    1. [WASKCGS-L] Organizing Family History Research, Documents, Photos & Memorabilia
    2. Charlotte Kibbie
    3. Hi Shirley, (and others)- I am in the process of finally physically organizing all my family history collection(30+ years worth). I know where things are but no one else would be able to retrieve specific items. Over the years I have lost items that I have loaned and never had returned. Now I am much more careful, even with things that are replacable. I have my system for research and documents for my mother's traditional side of the family but am still looking for a better way to organize patronymic records, photos and memorabilia. I am weeding through my hard copy file and "discarding" (they're still in my database and backups) the generations of peripheral lines that have not tied in. I am not buying more file cabinets just to hold stuff I do not use. I want the family history to be a blessing and not a curse that will cause frustration and discouragement and get tossed when I go. This is a project I have thought about for a long time (yes, years!) but just started earlier this month, Oct. 2000, devoting 30-60 min. each day to working on it. And all that shows is a little dent. The sign in my work area still applies - "Please don't mess with my mess". Yes, I'd be interested in this group/ or discussion. -Char Kibbie -----Original Message----- From: SATMM@aol.com <SATMM@aol.com> To: WA-SKGS-L@rootsweb.com <WA-SKGS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, October 16, 2000 11:53 AM Subject: Re: [WASKCGS-L] SKCGS Interest Groups >Hi Phyllis, This is a subject I'd like to hear addressed. 2. Hi Phyllis, This is a subject I'd like to hear addressed. I am first generation American and the genealogist for the entire family. We know who every individual is and where they are located. I am returning to (what's now Romania) to gather more documents and memorabilia from the church, my living aunt, and our peoples homes whose house numbers are on the church records and are still standing, frozen in time. I now have many boxes of documents, photos, emails, memorabilia including important historical artifacts. A piece of tile from the roof of my gr. grandfathers church in Frauendorf Transylvania; an official military booklet documenting my uncles route locations through W.W.I in the German Army as they fought the Russian Army and similar items. I am now being invited to yearly family reunions and picnics in Montana and Oregon. I feel like I have a mini museum which could be a traveling event when I go. It's a huge cataloging job which I am willing to do. At his point, I'm focusing on the hundreds of photos, recent and vintage. Of course many family members want copies. I think I should be keeping a log of everything I do because various family members begin emailing me with additional information about a specific person (usually dead) and I'm pulled from one person to another and forget who or what I was working on before. I would like to hear an ongoing discussion about practical ways of organizing a huge collection of things and information (and misinformation). I can't believe I'm the only genealogist that gets overwhelmed with how to organize an out of control project. Thanks for any consideration of this dilemma. Shirley Taylor

    1. [WASKCGS-L] New Interface at FamilySearch Site
    2. Charlotte Kibbie
    3. NEW INTERFACE AT FAMILYSEARCH SITE ============================================================ At the Federation of Genealogical Societies' (FGS) annual conference in September, Richard E. Turley, Jr., managing director of the Family and Church History Department of the LDS Church, delivered the opening keynote speech entitled "The Family History Library: Its Past, Present, and Future in Identifying and Linking the World Family." During the speech, attendees were given a preview of FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service, Release 2.0. Visitors to the FamilySearch site since last Thursday will have noticed that this new release is already in place. The site is divided into four sections--Home, Search, Share, and Library. Each section can be accessed easily by clicking on the corresponding tabs that are available for the most part throughout the site at the top of the page, making navigation quick and easy. The Home tab provides access to News, FAQs, and Ordering/Downloading products, as well as links to information about the LDS Church and a how-to section for beginners. In the Search tab, you'll be able to perform searches of the online data available from the site, get help from online research guides, search a directory of Web sites (or browse by category), and search the Family History Library Catalog (current as of April 2000). The Share tab is for registered users and contains links to e-mail collaboration lists and "Share My Genealogy"; it also allows visitors to submit their Web sites to FamilySearch. The Library tab is home to the newest section of the site and provides information about the Family History Library, its branch Family History Centers, and the Family History Library Catalog, as well as an education section that contains links to genealogical conferences, institutes, and home-study courses. Information is available for those planning on visiting the facilities, so that they can get the most from their visit. For more information, visit the site at: http://familysearch.org

    1. [WASKCGS-L] SKCGS Interest Groups
    2. Phyllis Haynen
    3. I've compiled the results for the SKCGS Member Survey. Question #9 Is there a Special Interest Group that you would like to see added? Mid-West - 5 responses; British (Include Irish) - 8; Canada - 2; Scottish - 1; Dutch - 1; Scandanavian - 1; New England 1. Question #3 Which states, countries and/or ethnic groups are important to you in your research. It's going to be a long list, but I'm going to type it in. I don't have a map for the specific regions, but I think there is quite a bit of interest in New England and Midwest. Would you like to be a chairperson to one if these interest groups? Contact me. Interest groups have come and gone. Just like the German Interest Group. It has been dissolved because of lack of interest. I did see there is still some research interest for Germany. Maybe we could resurrect this interest group, too. 1. Connecticut, Michigan, Iowa, Montana, New York, California, Pennsylvania. German/English/Dutch/French 2. 2. Phyllis Haynen
    3. Frieda Risvold, SKCGS member, brought this to my attention. Did you notice the absence of Myra Gormley's Family Tree column in the September 23, 2000 issue of the Post-Intelligencer? This is the notice that was in the newspaper. NO FAMILY TREE If you're a fan of Myra Gormley's Family Tree column, please let us hear from you. The column will be on hiatus for a few weeks, and we'd like to gauge reader interest. 1. [WASKCGS-L] Traveling Library
    2. Great News for our Traveling Library! We now have enough volunteers to carry all of our books to and from our monthly meetings. Margaret Shaw, Cathy Wooden and Tom & Janice Hammond will be taking home with them after the next meeting, 2 boxes apiece. That together with the two boxes that Barbara Lansing and the three boxes that Colleen Rockwell are carrying, takes care of all 11 boxes! Mary Kozy had also volunteered even though she is already involved in so many ways. Thanks to each of you for extending yourselves once again! What a great bunch of people! I will be "behind the counter" at our meeting on Oct 21 checking out books as usual - hope to see you there. Don't forget to bring those books you have checked out. Tom Tombarge

    3. Hi Tom: Wish I could volunteer to help you but with my heart problem plus a back problem I think I better not at least for the time being. I'm sorry to hear you've been feeling bad but glad to hear you're doing much better. My trip to Denmark was succesful but I think I got the back problem from flying for 10.5 hrs non-stop from Copenhagen to Seattle in a Tourist seat. See you at the October meeting. Kind regards Walter O. Nielsen PS I depart for San Diego on monday and return sunday following.

    2. Margie
    3. I got this off another list and as it pertains to WA State thought I would post it here--------------------------------------- WASHINGTON STATE BIOS - NEW SITE From: Janine M. Bork <borks@aracnet.com> I am transcribing two 1889 history books called: History of the Pacific Northwest Oregon and Washington Volume I and II. I'm currently up to the E's transcribing the bios, about 1,000 pages in all involving Oregon and Washington people just in the bios alone. I started on Volume II first due to the bios. I don't belong to any Washington lists. If you do, could you forward this to any lists you think might be appropriate. I have the bios at this site: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/or/county/wallowa/1889historybook.htm It is a temporary site while I'm working on the books. I thought I'd do the bios before I start to actually transcribe the books. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Margie

    2. Anna D
    3. I just discovered the book containing the records of deaths from 1881 to 1907 that your wonderful Society helped put together. Found great-great-grandma MAYVILLE there after years of searching for her. Our grandma always told the story that her grandmother died while on a visit from Michigan, but that's all we knew. Now, how can I obtain a copy of the certificate? The acknowledgements state that the records are on microfilm at the State Archives Regional Branch at the Bellevue Community College. Is this the only copy? Was a copy taken by the LDS? Thank you for your help. Anna D.

    2. Phyllis Haynen
    3. Hello SKCGS Members, Some of you received your SKCGS newsletter just in time to fill-out the survey and return it at Saturday's meeting. Thank you very much. I would really appreciate everyone to fill out their survey and mail it to the society. The SKCGS address is on the survey. As a member of the society, your input is very important. This will give us direction on how we should focus our efforts as a society, how we can benefit our members, and encourage other genealogy researchers to join the society. I would like to have the results of the survey ready for the Oct 3rd Board meeting and will share the information at the Oct 21st General Meeting. 3. You probably haven't received your SKCGS Newsletter. Yes, it's unexpectedly very late this month. Please accept my apologies. Attached to the newsletter is an SKCGS Member Survey. If you receive this before the Saturday meeting, please fill it out and bring to the meeting. Otherwise, mail it to the society. I really want your input. This Saturday, Sept 16, 2000, we are having our regular Monthly Society Meeting. We will have the regular social hour and on the agenda for the business portion, we will be voting on our annual budget for the society. Please be there, your vote is important. After, we will go to the Auburn Library for tours of the new library with emphasis on the genealogy collection, as well as demonstrations on how to access genealogy research information on the internet via the library computer system and demonstrations on how to use the computer to access the various research CDs in the collection. Come and see the wonderful new home of our society's library collection. If you know a member that does not have an e-mail address, please tell them about this Saturday's meeting. Thank you and . . .
