2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: WAGES Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0FVBAEB/216 Message Board Post: This just happened to me recently so I'm still reeling from the effect of this "find" and whether it means anything or not. I decided to open up a box of belongings which my father (Lacey Clyde Wages) had left to me when he died and was given to my mother (Frances Dora Johnson Wages) and she gave it to me very shortly before her death. Inside of this small wooden box was a pair of very small wooden DUTCH shoes and a small brass sculpture of a DUTCH girl carrying a yoke over her shoulders with little water buckets dangling from small chains. Not only was I emotionally moved from the items he had chosen to leave to me there was the weird feeling that somehow he was sending a message. I was the only daughter of the three that had an interest in our heritage and had quizzed him even as a fourth grader as to our ethnic origins. I remember that Germany was one of those countries mentioned. Granted this is an emotional rather than hard data fact but never the less a question ! I will always wonder about. Sincerely, Pamela Lynn Wages Anderson

A lady named Katrina is from our line and has heard of this term "Black Dutch" in the family. Since you have information about Mary Carolina (and I'm wondering if she is indian) you may hold some infromation about why our family used this term. When you get settled into your house again please keep us in mind and reply when you have a chance. Regards, Jean

There are many theories about the meaning. For the Wages it could mean indian mix OR gypsy Or germans of dark complexion. I recently met a man whose name is Weger. He is from Germany and was very dark complexioned. He pronounced is name "Vagjur". The "w" in German is pronounced as our "v" sound. Did anyone in your family ever give an explaination as to the Wages heritage as it pertained to "Black Dutch"?

It was done by my Uncle Erskin Wages, who lived in AL. His parents were Julius Berry Wages, and Mary Isabel Roberts, who were from Ellistowm. MS, which is just a few miles from Pontotoc, MS. I haven't had a chance to research just how to go about getting the information from the tree, and unfortunately Uncle Erskin passed away since this was researched. Will post, or email, if you prefer, when I find anything.

My line also goes back to Bedford Forrest Wages and so forth. My great grandfather was Oliver Wages of Pontotoc, MIssissippi. Supposedly a relative did a family tree on the Wages and filed it with the State of Mississippi. This was done about 7 years ago. Haven't researched getting it yet. My email is krbagelgal@msn.com, not the one posted here.

I have recently found an obituary in September 1975, for a Cherry Mae Stewart Wages, wife of Jay B. Wages, which states that Cherry was buried in Smith Cemetery near Witter, Arkansas. She doesn't have a tombstone and no one seems to know who Jay B. Wages is. If you recognize this name, please contact me. Cherry was born in 1934, so I am assuming that Jay B. Wages would be close to the same age. Thanks for any help. Joy Russell jrussell44@aol.com

    1. [WAGES] Littleton Wages - Request for information
    2. Subj: Family Tree info Date: 8/15/02 11:03:39 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: Dkckhicks1994 To: MoMcCart My name is Karen Hicks. My Mom is Sandra Cunningham Nelson. Her aunt, Esther Harrison, recently passed away and we received some family history from Esther's son, Johnnie. Littleton Phillip Wages was my grandmother's(Lucille) (and Aunt Esther's) great grandfather. There is a Traxler/McFarland Family reunion in Girard, Kansas on September 15. I copied the information that Johnnie gave my Mom and decided to do a little research before the reunion and came up with your name through ancestry.com. Thought I would see if we are somehow related. I know that Minnie Wages was Esther and Lucille's mother. Minnie's brothers and sisters were Mary Ann(Nora), Richard, Phillipp, Sarah, Robert, William, Lucinda, Lula May and Bertha. I also know that Littleton was married to Susannah Biddison and that Susannah's parents were Samuel and Mary Ann. Minnie Wages was first married to Alvin Traxler - they had 6 children together - then after Alvin died, Minnie married Charlie McFarland and adopted his children from his first marriage and they had 1 son together. I know a lot of the history from the Traxler side, but we have not kept up with the Wages side. Can you offer any other information? Would love to be able to take some history to the reunion with me! Thanks.

    2. Dear Board, Littleton Mancel Hammitt Wages is my direct line also. My research has shown that ironically there were two Littleton's as shown within the same time frame. These are two different lines. I'm interested in the truth myself in regard to the history of the Mississippi Littleton's action as there are theories and speculation. During any war one is forced to compromise one's own ethics and values to a greater cause. Possibly this scenario is the case. It is my understanding that horse thievery was commonplace as all encroaching armies absconded and purloined goods and services along the routes taken. This includes both sides. I for one cannot and will not pass judgment on another dead or alive as I can only guess at what transpired. Yes, Littleton did go on to live in another place far from the site of the deeds done. Leaving behind those loved and hated. The perpetual gossip mill churned out stories of speculation and accusation. Now what we have over a century later is a host of unanswered questions. WOW! What a mystery to untangle as we the progeny poke and probe into our collective past. What a fun time we will have. Sincerely, Pamela Lynn Wages Anderson

He was found on the 1920 Federal Census living in Yuma, Co.Colorado, along with a woman listed as "wife" who's name was not Caroline, or Susanna. I am currently researching with some very high interest into The Wages/Copeland Game. There is a book entitled "The Life and Confession of the Noted Outlaw James Copeland" written by J.R.S. Pitts who was the sheriff who arrested James Copeland. there are lots of interesting info in that book
