I have been researching the James Wade (b. 7 Jul 1786, d. 18 Oct 1864) of Barren County KY who was the father of 9, including Augustine Wade, my ancestor. There is some question about whether the Sally named in James Wade's will as his wife was also the mother of his children. I contend that she was not. To demonstrate this, I offer the following facts. Please bear with me until the end; it is sort of complicated. According to Vickie Connor <[email protected]>, in a message she posted on GenForum at <http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Lane::chapman::3873.html> an d then verified in email this morning, the following notes were taken from the journal of Andrew Chapman which has been handed down through his family. Vickie has seen the journal and make photocopies of parts of it. "Mary Chapman daughter of John & Elizabeth Chapman was born June 7 1783." "On the 3rd day of August 1800 Robert Lane & Mary Chapman was married by the Reverend Mark Withers." "Elizabeth Lane daughter of Robert & Mary Lane was born January the 24th 1801." "John Lane son of Robert & Mary Lane was born August the 11th 1802." Thus we have Robert Lane marrying Mary Chapman (aka Polly) in 1800 and they had at least two children. There is ample evidence that they had several more children, but we will not dwell on them. Mary (Polly) Chapman Lane (Lain, Layne) died about 1814 in Barren County KY. According to Barren County marriage records, Robert Lane married Sally F. Bailey in Barren County on 11 Nov 1815. Several sources indicate that Robert and Sally had three children: Jesse, Polly, and William T. Lane. Then Robert Lane died (20 Nov 1827 according to one unverified source). According to the Barren County marriage records, Sally Lain married James Wade in Barren County on 8 Mar 1829. It seems reasonable to assume that this Sally Lain was the widow of Robert Lane, and was thus Sally F. Bailey. The 1830 Barren County census lists one James Wade. He is 40-50 years old as is his wife. Also listed are 12 others including 1 male (age 5-10), 1 male (age 10-15), 1 male (20-30), 2 females (5-10), 3 females (10-15), 3 females (15-20), and 1 female (20-30). I content that this is my James, and that these others were a combination of his offspring and of Sally's through Robert Lane. It's possible that there could also have been one of Mary Chapman Lane's children in the bunch. Now the confusion comes in because there are two James Wades in the 1840 and 1850 censuses in Barren County, and in 1850 both are married to a Sally. The 1850 Barren census book shows in district 2: 964/982 Wade, James - 72 m - farmer - born VA Wade, Sally - 48 f - born VA Wade, James S. - 19 m - farmer - born VA Wade, Elizabeth - 16 f - VA 967/985 Lane, William T. - 32 m - farmer - born KY Lane, Mary F. - 25 f - born VA Lane, David W. - 9 m - born KY Lane, Sarah A. - 4 f - born KY Lane, Mary - 1 f - born KY 971/989 Wade, James - 63 m - farmer - born VA Wade, Sally - 65 f - born VA Wade, James - 17 m - born IN Mary F. Lane is a daughter of the first James Wade above. I contend that William T. Lane is the son of Robert and Sally (Bailey) Lane. The James Wade, age 17, in household 971/989 is a grandson, and is the son of Augustine Wade who lived nearby. The James, age 63, in 971/989 is my ancestor, the father of Augustine Wade. Now remember that the 1830 census had James Wade and his wife both age 40-50, so in 1850 they would both be 60-70. It's pretty obvious which of the two James and Sally Wades listed above fit this pattern. Now the 1860 Metcalfe census book shows on census page 133, household 908: Lane, William - 43 m - farmer - born KY Lane, Mary F. - 37 f - born KY Lane, Sarah Ann - 15 f - born KY Lane, Mary E. - 11 f - born KY Wade, Sally Ann - 53 f - born VA Even though the facts are a bit off, I feel reasonably certain that this is the same William Lane family, and that this is Sally Wade, widow of James, and mother of Mary F. Lane. On census page 135 in household 924 is Wade, James - 73 m - retired farmer - born VA Wade, Sally F. - 74 f - born VA Holliway, Delia - 40 f - born KY Again, I believe that this is my ancestor. I'm not sure at this time who Delia is. Move on to the 1870 Metcalfe census in the Sartin precinct in household 37/36... Lane, Wm T. - 54 m - farmer - born KY Lane, Mary F. - 48 f - born VA Gee, Lemuel W. - 25 m - born KY Gee, Mary E. - 21 f - born KY Wade, Sarah F. - 84 f - born VA Wade, Sarah A. - 74 f - born VA Shipley, Marion - 17 m - farm laborer - born KY Now both Sallys are living with the Lanes. Sarah A. is Mary's mother; Sarah F. is William's mother. Again, Sarah A. Wade's age seems off, but Sarah F. Wade's age is about right for her to be my James' widow. In both the 1860 and 1870 census, my James' wife is named Sally F. In the 1860 census Sally Ann is living with William Lane. In 1870 she is named Sally A. It seems logical that this is the widow of the other James Wade. In conclusion, I believe that my James Wade married someone, had nine children by her, she died, and he married Sally F. Bailey who was Robert Lane's widow. Comments, corrections, and questions are welcome. Charlie
