    3. Just to add to the discussion. I got my gg grandparents marriage record in downtown Seattle for a $1. It was just written on a page in 1869. The same gg grandfather's death certificate from 1900 cost $17. I got these when visiting home in the summer of 2004. Both were quickly found for me with a great deal of interest being expressed in the age of the marriage record. All the staff were courteous. However I have never tried it by post. Karen

    1. Re: King county coroner's records for 1929?
    2. The scene of the accident would be on Broadway between Union and Pike (Union and Pike are parallel). Who was the death certificate signed by? Sometimes they are signed by a coroner and sometimes by a medical examiner. If it's signed by the coroner, then at least you know who he is. I'd bet if those records still exist, they're at the county clerk's office. Groan. But since it was a hit and run and she died because of it, it should have been investigated by the police as a vehicular homicide. They may not have done much with the investigation, if they couldn't find the driver, but there should be information in the file. That's if the file still exists. But that's another avenue to pursue. You might even google Seattle Coroner's Office and also check the website for the Seattle Police Department to see how far back records go for each. Hope this helps, Doris -- webduckie@yahoo.com wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 1. Re: Divorce Records in King Co.
    2. Even for a copy of my OWN marriage records in King Co. in 1968, I was advised that the best way was to appear in person to fill out the form and then again to pick it up. While at the time I lived in a Seattle suburb, I am disabled and don't drive. A very kind soul who at the time was researching her own family in the same record set did the work for me and didn't charge me a dime. I didn't need divorce records though--mine were in WI, and were very easy to get. They did cost me $30. If you are looking for official copies of your own records, you will need them for legal purposes and the cost is reasonable. But for each search for genealogical purposes, and then not to honor the request is a bit much. If you can find someone who will actually go to the courthouse for you, this should speed up the process. Even though you have spent the money and put in the request, if someone has a copy of your request, it still might help. It's harder to ignore the person on the oth! er side of the desk than the form at the bottom of the pile. Jurisdictions vary all over the map in what records they have, what they provide, what they charge, and how much they care. I recently learned that Cuyahoga Co OH (Cleveland) has an index of marriages at least as far back as 1850. I searched it and found about 30 for a surname of interest. They provided the marriage records for free, within 3 weeks! More info on the more recent, less relevant names, of course, but I got some useful stuff from it. 3. I would recommend contacting the relevant Washington Secretary of State Office. For the Seattle area it is located in Bellevue on the campus of the Community College there. Their web site is http://www.secstate.wa.gov/archives/ and you can use this site to search their digital records. However, the actual old books and indexes are kept in the Bellevue office for the Seattle area. They will search for you via an email request and simply ask for payment of the photocopies or however the document can be duplicated once the record has been located. This is very reasonable and they are very helpful, it just takes a little while for them to do the research. Their email address is: Archives@bcc.ctc.edu They have a message phone at 425 564 3940. There are also two other archival locations in Seattle - King County Archives: http://www.metrokc.gov/recelec/archives/gen.htm and the City of Seattle Archives: http://www.ci.seattle.wa.us/cityarchives/ Good luck! Olson (final decree 4 March 1929). What I received from the King Co. Superiour Court (for $30!), however, was only the interlocutory order and the final divorce order. Pretty sterile documents in terms of genealogical material. What I really hoped to get was the evidence presented in the case, summary of witness testimony, etc. I've received that when I've ordered divorce records in other states (Wisconsin, Iowa) and had expected the same here. Are those court files in a different location in King Co. Can anyone give me advice on how to order them? Sincere Thanks, Dixie Hansen dx@dxhansen.com

You should first look in the WA death index (our local library has it) to try to find a date of death, then you can scan the Seattle newspapers on microfilm (probably at the major libraries) for the obit. However, I'm copying a post on this mailing list which tells what the Seattle Genealogical Society can do to help with lookups. Another possibility for lookups might be http://raogk.com, where great volunteers around the country can help in their respective areas. Good luck to you, Kathy "This may help you out--one of the services we provide at the Seattle Genealogical Society is a research service, mostly used for death index lookups, obituary lookups, and city directory lookups. I have included the URL for the guidelines for this service.
