November 24, 2000 ALICE M. JAMES nee (CHENOIS) Lifelong Taholah resident and the village's first Postmaster Alice Margaret James died Monday, November 20, 2000, in Grays Harbor Community Hospital at Aberdeen. She was 59. (Grays Harbor County) Mrs. James was born Sept, 16, 1941 in Aberdeen to Daniel and Edwina (CURL)Chenois. She is the granddaughter of Henry T. Curl of this county. (LINCOLN CO.) She graduated from Moclips High School in 1959. She earned a degree in business administration from Grays Harbor College in 1962. On Dec. 27, 1967, she married Bryan D. James at Taholah. He survives her at the family home. Mrs. James was the director of the Community Action Program at Taholah in the mid-1960s and was the first editor of the "Nugguam" newspaper there. She was Taholah's Postmaster from 1971 until retiring in 1992. She was a member of the Taholah School Board from 1963 to 1989 and served on the Housing Board in the early 1980s. Mrs. James had also been a police commissioner, a member of the Taholah Athletic Club in the 1970s and was secretary/treasurer for the Quinault Indian Nation for several years. She was an avid bowler and had participated in league tournaments in various places on the West Coast. In her younger years, she enjoyed fishing on the Quinault River and beach combing and picnics on the beach. She had a dog named Duke. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kiwi Chenois Johnston of Taholah; two sons, Chris and Jason, both of Taholah; a sister, Edythe Chenois of Taholah, and three grandchildren. Two sisters, Louise Chenois Rosander and RoseAnn Chenois both died before her. Visitation will be until 6 p.m. today at the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam. A funeral is set for 10 a.m. Saturday Nov. 25, at the mortuary. A concluding service with vault interment will follow in Hoquiam's Sunset Memorial Park.
