corps with the Eagles. He loved to travel, especially to Reno and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren, family members say. In addition to his wife, Mr. Helland is survived by a son, Gary Campbell of Federal Way; two daughters, Joan Pirttila of Montesano and Linda Croy of Stevenson; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. He was the youngest of 13 children and the last remaining child. A grandson, Jimmy, also died previously. Service arrangements will be announced later.
