EWGS Board Members, I will not be able to attend the Board Meeting or Regular meeting. I have to attend a funeral at 10 am followed by a luncheon for the family that I am putting together. I will miss not being there, Ruth Roberts will be putting out the locality pages for me. Lola

Hi guys - By golly, I think that spring is FINALLY here or at least it is for me. I am back among the "standing tall" people and glad that I now have two new knees. Just call me the bionic woman! Anyone know how Wally is doing - he was to get a new knee also. I want to thank all for you for the many cards and even more good wishes. Obviously they helped a great deal. That was nice and definitely boosted my spirits. I thank Shirley for doing a super job in presiding at the March meeting. Now that spring is here, we have many exciting 'irons in the fire', so to speak. I am really looking forward to having Sabine come visit us from Germany (via Salt Lake) for our June meeting. Remember that WILL be our June meeting. Then we have Leslie Collier coming from Texas for the Annual Workshop so it sounds like we have lots of different, educational things to look forward to, plus fun. Marvelene is following through with all the military classes and hard to believe how many different wars there were. That will be good for everyone, I think. Even those of us who say we have been researching forever. For instance what do you know about the Spanish-America War? My father was born in 1898 and was given the middle name of a General while his cousin was luckier while be given the name of a Admiral. That plus Teddy Roosevelt rode up San Juan Hill, so I know that I can learn alot about that time period. See you at the April meeting. Come and bring a friend. Hello: I am in Oregon. During WWII, one of my cousins came out to the state of Washington (from Kansas) to work in the ship yards. I would guess that this would be in Seattle. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I might find her name. Possibly city directory. Her name was Cora Brown. She had lost her husband in Kansas (he was a miner) and after his death came out to Washington. Cora may have been living with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs.Floyd Wilson Her daughter's name was Virginia. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thankyou JoAn Gauer
OK - EWGS members (and non-members). Just a reminder that at the beginning of each general meeting, we have a short auction of books. These books are donated by other members (and non-members) to our society for the purpose of this auction. Monies generated from these auctions go into the General Fund to help in whatever area needed. If you have genealogically related books you no longer need/want, please let me know. I would need to know the Title of the Book, Author, A bit about the book please. Because there must be a time limit for this event, I would let you know in advance that your book(s) would be auctioned at a particular meeting. Then I would ask you to bring the book(s) to the meeting designated and given to either Donna Potter Phillips or me, Ruby Simonson McNeill. That way they wouldn't be lost, or having to be in anyone's home. I hope you will look around at your books and make a decision to donate some for this fun auction. I have personally given several so far and will do so in the future. Soooooooooo - if you want to get in on the fun and go home with a book you don't already have, be sure and come to the meetings. Remember, you don't have to be a member to come to the meetings but I know you would want to actually belong to our Society. We are educational as well as fun!!! Well I was hoping for more votes, only 22% of the members of the list here voted, but 88% of those that voted said yes it would be great to have an FGS conference here in Spokane and would help. I think that is a pretty small group to do all the work for a National Conference. It was pointed out that even if we want the conference that it is several years off, and there is no one here that has any pull with the selection committee so even if we have a great new convention center the FGS may not pick Spokane. A few years ago Jacque and I went to the NGS conference in Denver, and one morning when we were in line for breakfast with our conference nametags another group came to the line, and asked if we would all like to be at one table, so about 8 of us were seated at a table and were eating and talking about the great convention center at Denver, and that we were glad the NGS had selected Denver. One of the ladies there said she had been on the site selection committee and was glad we liked the site. A couple of the others asked what made a good site for a national conference, and she said they looked for a good convention center, a good local genealogical society, and that they actually preferred a smaller community as the room rates for the hotels was usually more affordable. It should also have a good airport. Someone asked how soon they would come back to the same area again if they liked the facilities and volunteers, and she said they try not to come to the same area again for at least 10 years, so as not to wear out the volunteers. I realize the Convention and Visitors Bureau has a vested interest in bringing conventions here to Spokane, but I think Spokane has the facilities (or will have soon) for a National Conference, and some people that would help so I was thinking we should let them contact the FGS and see if the FGS is interested in coming to Spokane. Does anyone know the person at the FGS to contact about site selection?? Charles
Yesterday I was contacted by the Spokane Convention & Visitors Bureau about having a FGS Conference in Spokane. While I know it would be a lot of work, it would also be very rewarding to our members and also the city and surrounding area. I would be interested in an informal poll of those that would be interested in having the FGS Conference here. Send me your answer privately (charles_hansen@prodigy.net), but do comment on the list your feelings if you want to. I will tally the results and post them in a few days to make sure everyone has a chance to vote first. Charles
Sounds interesting, thanks for the info. Frances
