I have found this thread very interesting, especially the information Robert provided on the origin of the coat of arms (seashells, etc.) The only Wade crest I have seen is the one reproduced in Zada Wade Beadles' book "The Wades - The History of a Family." It does not appear to contain any sort of seashells: It is a shield, with a knight's armoured helmet above, some leaves or foliage around the shield, and a dove at the top, with what may be meant to be an olive branch in its mouth. Below is the motto "Vincit qui pattitur" ( possibly "he wins who perseveres"?) . Anyone else seen this one? According to the author, it is to be found on page 570 of James Fairbain's "Crests of the Families of Great Britain and Ireland," published in Edinburgh in 1860. (A copy is for sale on abebooks for US $260, if anyone is interested!) Nancy Wade Wilson
