Georgia, I believe Stuart C Wade died in 1901, presumably quite suddenly as he was at work at the NYPL the year before. That may explain why his papers are apparently not as ordered and completed as one would expect from reading his book. What he refers to as Volume 1, which is Chapters 1 to 3 ( I think), was published in a limited edition of 1000 copies, whereas Volume 2 had only 500 copies. This is no doubt attributable to what he describes as the poor response from the Wade community in USA and England at the time of his research, when he complained at the large number of Wade families that both did not reply to his questionnaire and also the large number who ordered the first publication, but then did not pay for it ( whether they got the book without paying is not clear.) As I told Debbie last year when I first mentioned this source to her, I saw both volumes in c1964 at a Wade family residence ( no relation of mine) in Somerset in England. Unfortunately that was before photocopiers were readily available and I had to transcribe the part I was interested in by longhand! All the best, Robert Wade in Brisbane, Australia. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Georgiamhh@aol.com> To: <WADE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2001 5:31 AM Subject: Re: [WADE-L] Stuart C.
