    1. [WACOWLIT-L] George M. CANNON, 1878-1907
    2. Brad Aumick
    3. Hello, My great grandfather was George M. CANNON, b. 1878 Nevada or California. George married Nora Ann COLE in 1900 in Kalama, Cowlitz Co. WA. He was drowned in the Coweeman River, near Kelso, on 15 Apr. 1907. >From The Kelsonian, Wednesday, April 17, 1907: Drowned in the Coweeman While working on the logs about five miles above Kelso Monday afternoon, George Cannon, for several years a resident of Kelso, was drowned. Foreman Elmer Evans, who was working with him, says that he had his back turned for a short time when he heard a splash, and turning around saw Cannon disappear under the surface. He never came up, so it is presumed he became frightened and started to swallow water. His body was recovered about two hours later and brought to town. Cannon was a well known character about town, and leaves several brothers and sisters, besides a wife and two children, the latter having been separated from him for a year or more. Undertaker Stoves prepared the body for burial, which was laid to rest in the I. O. O. F. cemetary today. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This obituary is one of the very few records that I have of George. I'd like to hear from anyone who has any connection here, or who knows anything about this CANNON family. Thank you, Brad Aumick aumick@gte.net

    1. Re: [WACOWLIT-L] List Update
    2. Hi list I am seeking info about my maternal grandmother, Katherine J. (probably Jean) LINDSAY in Kelso, WA. My mother was Pansy (Pat) Ruth WILSON. She was born to John William WILSON and Katherine J. LINDSAY in Cannonball/Galen, ND in about 1912/1913 She married James Lynn WALTERS in Vancouver, WA in 1928/29. He went by the name of Lynn WALTERS, and was born in Canada in 1908. They both attended Kelso High School (1924/1928?). Lynn was a track star there, and won many ribbons for hurdle jumping. He worked at the local Safeway store. Lynn attended the 50th reunion of Kelso grads. My grandfather John and uncle Frank WILSON (He had very red, curly hair) had a local band during my mother's teen age years. I don't know if he went to Kelso High. Katherine died (1915?) when my mother was 3 years old. I am trying to find out where she died. My mother was sent to her maternal grandparents (LINDSAY) (don't know where they were located, or first names or maiden name), until she was 8 years old when she came back to her father by train. I don't know if she came back to Kelso, or when the family came to Kelso later. Jeannie :) Publisher of The Jericho Wall Genealogy Newsletter.

    3. Hi... Guess maybe I'll start the ball rolling by introducing myself. :) I'm a native of Cowlitz County, and 5th generation to live here. I was raised at Carrolls, as was my mom. She lived on the Columbia at Carrolls on a houseboat. Grandpa was a commercial fisherman there. My great-great-uncle and his mom (my gggrandmother) ran the hotel on the Carrolls waterfront until it burned in the '20s or 30's (I'd have to ask Mom again for the date). They had been there since about the turn of the century. This was when Kelso was a wide spot, Longview hadn't been conceived, and Carrolls was the main stop on the Columbia between Astoria and Portland. Grandma was born and raised at Rockford, a small community in Spokane County south of the city sharing that name. She and her brother came to Carrolls in 1916 when she was 16, traveling by train. (They ran away from home.) Grandpa helped build the Carrolls Store (formerly Carrolls Mercantile). My kin are buried at Rose Valley and Mt. Solo cemeteries. If anyone has questions particulary about Carrolls or Rose Valley (formerly Shanghai), I can probably get 1st-hand answers for you from Mom and friends. shirley :) John Blair wrote: > > Greetings again to our new list members! 1. [WACOWLIT-L] Brown, Moyer
    2. Nancy Christie
    3. My great-grandfather was Wiley (or Wylie) Bradford BROWN. He was born 14 April 1849 in Illinois. His father was John Sidney BROWN, born 16 August 1820 in Cooperstown, New York; his mother was Wilhelmina Louisa WYLIE, daughter of Daniel WYLIE and Elizabeth JERVIS. They married about 1846. Wiley Brown died about 23 July 1913 in Lexington (Cowlitz County), Washington. He lived in Wisconsin, Kansas, and Iowa before moving to the Auburn, Washington area and then to Cowlitz County. His marriage license gave his occupation as "artist." His obituary described him as a "prosperous farmer." He was a fine artist and a number of his paintings are in the hands of his granddaughters--my mother and her cousin. Wiley Bradford Brown is buried in what used to be the IOOF Cemetery in Kelso; now it is Cowlitz View Gardens. I visited the cemetery last fall and located the gravesite using the cemetery records, but there is no headstone. Wiley had a brother named Francis Marion Brown who owned a candy store in Kelso called "Palace of Sweets." They had three sisters: Lillian Elizabeth (Lilly), Marietta Eliza (Etta), and Julietta. Wiley Bradford Brown married Anna Mary MOYER 03 November 1885 in Tama, Iowa. Her parents were Francis Xerxes MOYER and Marianna RINDLE, both born in Bavaria, Germany. They traveled from Iowa to Washington in a covered wagon. Anna Mary Moyer was one of 12 children in a Catholic family. She renounced her religious to marry Wiley Bradford Brown, and her parents subsequently renounced her. However, her siblings stayed in touch and several of them followed the couple to the Northwest a few years later. Nancy Christie Portland, Oregon mailto:christie@bmb.ogi.edu

    3. My Cowlitz Co. ancestor is Timothy Fletcher Hersey, b 1827 in ME, died 1905 in Cowlitz Co WA. He married my gg grandfather's sister, Eliza Rachel Johnson, in 1852 in Jo Daviess Co. IL. He was quite an interesting fellow. He founded Abiline KS, was an Indian trader, and surveyed a cattle trail from Abiline to Wichita KS, among other things. He came to Castle Rock about 1901. A couple of years ago we spent time in Castle Rock trying to track down his burial place but were unsuccessful. Anyone else have this man in their ancestry, or can give me some clues about where I might find more information?
