Sarah Wade, daughter of Robert Wade, Jr. of Halifax Co., VA was my ggg-grandmother. There are numerous family trees on the Internet and the voluminous "Wade Notes" in Debra L. Koop's web site that state she married her uncle, William Wade. (Bond posted 26 Jun 1772) THIS IS FALSE. Sarah Wade married her first cousin, William Wade, son of her father's brother, Hampton Wade. The proof of this is contained in Halifax Co., VA Deed Book 13, page 453. This is given in Marian Chiarito's book, page 53 as follows: "Nov 22, 1785 from John Baird of the County of Prince George, to George Carrington of H, for 1758 pounds, about 1758 acres on the south side of Dan Riven in H, and bounded by John Armstrong, William Stokes, Colleys line, the Plumb Tree Branch, the road from Boyds Ferry to Andrews' foard, Rodger Atkinson, John Boyd Sr, and subject to the dower of Jeane Perrin, late the widow of Hampton Wade decd, & Sarah Wade, the widow of William Wade, decd, being lands formerly held by the late Hampton Wade, & Sarah Wade, the widow of William Wade decd, being lands formerly held by the late Hampton Wade decd, which descended to William Wade as his eldest son and heir at law, and by sd William Wade conveyed to sd John Baird by H deed dated Feb 16, 1779, and is the land whereon sd Hampton Wade formerly lived. . . " On 20 May 1766, Hampton Wade, for money he owed John Baird & Co., placed his large estate, houses, cattle, etc. up for security. Shortly after this Hampton Wade died intestate. His eldest son, William, inherited his father's estate and his debt. Hampton's widow, Jane Ellis Wade, who later married Samuel Perrin before 10 Sep 1772, retained her dower in her deceased husband's estate. For years after Hampton's death John Baird tried to sell or rent Hampton's estate. The VA Gazette has several ads showing this. In 1772, Hampton's son William, married Sarah Wade and the only Sarah around of marriageable age was Robert Wade, Jr.'s daughter. William died before 16 May 1782 and when this occurred, Sarah obtained dower rights to the same piece of property, which still hadn't been sold. On 22 Nov 1785, John Baird finally sold it to George Carrington, but the two widows still retained their dower rights. Sarah Wade went on to marry James Baird in Halifax in 1789. They remained there until 1805 when they moved to some still unknown location. The family started showing up in Bedford Co., TN in 1810. Sarah's son with William, Edward Wade, was the Register of Bedford Co. for a number of years and ended up dying a pauper. I believe Sarah's 2nd husband, James Baird, may have died in Bedford Co., TN around 1819. Shortly after this the family showed up in Perry Co., Dallas Co., and finally Jefferson Co., AL. Sarah died after 12 Dec 1826 and is probably buried in the Baird-Tatum Cemetery in Pinson, AL in an unmarked grave. Bruce Baird
