Bell for those interested in the founding of Seattle. The Seattle Times Thursday, December 18, 1958 Page 23, Column 1 Just Cogitating: W.N. Bell Was One Of First to Profit From Claim Seattle's founding fathers were a sterling group and William N. Bell was no exception. Bell was born on a farm in Illinois in 1817 and was a member of an old American family. With his wife and four children, he traveled to the Pacific Northwest by ox team in 1851. In Portland he joined the little band of Seattle pioneers on the schooner Exact for Puget Sound. There were 12 adults and 12 children in the party. They landed at Alki Point, being landsmen and not realizing the necessity of having a harbor. In the following spring they moved across the bay and settled in the wilderness that is now Seattle. Bell took up a 320 acre claim in the north end which became known as Belltown. For four years he struggled to clear the land and make a living farming, but after the Indian War in 1855 he moved with his family to Napa, California. There Mrs. Bell passed away, leaving him with five children, a son named Austin having been born in Seattle. Austin was the second white boy born in Seattle. The first Bell home was on First Avenue between Bell and Battery Streets In 1860 Bell returned to Seattle and was among the first to subdivide his claim into town lots. In 1872 Bell visited his old home in Illinois and there married a sister of his first wife. He early glimpsed the future of Seattle and contributed to it to the best of his ability. He donated a two block waterfront site for one of Seattle's first industries, a barrel factory and gave the site for one of Seattle's first churches. Bell was universally respected and never failed in the duties of good citizenship. He died September 6, 1887 and was laid to rest in the old Odd Fellows Cemetery. He was born September 14, 1889 in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. His perents were Patrick and Hanora "Johanna" (nee Tully) Fogarty. In 1910 (The Federal census.) I find him in Seattle, King County, Washington. May 23, 1918 he married Fay Johnson in Salt Lake City, Utah. That states that he was from Seattle, King County, Washington and she from Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. This leads me to believe Billy was Mormon, although he grew up Catholic. I can not find him or his wife in the 1920, 1930, or 1940 Federal census. According to some family tree notes from a great- aunt of mine Billy was married with 1 child and last known locale was Seattle, King County, Washington. He died some time betwen February 16, 1921 (Obituary of his brother Daniel where he is listed as living.) and February 23, 1942 (Obituary of his sister Katherine Fogarty where he is not mentioned as a surviving brother.). Any information on him, his family! , and or parents is greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. When you post an inquiry, try to identify an age or approximation. Do you know "where" she was born? If you don't know the full date of birth, what grade in school was she? Do you know when she graduated? Did she have any siblings? She was a pen pal, do you still have her address? That might identify her parents name from property records. How old was her father? What did he do? If her mother had a British accent, she "might" have been a war bride or daughter of war immigrants. When you say you spent the day ...along with her family, I'm "assuming" you mean her parents versus her own children. --Use the above suggestions in future searches. In June 1976, a Lindy Case, age 21, born in Toronto, Canada, married Andrew Harvey, age 27, born in England. (Was she born in Canada?). It appears they married in Des Moines...which is next to Zenith. This Lindy entered the US in 1961, petitioned for Naturalization in 1975. The form showed her full date of birth. One of her witnesses lived in Des Moines, the other lived on the Kent Des Moines Road, in Kent. --This petition shows she was living at 802 South 235th Place, Zenith, WA. I'm guessing your inquiry on her came after finding her in an address book with her DOB...celebrating it very recently. I found a Lindy Harvey with matching full DOB. I sent contact info via your email and via Ancestry message. Give her a call. Ron Bestrom Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
