Author: EDCRF Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.washington.counties.king/6859.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Seattle Times Monday, February 24, 1930 Page 4, Column 5 Pacific Northwest Lumberman Succumbs; Leaves Career of Achievement Edward G. English, 79-year-old pioneer Pacific Northwest lumberman and one of the founders of Mount Vernon, died yesterday morning at his home, 1161 21st Avenue North. Mr. English, a native of Massachusetts, came to the Puget Sound region in 1877. Since that time he had taken a colorful part in the logging activities of Western Washington and British Columbia. He was one of the organizers of the Pacific Logging Congress, President of the English Lumber Company of Seattle, President of the Lyman Timber Company of Everett and Vice President of Wood & English Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia. The veteran lumberman was a member of the Masons, Elks and Odd Fellows fraternal organizations of Seattle and also belonged to the Arctic, Rainer and Inglewood Country Clubs. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Alice K. English; a daughter, Mrs. T.W. Doan of Duluth, Minnesota and a son, Hugh L. English of this city. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. ========== Skagit News Herald Thursday, February 27, 1930 Masonic Rites Mark Burial of Pioneer Funeral held Wednesday in Seattle; Camps and Mills shut down; Great throng attends services; Floral tributes many and beautiful Edward G. English, who died in Seattle Sunday morning, was borne to his last resting place in Washelli Cemetery yesterday afternoon. Episcopal services were held at the Bonney-Watson Chapel. Dr. McLaughlin, rector of the church which the late pioneer attended, preached the funeral sermon. Burial rites were conducted by the Mount Baker Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Mount Vernon, with N.B. Hannay officiating. Mr. English was a charter member and of the founders of this lodge. The active pallbearers were James O'Hearne of Mount Vernon; Will Morrison, Anacortes; Guy Buck, Hamilton; Harley LaPlant, Lyman; H.E. Hanson, Seattle; Charles Westrom, Everett. Among the honorary pallbearers were A.F. McEwan, business associate of Mr. English; E.C. Million, former Mount Vernon lawyer, both of Seattle; H.W. Sessions of Arlington, one time resident of Mount Vernon and formerly employed at the English headquarters camp. Old-time friends, business associates and employees joined the bereaved family yesterday in Seattle to bid farewell to Edward G. English. The Bonney-Watson Chapel was a vast bower of floral tributes. Hundreds of beautiful floral pieces were massed against the rear and side walls, tributes from hundreds. Here was the bier of one of the Northwest's most widely known old settlers, one of the state's empire builders. The funeral procession to Washelli was more than a mile in length. Camps and mills with which Mr. English was associated were closed for the day. Besides the Masons, who attended in a body, scores of friends from Skagit County went to Seattle yesterday to be present at the funeral services. Mr. English was a native of Maine, born in 1850. As a small boy he moved to Wisconsin with his parents, settling at Arcadia. When twenty years of age he came west, inspired by the words of Horace Greeley, "Go west, young man, go west." Some time was spent in California and Oregon, but before the end of that year he made his way to Skagit County. Mr. English was married soon after coming here, to Miss Alice Kessinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kessinger. Mr. Kessinger was at that time engaged in civil engineering work here. Plunging at once into merchandising and logging, Mr. English soon became heavily interested in Skagit County. In company with Harrison Clothier he ran a pioneer store and bought timber in his neighborhood. A ten-acre tract of land was purchased from Jasper Gages and a store was erected. A petition for a post office was granted and Clothier was appointed the first postmaster. That was in 1877. The small tract of land purchased by the pioneer firm became the first platted part of Mount Vernon. In 1890 the town was incorporated and a municipal government was organized. The following year Mr. English bought out the interests of his partner. For some time Mr. English engaged in the logging business at English Spur, now known as English, on the Great Northern line near Marysville. After that he formed a number of partnerships, finally becoming associated with A.F. McEwan of Seattle. At the time of his death Mr. English's interests included stock in the English Lumber Company, the Lyman Timber Company, the Skagit Mill Company, the Fidalgo Lumber and Box Company at Anacortes and Wood & English, Limited, at Vancouver, British Columbia. The old family home was sold in 1913 to Alfred Polson when the English residence was transferred to Seattle. Surviving are Mrs. English and a son, Hugh, residing in Seattle and a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Wirt Doan of Duluth, Minnesota. Waldo, another son, who died at the age of five, is buried in the local cemetery. ========== The Seattle Times Friday, March 7, 1930 Page 10, Column 8 Three To Share In English Estate The $1,000,000 estate of Edward G. English, Seattle lumberman who died here February 23me, is to be apportioned among members of his immediate family: His widow, Mrs. Alice K. English; his daughter, Mrs. Alice E. Doan and a son, Hugh L. English. Petition for probate of the estate was filed by the widow's attorneys, the firm of Peters, Powell, Evans & McLaren, in the Superior Court yesterday. The widow, under the will, will receive one-half the estate; the son and daughter one-quarter each. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: RBestrom7380 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.washington.counties.king/7442.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I did some research, however, there is no proof the information on a potential wife or son is the correct person. There just does not seem to be much information on this person. Your first source would be the National Cemetery. The Social Security Death Index: Frederick Huff, born 3 Jan 1906, died Feb 1971 (no day identified), "Last Residence:" Seattle, King Co. ---The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually lived or died. The Social Security Administration calls it simply the "home of record," and possibly the address where correspondence by the SSA was sent. It is not necessarily where any benefit was paid to the person, survivor, or the lumpsum death benefit (in years past, it was paid to anyone paying burial expenses, family member, funeral home, city/county, attorney; today, a living spouse). It is sometimes the location where the notification of death was sent to the SSA, sometimes where the lump sum death benefit was sent. ---The "last benefits" notation that appeared later on the SSDI was NOT necessarily concerning a benefit sent to that person. It was also identified for the location where the final Death Payment was sent. In the past, that might have been sent to a spouse, or ANYONE that had paid the burial costs. In recent years, the law was changed to just be a spouse. Persons are listed on the SSDI that had NEVER received a payment; but a surviving spouse had received the death payment, OR Survivor payments. AND, surviving children under 18 are also recipients of monthly payments as a survivor. The "last benefit" for a deceased might not appear because a survivor (spouse or child) are STILL receiving them. The SSA does NOT go back to add, change, or correct information. The Washington Birth Index: Frederick Charles Huff, born 2 Jan 1904 to Louis Charles Huff and Beulah Clara Merwin, born in Yakima County. The 1910 Census shows his birth about 1906. The WA Courts database system did not identify any cases in his name (Probate, etc). Washington Marriage records: Frederick C. Huff to Renee C. Banchero on 1 Feb 1930 in King County. Witnesses were Danny and Ada Cann. http://media.digitalarchives.wa.gov/WA.Media/jpeg/CE3CC8CE5DBA2BB3F3092A38BCD8C865_1.jpg The 1930 Seattle City Directory shows Rena C. Banchero, also living at the 4223 36th address is her brother Edward (from the 1920 US Census). The 1931 Seattle City Directory shows Renee C. Banchero, clerk at the John W. Graham, residence 673 Homer. The 1933 Directory shows Renee Banchero, usher Coliseum Theatre, residence 726 Pine. In 1934, she was living at 1326 7th Ave. --An online family tree shows a "Rena" Banchero, born 27 June 1907 in Black Diamond, King Co, WA, died 8 Feb 1986 in Seattle. She was buried in the Black Diamond Cemetery. Husband's name "Private." Burial: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=banchero&GSfn=rena&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSst=50&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=11290055&df=all& The King County Recorders Office identified a 1976 Warranty Deed (residence purchase), recorded on Feb 2, 1976. The Loan was satisfied on April 20, 1988. The names are Fred C. Huff and Shirley J. However, the original deed was recorded after the death of the person being researched. This "could" be a son? That would give the reason for the "last residence" being in Seattle. The document was not scanned. It does show the property in the Des Moines View Estates. --US Public Records show a Fred C. Huff, born 1 Feb 1932 residing at: 23321 17th Place S, Des Moines, WA (No date of residency). This person "could" be a son of the above Fred C. Huff and wife Rena/Renee; BUT, no proof the above is the correct person. --In 1996, the above was living at 702 Broken Dollar Ct, Odessa, MO 64076. Also recorded as living there, Shirley J. Huff, born 1935. --- www.zabasearch.com has a listing for both a Fred C and Shirley M in Chesterfield, MO. A Shirley J is shown in the same area. ---If you suspect this "might" be a son of Fred Charles Huff, write or call them. However, due to the name, the date of Petition, I would suspect this was the correct person. There were searches for heirs and possibly responding persons. There is one name identified, Andrew Carrigan. He could be an heir, or an administrator for the court, which I believe to be the case. If interested, I would suggest obtaining a copy of the Probate record. HOWEVER, do not request a copy of the ENTIRE case record as that would cost quite a bit. I would first attempt to determine if this is the "correct" person. This could be done by obtaining/review of just the initial "Petition For Solvency" http://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/Clerk/Records.aspx I would also suggest contact of the Mendocino County Recorder: http://www.co.mendocino.ca.us/acr/ Just because someone "dies" in a location, does not mean they had lived there, or lived there for any certain period of time. A lack of an obit "sometimes" means the person did not live in the area, or did not have enough family or friends to pay for one. The fact his body was moved to Mendocino County might have implications. This county does not have recorded documents or property data online. King COunty Death Certificates: http://www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/vitalstats/death.aspx I don't usually recommend obtaining these, but in this case it might answer questions. I'd also request a transfer permit (allowed the transfer of remains to California). I would also contact the Health and Human Services Agency in Mendocino County. They issue Burial Permits... http://www.co.mendocino.ca.us/hhsa/ The burial permit might identify family, it might identify the name of the funeral home handling the services (which may have records). To issue a burial permit, they would need the original death certificate and a transfer permit from King County to Mendocino County. I'd contact the cemetery to make sure he is actually there and this is not a cenotaph. I checked the recorded documents in the King County Auditor records, however there were far to many Robert L. Davis to find a correct one. There were no recorded documents in the 2004 time frame indicating a document concerning a transfer of property due to a deceased person. The "correct" person may not have owned property or had reason to record a document. There was a March 30, 2004, Power-of-Attorney from Robert L. Davis to a Nanci L. Davis.
