    1. [WADE] Possible Ancestors of WADEs of Cass Co., GA
    2. Theron Smith
    3. In 1850 Cass Co., GA (renamed to Bartow Co. in 1862) the following 6 families in which one parent is a WADE are found living very close together. page 102 35-35 George Washington TUMLIN, well known Missionary Baptist preacher, whose wife, Rachel WADE TUMLIN (b. 1815, SC); d. 18 June 1850 just before the 1850 census was taken.) Henry Jackson WADE (prob. b. 29 Dec 1830, GA) with wife, Mary Cannon SPENCE WADE (they were married 2 May 1850) (living in household of G. W. TUMLIN, his brother-in-law.) page 104 71-71 Jeremiah ISBELL with wife Matilda Ann WADE ISBELL (b.1826/7,GA) page 105 81-81 Charles RANDALL with wife Sarah "Sally" WADE RANDALL (b. 27 Jab 1819,SC) page 105 84-84 James Madison WADE (b. 1816/17,SC) with wife Amanda. [James M. WADE is the ancestor of primary interest to the current compiler.] page 105 85-85 Benjamin L.WADE (b. 1821/2, SC with wife Elizabeth. [Benjamin's oldest child was named Henry J.] In the absence of family Bibles, old letters, wills, or deeds, finding households close together in a neighborhood with the same last name is probably the next best evidence. So the probability of the 6 Wades listed above being siblings is fairly high unless there is evidence to the contrary. Note that James Madison and Benjamin were just 3 household removed from Sally WADE and Charles RANDALL in the 1850 census. Family traditions have placed Rachel, Henry Jackson, Matilda Ann, and Sarah as siblings. A helpful first step was to analyze census records in the 1830 census to attempt to find the most likely parents of the 6 Wades above. Consider the following: (1) The Tumlins are known to have come to Cass Co. from Gwinnett Co., GA. George W. Tumlin m. Rachel WADE 3 Oct 1834, just 4 years after the 1830 census. (2) George's father, ostensibly William Tumlin, was in the 1830 census of Gwinnett Co. as was also the case with Henry Wade (02110001-102001.) Henry Wade was on p. 311 of the census; Emeriah or Imri Tumlin, brother of George was on p, 312 of the same census. So we have George Tumlin's family very close to Henry Wade in the 1830 Gwinnett census! (3) Five of the six Wades living close together in the 1850 Cass Co. census can comfortably be matched with persons in Henry Wade' 1830 Gwinnett Co., census (02110001-102001): male 1770-1780: Henry Wade female 1790-1800: Henry's wife female 1815-20: Rachel, b. abt. 1815, pres. SC, m. George Washington Tumlin male 1815-20: James Madison, b. 1816/7, SC m. Amanda female 1815-20: Sarah "Sally" b. 27 Jan 1819 SC, m. Charles Randall male 1820-25: Benjamin L., b. 1821/2, SC m. Elizabeth female 1825-30: Matilda Ann b. 1826/7, GA, m. Jeremiah Isbell [Note that Henry Jackson Wade prob. b. Dec 1830 - after the census!] [Note other male 1820-25: could be William M. WADE who m. Rebecca L. Tomlin, another possible sibling, not in Cass Co., 1850] Several of these families later moved to nearby Floyd Co., and Polk Co., GA. Does any of this dovetail with anyone else's research? I'd love comments either positive or negative, Best regards, Theron Smith.
