Carpenter died two hours later at the city hospital. According to the story related to the police by Mrs. Carpenter, the quarrel started when Carpenter retired at an early hour and objected to his wife sitting up and reading. In the struggle that ensued the woman was choked until she was unconscious and Carpenter left the house. Going into the backyard he shot himself. Neighbors attracted by the shooting notified the police and Motorcycle Policeman R.S. Webb and Chad Ballard investigated and sent the wounded man to the city hospital. He died without regaining consciousness. Mrs. Carpenter was not seriously hurt. The couple had been married ten years and have two children.
