    1. [WASKCGS-L] So. King Co. Genealogical Society March 17th meeting
    2. JT Arnold
    3. Hello! The South King County Genealogical Society is proud to have Sally Gene Mahoney speak on Searching Irish records at our next meeting. It's Saint Patrick's Day, and the program is all-Irish as Sally Gene Mahoney explores preliminary and later steps to as much success as is possible in tracing Irish ancestors, provides some useful on-line sites and tips, and covers the main resources available in this country and the Emerald Isle. Having returned last October from a month long trip to Ireland, Sally will also have some on-site research experiences to share. After retiring from a career in journalism, Sally has used the talents of a successful newspaper reporter to learn how to ferret out - and prove the accuracy of - all the facts and details in her family research. She is active in the Seattle Genealogy Society, having served 6 1/2 years as the editor of the society's quarterly "Bulletin", and is the author/compiler of the "Index to Bagley's History of Seattle", a major three-volume, 2,200 page 1915 work. Our celebration of St. Patrick's Day will also include Irish inspired refreshments and door prize drawings. Date: Saturday, March 17th Time: 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. - Social Hour (come browse our Sales Table, checkout our other tables) 10:15 - Noon - Meeting & Program Place: First Baptist Church of Kent 11430 SE 248th Street Kent, Washington Topic: Searching Irish Records - Where Do We Begin? Information: Visit us on the web at http://www.rootsweb.com/~waskcgs If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me. 1. [WASKCGS-L] Parliamentarian
    2. As a follow-up to our discussion at last night's board meeting I offer the following to those present; and any one else interested: My copy of Robert's Rules of Order, 75th Edition; says this about the Parliamentarian: "The parliamentarian should not be an elected officer. The principal duty of the parliamentarian is to advise the president. The president may be the best parliamentarian of the organization. It is absurd and also embarrassing to elect an advisory officer, when that adviser may know less about the subject than the officer he is supposed to advise. If there is to be a parliamentarian, in a local organization, the president should be free to appoint one in whose abilities he has confidence. When state or national organizations need a professional parliamentarian, he may be appointed by the president with the approval of the executive board." It is not even part of the basic Rules but one of the "Practical Points" on the inside back cover. Perhaps more recent version might have a slightly different wording but I think not enough to change the intent. So, we did good last night by handling the matter the way we did. Tom Tombarge

    3. I have just read the most recent Eastman's Newsletter and find that we can now read VAL GREENWOODS Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy on line at the Genealogy Publishing Company's web site at: http://www.genealogical.com. A wonderful opportunity to see this book before you buy your own copy.

    1. [WASKCGS-L] Sorry I wasn't with you all
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Hi, everybody, I'm so sorry I couldn't make it to the GeneaRama. In other years that I've had to miss, it was because I was down in Arizona visiting family, but this year, it was a much sadder reason. My Mom (Lola McBee Cowan) died a couple of weeks ago, on President's Day. She had been very ill for only a week before that time, although her health has been on the skids for some time, and I can't remember the last time she felt well enough to come to a meeting. Her obituary was published in the South County Journal, or you can see it at: -- well, shoot, the Feb. GenConnect posts are still missing, so I guess the So. Co. Journal is the best place to see it, or I can forward a copy to any who are interested. Thanks for the card from the Society; that was a comfort for the family. All the best, Valorie Zimmerman -- *** Please update your Address books! We're leaving aa.net. *** Old address - valoriez@aa.net *** New address - valoriez@zimres.net

    1. [WASKCGS-L] Family Tree Charts
    2. Phyllis Haynen
    3. Long time ago at a SKCGS Computer Interest Group meeting, someone showed us the Family Tree Chart he created in Family Tree Maker. He saved the file on a CD and took it to a local Print shop to be printed. I would like to know the Print shop. I'm preparing our Haynen Descendants Family Tree chart for our 3rd Haynen reunion, May 5th, in California. A couple years ago the tree had grown soooo much, it was 6 feet high and 15? feet wide. I printed the chart on legal size paper and glue sticked the pages together. I rolled it up and put in a Ski Box! This year it will be even bigger!! I'm hoping to take it to a print shop and the print shop can do this from a file from a Zip Disk. Does somebody on the list remember this person? 1. Re: [WASKCGS-L] Privacy Issue
    2. All members do not have phone numbers for all other members. Only board members have this. In order for the general membership to have phone numbers, we would have to start publishing them in the newsletters. I was under the impression that many members were against this as they felt it was an invasion of their privacy and that they did not want to receive unsolicited phone numbers. Just a quick alternative. Maybe we could have a member sign an authorization or something similar to allow inclusion of their phone number and/or email address. That way, only those comfortable with releasing their information would have it done. Perhaps the others could be reached through one board member contact who could relay the info to the appropriate member. Any other ideas? Trish

    3. In a recent SKCGS Newsletter, the National Genealogical Society's Genealogical Standards "Guidelines For Publishing Web Pages on the Internet" was shared. Here is the URL http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/comstandweb.htm There is a bullet "adhere to the NGS “Standards for Sharing Information with Others” regarding copyright, attribution, privacy, and the sharing of sensitive information." This is the URL for "Standards for Sharing Information with Others" http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/comstandsharing.htm I will recommend this at the next Board meeting, March 5th. We will not post any information unless we have some evidence of consent from the SKCGS member and we will only post what the member has agreed to share. This can be their name or e-mail address or home address or telephone #.
