Well I was hoping for more votes, only 22% of the members of the list here voted, but 88% of those that voted said yes it would be great to have an FGS conference here in Spokane and would help. I think that is a pretty small group to do all the work for a National Conference. It was pointed out that even if we want the conference that it is several years off, and there is no one here that has any pull with the selection committee so even if we have a great new convention center the FGS may not pick Spokane. A few years ago Jacque and I went to the NGS conference in Denver, and one morning when we were in line for breakfast with our conference nametags another group came to the line, and asked if we would all like to be at one table, so about 8 of us were seated at a table and were eating and talking about the great convention center at Denver, and that we were glad the NGS had selected Denver. One of the ladies there said she had been on the site selection committee and was glad we liked the site. A couple of the others asked what made a good site for a national conference, and she said they looked for a good convention center, a good local genealogical society, and that they actually preferred a smaller community as the room rates for the hotels was usually more affordable. It should also have a good airport. Someone asked how soon they would come back to the same area again if they liked the facilities and volunteers, and she said they try not to come to the same area again for at least 10 years, so as not to wear out the volunteers. I realize the Convention and Visitors Bureau has a vested interest in bringing conventions here to Spokane, but I think Spokane has the facilities (or will have soon) for a National Conference, and some people that would help so I was thinking we should let them contact the FGS and see if the FGS is interested in coming to Spokane. Does anyone know the person at the FGS to contact about site selection?? Charles
