Mrs. G.H. Yesbera, wife of a well-known business man of this city, together with her sister, Miss Neva Bell, who left for the west some time ago in an effort to locate their father, Henry C. Bell, have been successful in their search and father and daughters met at Arlington, Washington, where Mr. Bell is superintending the construction of a new line of railroad. The father appeared greatly rejoiced at meeting his daughters. Bell left Auburn eighteen years ago and from that time his family practically lost track of him completely. He had been a prominent railroad contractor, but lost all his property and caused heavy losses to friends who had backed him. It is supposed he could not face these conditions and therefore left. I find Isabella in the 1850 census still in PA; she and her dtr, Henrietta (mispelled as Hengentta in census record) are in O'Nail HH - the O'nail wife is Margaret - I think this is Isabella's mom remarried so I think John Speer had died by then). Henrietta is my g grandmother and it looks like her mom wasn't married when H. was born (in the 1850 census, their surname is given as Speers; they always put an s at the end, unlike Isabella's brothers, William and James Speer). I don't know where the O'Nail's went but probably to Ia along with Isabella and Henrietta (I have a lot more work to do on this). Henrietta m James C Robinson (her 2nd husband; first was a Gilmore)- Henrietta had 4 Gilmore children, and several more with Robinson. (I think I have all of this posted at Rootsweb/Ancestry.com). Bagley The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company Chicago--Seattle 1929 Biography of Martin Monohon This is the background of Martin Monohon from Bagley's History of King County Volume 2 pages 866, 869 and 870. Monohon is the namesake of the lumber milling community that thrived on the eastern shore of Lake Sammamish for many years. Martin and Isabella ( Speer ) Monohon, the former a native of Crawford County, Indiana, while the latter was born in that part of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in which the City of Pittsburgh is now situated. Martin Monohon went to Iowa in 1847 and was married in Des Moines, that state. In 1852 he sold most of his horses, keeping four of the best, and also retaining some of the strongest wagons. Thus well outfitted he started on the long and arduous journey to the Oregon country. Mr. Monohon went over the old Barlow route and endured many hardships and privations while crossing the plains but arrived safely at his destination. Locating near Roseburg, in Douglas County, he filed a donation claim of six hundred and forty acres, consisting of timber and prairie land, and he cleared and developed the place, which was devoted to general farming and stock raising. During the '50s he volunteered for service in the Rouge River Indian war in southern Oregon, in which his brothers-in-law, James and William Speer, also fought as volunteers. If it is accurate, Isabella was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (near where Pittsburgh is now) Since you know her parents' names, you may be able to find them on a census record in PA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You have to start with what you have. You have her parents names and probably where she was born? So use that. Start with the 1825 census and use every variation of names that you can think of. You can even look at newspaper articles to see if any of her family moved with her and her husband. You can even look for her husbands surname in combination with her maiden name and see what comes up in later census material. Look for biographies, sometimes these are written by families, and might be exaggerated but they also give information such as siblings. Good Luck. ~M Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: oastwd Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.washington.counties.king/2670.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Seattle Daily Times Monday Evening, April 3, 1911 Page 4, Column 3 Seattle Pioneer Suddenly Dies Resident of City and Puget Sound Country for Thirty-Two Years Drops Dead of Heart Failure Body Unidentified For Time At Morgue While in life He Proved Himself Active in Republican Politics - Once Candidate for Mayor of Seattle In the sudden death last night of Angus W. Young, aged 60 years, a resident of Seattle since 1879, closed the life of a man who for thirty-two years had been actively identified with the growth and development of the Puget Sound country. Mr. Young was walking down Pine Street last evening, returning to his apartments over the Moore Theatre, when, at Bellevue and Pine Streets, he was stricken with an attack of heart failure and fell unconscious. There were no cards or letters upon his person to identify him and it was not until the body had been taken to the morgue that Mr. Young was identified by the name upon a key ring. Angus W. Young was born in New Brunswick, May 19, 1851. In 1876 he went to San Francisco and thence to Tulare County, where he was engaged in sheep raising until the fall of 1879, when he came to the Puget Sound country. Settled at Port Gamble Settling first at Port Gamble, he removed shortly afterward to Seattle, where he became identified with an Eastern life insurance company. This post he held until three years ago, when he organized the Cedarine Company, with offices at 66 Battery Street. Mr. Young was active in King County Republican politics and frequently was a delegate to county and state conventions. In 1896 he was a prominent candidate for the nomination for mayor of Seattle and after an exciting contest was beaten by Frank Black by only one vote. He was one of the leading organizers in the contest for the Cedar River water system and was one of those most active in the organization of the Charter Revision Commission, which revised the charter of Seattle in 1897. Where Best Known In 1901 he organized the Queen Anne Hill Improvement Club and shortly after was made Chairman of the Committee on Streets, which graded and improved one of the largest districts on the top of Queen Anne Hill. To a large number Mr. Young is best known for his activity in organizing the local Y.M.C.A. from 1880 to 1883. At the latter time the organization was so far completed that Mr. Young called the first General Secretary, Clark Davis, who before that had been Assistant General Secretary at Portland. Mr. Young is survived by one daughter, Mrs. E.A. Browne, of Vancouver, British Columbia and by two sons - Ralph A. and Fred A. Young, both of Seattle. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
