Author: sgs14 Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.washington.counties.king/3539.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Seattle Times May 3, 1980 Fisherman dies, overcome by gas fumes Al J. Hillyer, a 70 year old commercial fisherman from Seattle, was found dead yesterday in the cabin of his 30 foot trawler after the vessel went aground before daylight at Double Bluff, between Useless and Mutiny Bays on Whidbey Island. The Island County Sheriff's Department said Hillyer of 7520 19th Avenue Northeast was traveling alone when he apparently was overcome by gasoline fumes while working on the engine. The motor cover of the boat was off and tools were scattered near it. An autopsy will be performed today, the Sheriff's office said. Gasoline leaked onto the beach, but there was no fire, authorities said. The name of the boat was "Doc." The Coast Guard made preparations for floating the boat at high tide. Upon learning of the mishap, the Coast Guard lowered an investigator from a helicopter onto the boat to determine if anyone was aboard and then wet the beach area around the boat because of the leaking gasoline. The Seattle Times Tuesday, May 6, 1980 Liston Jack Hillyer Sr. Age 70. Died May 1 on his boat. Came to Washington in 1928. Owned sporting goods stores including the Cunningham Ski Lodge. He also fished commercially. He is survived by his wife, Glenna; sons, Jack Jr. and Peter; and three grandsons. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, 7:30PM, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 6553 40th Avenue Northeast, Seattle. Memorials may be made to Ascension Lutheran Church or to favorite charity.
