    3. I find this fascinating in that Iddings is a major gravel/soil/bark retailer here in Covington. I wonder if they know their ancestors are buried down there? I think one of the Iddings is also the mayor of Maple Valley if I'm not mistaken? Mary Joe & Laura Schmidt wrote: > I live in Burbank in south eastern Washington. 3. I live in Burbank in south eastern Washington. Saturday morning my husband and I got up and ran over to Kent for the day. We found this cemetery thanks to the great directions I was given on the Washington-L@RootsWeb.com mailing list. It is between a driving range and the Valley freeway. It isn't marked from the road, but it's there! There are many graves both visible and others found under all the brush and bramble. I didn't have time to do a transcription of it, but one will be done. I have contacted the Boy Scout Troop that was involved with this cemetery in 1991 to see if their Eagle Scout, that worked on the cemetery as a project, transcribed it then. I cannot believe that a community the size of Kent would let such an historic site deteriorate to such an extent! I was appalled. I have been to many old burial plots, but for the location and all the other factors, this is the worse! There are IDDINGS, STEPHENSON, CHADWICK, ANDERSON, MONSTER, just to name a few. It was used from 1873-1949. I have an email of a gentleman and his wife who had just "found" the cemetery. They live a half mile up the hill from the cemetery. They plan on getting involved in the clean up and restoration of it. With his permission I will give out his email addy, but I have to ask him first. He has been doing genealogy for a couple of years. Now for my question. Found my hubby's great great grandmother's grave there (Mary [Sheckler] Anderson). She was born Dec 14, 1825. "Promoted Aug 23, 1905" and at the bottom of the stone it says "The Salvation Army Seattle Corps No 1". I have never ran across a Salvation Army stone. Does this mean that 1) She was a member of the Salvation Army Church, 2) That the Salvation Army just provided the stone, or 3) Why is it on her headstone? Needless to say, when we got home last night, I wrote the Salvation Army, and found a contact for the Boy Scout who did his Eagle project in 1991. 3. Yes and no. Lorraine uses local history and local resources and their primary evidences to illustrate research techniques and strategies that can be used in any locale. She also explains how you can use these primary evidences to draw interpretations. I am sure you would enjoy the class because you will have ready access to an expert that can direct you to specific sources. Lorraine has 20+ years experience as a historian for the Museum of History and Industry. -Char -----Original Message----- From: AtkinsM@aol.com <AtkinsM@aol.com> To: WA-SKGS-L@rootsweb.com <WA-SKGS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, January 26, 2000 8:43 PM Subject: Re: [WASKCGS-L] Nearby History Class >Is this a class on local history?

    3. Our friend Glen Carter passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2000. A service will be held on Saturday January 29th at 2 pm, at the First Baptist Church of Kent, 11420 S.E. 248th Street. Cake and Coffee to follow the service. No Visitation. It was because of Glen, that S.K.C.G.S. has the wonderful meeting place at the First Baptist Church. Betty Cooper

    3. Thankyou for letting us know of this class. This class is certainly worth the time! The price is right - FREE. The instructor , Lorraine McConaghy, is excellent in knowledge AND presentation. The principles work whether your research project is literally nearby or elsewhere in the country. The class is held at 2 different locations - Bellevue Regional Library 10AM - noon then repeated at the Federal Way Regional Library 2PM - 4PM every other Saturday. The next class (2nd of 8) will be held Feb. 5. I am so glad I decided to go and can hardly wait for Feb. 5 to roll around. Anyone is welcome to attend any or all of the class sessions. Char Kibbie

    2. Is this a class on local history? I am interested in that. In particular, I am looking for old aerial photographs of the Puget Sound region for comparison to today. I've seen a few and it is really interesting to me to see the drastic changes made over the past 50 years. Looking forward to this class. Mike

    3. Betty, I didn't realize the papers were no longer being microfilmed. For several years I have cut out the obits every day, thinking at some point I'll make an index for each year. So if anyone wants a photocopy of the original from the last couple years, I can make one. Barbara
