    3. If anyone is interested in joining the Wages DNA Project...please visit Familytreedna.com or contact me at tonywages@charter.net. This is a good way to do something about those deadends in research and find out if and how we are related to the other Wages lines and other researchers who are looking for a connection. All you have to do is order a DNA testing kit and send it in to be processed. There is a discount rate for project members. FamilytreeDNA will let you know if your tests match with any other members. The Wages project will keep track of members and possible matches. If you have any questions, there is a FAQ page at Familytreedna.com. You can join the Wages project by following this link: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=X18222&special=True

    3. Welcome! I am Manaia, the list administrator for Rootsweb's WAGES mailing list. You can contact me personally at <WAGES-admin@rootsweb.com>. This list is for the discussion of Wages genealogy, history and research. I give a wide latitude to list discussion because I believe that the list is here as a research tool for you, the subscriber. However there some things that should not be posted to the list: 1. Remember that all messages to the list are archived by Rootsweb and can be seen by *anyone* at any time by clicking on the Archives link on the Rootsweb home page. Keep that in mind and look your message over carefully before clicking on "Send". If you wouldn't want your mom, spouse, best friend, or clergyperson reading what you wrote, you probably should send the message privately. 2. E-Mail Forwards that are Virus-warnings, Jokes, Chain Letters, etc., no matter how dire, funny or how worthy the cause. If you think the list needs to hear about it, then please email me personally for my thoughts. 3. Flames or rude emails critizing another subscriber's posting. If someone makes a mistake and it is a problem, I will take care of it. This is a list for including people, not excluding them. We need to all work together to solve our research problems. "Remember to post your lines often! Connections can't be made if we don't post." Again, Welcome and Enjoy! --Manaia [List-Admin WAGES] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wages Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0FVBAEB/181.184.185.187.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Ruth, This post is old but I have comments about Littleton M. Wages so I hope you’re still out there and interested. I found the online reference about his horse stealing. It comes from Agnew”s (Samuel Andrew) Papers. 1847-1902. 43 volumes and ca. 120 items on 14 reels microfilm. The online transcription can be found at http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/a/Agnew,Samuel_Andrew.html Reverend Samuel Agnew’s diary is only transcribes through June 30, 1864. “Lit Wages” is referred to on the diary pages 71, 204 (his horse stealing & the band of others page), 214 ( his arrest page), 215 ( his escape page), 251 ( another horse is missing so Wages are suspected page). Samuel Agnew’s writing does not seem to give too much sympathy to those stealing the horses in this area at this and Samuel Agnew was not a Union sympathizer. Littleton does not appear anywhere after 1865. He and his wife, Mary Caroline, lived in the dwelling next to his father and mother, John G. and Mary E. Wages. I suspect that after Littleton left or died that John G. Wages, Mary Caroline Wages’ father-in-law became a father figure to the young ones such as Bedford Forrest Wages ( 1870 census says he’s 5 yrs. old). These younger children probably considered their grandpa more as a father figure and this may be where all this “other” speculation comes into play. As has already been noted, the Littleton P. Wages living in Missouri is NOT our Littleton M. Wages. Both are in the 1860 census. Littleton M. Wages is listed in the Tippah Co., MS census, which was taken on June 28, 1860. Littleton P. Wages is listed in the Sullivan, MO. 1860 census record, which was taken on August 9, 1860. So our Littleton M. Wages did not run off to Missouri and remarry. I can’t find Mary Caroline Wages after the 1870 census, either. My GGGrandfather was Bedford Forrest Wages. If you know what happened to her please let me know. If you or anyone else has information about the Littleton M. Wages and his wife Mary Caroline Wages please post or contact me at andenola@swbell.net. Thanks Jean A.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0FVBAEB/203.5.2.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks, Jean. My grandfather certainly would have subscribed to this view. He was quite adamant about the Wages name -- and term Black Dutch --- being connected to Europe. As for the Welsh, well, you as you know, there was a very swarthy group of Iberians that predominated throughout the British Isles before the advent of the Celts, the Romans and, eventually, the Anglo-Saxons. All this "darkness" in the Wages clan my be these swarthy characteristics typically attributed to many Welsh people. Take a good look at Catherine Zeta Jones, a Welsh actress who has occasionally played Spanish and Latina roles, and you'll understand why. Incidentally, I've seen pictures of the Wages side of the family, and they're considerably fairer complexioned than the Roberts side. My grandfather Erskine seemed to take after the Roberts side, while Buddy and some of the others looked more like the Wages with pale to dark blue eyes. Regards, Jim Langcuster

I’m still out here and interested in all the tips. Since my original post I’ve found a filter on the ancestry.com home page helps identify the foreign birthplace countries of your surname. When I type in “Wages” the highest distribution of those with this surname were born in Germany. I few in Austria, less in Poland and one in France. Based on this I think the “Black Dutch” is really “Black Deutsche” as you mentioned previously. If you have anymore information let me know. Thanks. Jean Anderson

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0FVBAEB/203.5.2.1 Message Board Post: I'm am the grandson of Erskine Wages, a fine Christian gentleman who spoke frequently of having black Dutch heritage. I always wondered about Indian ancestry in the Wages family, many of whom, including Erskine, tended to have these finely chiseled Latin-type features. My grandfather, however, always insisted that black Dutch reflected a dark-complexioned Dutch ancestry. (Indeed, he spoke often of being a "square-jawed Dutchman.") Some genealogists have argued that Black Dutch should be taken entirely on face value, since Spain once controlled Holland. There indeed are plenty of dark-complexioned Netherlanders whose features reflect the Moorish background of their Spanish forebears. Several other theories, have been posited to explain this term --- one being that it implies German natives of the Black Forest, with Black Deutsch corrupted into Black Dutch. One thing I will stress, though: My grandfather, being from the old school, hotly denied Indian ancestry. He pointed out a time or two that his beloved mother, Molly, was kidded about being a "squaw" by some of the other members of the family, but Indian connection was purely that -- the product of light-hearted kidding. One other point worth making: Roberts is a Welsh name, and the darkness in the family may be attributed to Welsh ancestry. Looking at pictures of the Roberts clan, I'm struck by the Welsh features --- dark, protruding brows, intense eyes, somewhat stocky builds, all of which are associated with the Welsh. Anyway, happened to stumble onto this and thought I'd point it out. Warm regards, Jim Langcuster Auburn, Alabama
