    1. [WACOWLIT-L] Hersey/Cowlitz Co.
    2. DC & Alice Allen
    3. Thanks for the reminder, John. My one and only Cowlitz Co. surname belongs to Timothy Fletcher Hersey, who was well known in KS as the founder of Abiline, a cattleman, trail builder, Indian scout, and from what I've heard, quite a character. He died in Castle Rock in the early 1900's (about 1905, I think). Tried a couple of years ago to find his grave but no luck. His wife was Eliza Rachel Johnson, my 3 gg grandfather's youngest sister. I would like to know where he is buried, if a record exists for that, and also to try to pinpoint when he arrived in Cowlitz Co. 2. My name is Kimberly Brown and I am searching for ancestors in Switzerland and Nebraska, but I wanted to help others. It made more sense for me to try to help those searching in the areas that I have access to. I am willing as my time allows (I do work full time and have two children) to do look ups for people in the Woodland area, i.e., cemetery, library etc. Kimberly Brown searching for: ZUMSTEIN, MERZ, RIPP, GRANGER, HUMPHREY, KERWOOD

    3. Sharon, Was hoping someone else would answer your query.....since it has been 20 years since I've been in Ryderwood....but it is a very out of the way place but in more recent years has been a town settled by retired folks. It is on a one way road, that is the road doesn't go anywhere but dead ends in Ryderwood........used to have an old store in it with a real old time feel to it, but like I said it has been over 20 years since I've been there, and another thing you have go through Vader to get there, so you have to go through Lewis Co to get there and then you're in Cowlitz Co. but can't get to the rest of Cowlitz Co without going all the way back.....I'm going to post your query on the Lewis Co. page since more people that live in Vader could tell you lot! 1. [WACOWLIT-L] BAGGE, Erland Robert
    2. Nancy Christie
    3. Here is one of my Cowlitz County stories: My grandfather Erland Robert (Bob) BAGGE was born in 1882 or 1888 (records conflict) in Sweden and died 18 December 1938 in Kelso, Washington. He was the only son born to his parents; they had 5 daughters but only 1 daughter lived to adulthood. After his mother died, his father remarried and Erland did not get along with his stepmother. When a favorite sister died at age 16, Robert left Sweden for the U.S. and never returned. I have never learned why he ended up in Washington State. In Kelso he worked for the Post Office, and hoped to become a writer although as far as I know he never published anything. He wrote a lengthy semi-fictionalized story (in perfect English) describing his courtship of my grandmother, Katherine (Kit) Brown (parents Wylie Bradford BROWN and Anna Mary MOYER), who was raised in the Lexington-Castle Rock area. This courtship took place mostly by mail; they were introduced (by mail) via a "Miss Lonely Hearts" newspaper columnist. Both had written to the columnist, asking for help in finding a spouse. Two years ago I learned that his parents' families (father Patrick Heinrich BAGGE and mother Hedvig Charlotta HJARNE) were prominent in Sweden and can be documented 8 generations back beyond my grandfather. Swedish encyclopedias contain articles about individuals from both sides of his family, and upon discovering a distant cousin in Sweden, he told me that he had to study our ancestors in school. 3. At last year's Family History Fair sponsored by the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, Inc., I met the people staffing the Cowlitz County Genealogical Society's booth, and with their help I found where my great-grandfather was buried in Kelso, Washington. They had a book right at the booth with indexed cemetery listings. Here is the information about the 1999 Family History Fair, "Preserving our Heritage." For those who can't see this web page below, it is Saturday, June 19, 1999, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Portland State University, Smith Memorial Center building, 3rd floor Ballroom, 1825 SW Broadway, Portland, Oregon. Workshops throughout the day, lots of society displays and vendors. http://www.gfo.org/faire.htm Nancy Christie Portland, Oregon mailto:christie@bmb.ogi.edu
