    1. [WADE] Re: James Wade's wife/wives
    2. To the whole list- the following is a conversation that has been going on between Charlie, myself and others regarding the two James Wades of Cumberland/Barren County, Kentucky. Hopefully, this will help to straighten out the mess. The first part is what Charlie sent me. "Carolyn, Dorothy Wade of Glasgow, a descendant of Elizabeth Wade, Augustine's sister, has provided me with the following: James Wade married Jane Henry King on 6 Mary 1803 in Campbell Co VA. Dorothy lists all of James' children as belonging to Jane. She indicates that Jane died in 1824 in Marrowbone (Cumberland County) KY. Then James moved to Barren County and married Sarah Frances Bailey on 7 Mar 1829 there. According to Dorothy, Sarah was born14 Jun 1780 in VA, a daughter of Callum Bailey. I has emailed Dorothy and to ask how the Wade - Bailey marriage is documented. Now, I have also recently heard from Vicki Huffman, who seems to think that our James was not the James that married Jane King. It is becoming more and more confusing." My response: Charlie, Our James' was NOT the one who married either of those women. There is a book at the Santa Monica Family History Library all about Callum Bailey's family. It states the age for the other James (I have a copy of his will). It points out the big age difference and also mentions the previous marriage to Jane King. Like I said in my letter to Judy the professional researcher hired by my father said to "rule out all others before finding your own." The "other" James is ruled out by this researcher back in 1989 (his name is William Thomas). I was mistaken when I said who was mentioned in the "other" James' will. The Feilding Wade I mentioned was actually a son of Obadiah Wade. His will was sent to us because we thought he may have been James' father. It turned out that he was neither of the two James' father. Briefly, the "other" James' (actually the name in will is James S. Wade) will was written June 3, 1854. He names his wife Sally M. Wade, children David Wade, William E. Wade, James S. Wade, Mary F. Lain, Elizabeth V. Larance. The will was proved in July 1854 (Barren Co.) This James' widow, Sally, is living in Metcalfe County, with 5 children that I believe (if my memory is correct) were hers from her first marriage. Although they are listed with the last name of Wade, which is in error. I don't remember what her first husband's name was, but in James' will he specifically left her enough to care for "her children" without naming them. When he mentioned his children he specifically said "my children" so I assume they both came to this marriage with their own children. Our James is still very much alive in 1860 which is obvious from his will and the fact that he shows up in the census. Trust me these two James have been a problem for all sorts of people. This is not the first time that someone has confused them. Hopefully with the will you have for "our James" and the one I have for "the other" James we can finally get people to realize who belongs to whom. One way to distinguish them is that the "other" James used his middle initial "S" occassionally. The researcher did mention that these two may have been cousins, but I'm not even going to try to figure that part out. I'm pretty sure this researcher is right when he states that our James was the one born abt 1787 (vs 1778 for the "other" James). By the way he (the researcher) calls him "the other" throughout his letter. Further proof is the 1820 Cumberland County census which lists Pearce, Ballenger, and our James. In 1830 bothPearce and Ballenger are dead, but our James is listed as being 40-50 (BD 1780-1790). His wife is the same age. His son Augustine is listed liing close by. The first time both James' appear is in 1840. This census actually used the middle initial "S" for the other James. Our James is 50-60 as is his wife, while the other James is 60-70 and his wife is only 20-30. This correlates with the age of Callum Bailey's daughter Sarah (Sally). I noted that you also gave a witness to our James' will as Jabez Williams. This happens to be my Nancy Williams (also mentioned in will), brother-in-law. I will forward all this to the Wade list and hope that people take note of all the records regarding the two James'. If Dorothy Wade is related to Augustine's sister Elizabeth as you stated then she is follwoing the wrong James. The "other" James lists HIS daughter Elizabeth by her married name of Elizabeth Larrance. Of course we still have no idea what Sally's (ours) maiden name was, but at least we know which line is ours. One thing at a time. Hope this helps, Carolyn "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. " Walt Disney
