I live in Burbank in south eastern Washington. Saturday morning my husband and I got up and ran over to Kent for the day. We found this cemetery thanks to the great directions I was given on the Washington-L@RootsWeb.com mailing list. It is between a driving range and the Valley freeway. It isn't marked from the road, but it's there! There are many graves both visible and others found under all the brush and bramble. I didn't have time to do a transcription of it, but one will be done. I have contacted the Boy Scout Troop that was involved with this cemetery in 1991 to see if their Eagle Scout, that worked on the cemetery as a project, transcribed it then. I cannot believe that a community the size of Kent would let such an historic site deteriorate to such an extent! I was appalled. I have been to many old burial plots, but for the location and all the other factors, this is the worse! There are IDDINGS, STEPHENSON, CHADWICK, ANDERSON, MONSTER, just to name a few. It was used from 1873-1949. I have an email of a gentleman and his wife who had just "found" the cemetery. They live a half mile up the hill from the cemetery. They plan on getting involved in the clean up and restoration of it. With his permission I will give out his email addy, but I have to ask him first. He has been doing genealogy for a couple of years. Now for my question. Found my hubby's great great grandmother's grave there (Mary [Sheckler] Anderson). She was born Dec 14, 1825. "Promoted Aug 23, 1905" and at the bottom of the stone it says "The Salvation Army Seattle Corps No 1". I have never ran across a Salvation Army stone. Does this mean that 1) She was a member of the Salvation Army Church, 2) That the Salvation Army just provided the stone, or 3) Why is it on her headstone? Needless to say, when we got home last night, I wrote the Salvation Army, and found a contact for the Boy Scout who did his Eagle project in 1991. I find this fascinating in that Iddings is a major gravel/soil/bark retailer here in Covington. I wonder if they know their ancestors are buried down there? I think one of the Iddings is also the mayor of Maple Valley if I'm not mistaken? Mary Joe & Laura Schmidt wrote: > I live in Burbank in south eastern Washington. The Saar Pioneer Cemetery in Kent was transcribed and is included in Volume I of Memorial Records of South King County, WA, printed in 1981 and still available from the South King County Genealogical Society. Barbara
