Got a note from Donna to check the EWGS website as it has been updated with all the educational seminars listed. She also wanted to thank everyone for the cookies as they had a bunch left over to freeze for the fall meetings. Charles
They ask if there are any more sites they might add, and I see on the Washington State site they have the WSGS, so how about EWGS in the Spokane list?? OUTSTANDING site. Thanks Charles for sharing. Best part the sources for the sites are available, and the are not all related back to Ancestry!!! I have used a number of the sites, but there are so many more to check out. Mikee - That is a great link. I couldn't believe the amount of links that they have for WV - so it is one that will keep you busy for some time. I put a note about it on my homepage. Thanks a bunch! This is a site that has a lot of links to help your research. If you have a minute, visit: http://www.linkpendium.com/ Charles
Frances, we would have loved to have tables like a classroom also, but don't know if we can do it at the Library. We might work on that for a new idea. Thanks for coming. Bette
The seminar was great - I do prefer sitting at a table and would have found eating easier, but enjoyed the sack lunch idea for a change and needed a "different" chair to sit in for awhile. Agree that we can go to more when they are cheaper - guess we all have that problem at some time or other. Frances
I for one think that the format that we used this seminar is great and we should use it every time that we can. I was very lucky to have Sabine stay with me as I had the opportunity to "pick her brain" and did so whenever the opportunity came up. Sabine wanted me to thank everyone for the warm welcome. We had a great day on Sunday, we went to CDA and as she had never eaten Mexican food we went to Azteca for lunch and then on to the Arts Festival where she found a gift for her little girl. Sabine told me that the "proffessional" and the "hobby" genealogists do not associate (or as she put it get on). As she charges for her services she may not use their Genealogy Library as they are volunteers and don't want her to make a profit on them. They don't want her to join thier association and help with the extraction, indexing etc as she might use the information in her business. It is a situation that they are working on to correct and she will take back the information she has learned from the US to help build better relations. She loves the LDS Library and spends every minute there she can. I think Sabine would appreciate it also, I know I like staying in a private home with someone that knows the area better than a hotel. Lola That is too bad about professional and hobby genealogists not associating, as colaberating is always better. The more information available the better. I do know the State Library is having a problem with some of the Pay for View genealogical sites, as our state law requires the state to provide copies of databases and indexes done by volunteers to these services and then they can charge for access. The state wants them to remain free and open to everyone, so the change the state wants is to require the Pay for View sites to provide a free access url also. Another outstanding event hosted by EWGS! Did you see all those eager faces that came to learn about German research? How many "new faces" did you see? Remember we'd like to see you again for the Sept meeting, and our October Seminar. Keeping the cost down is important, and it was nice seeing that our first try, just might have worked out. It was a great day, and thanks for coming. Shirley Penna-Oakes, EWGS 1st Vice Washington State Firefighter/EMT Rock-n-O Ranch, Tum Tum, WA
I was very pleased to see so many SMART genealogist who came to hear Sabine. Regardless of having just ancestors from Germany - many other countries are Germanic in nature, etc. Thank you all for supporting this attempt to put on a specialized seminar. We were concerned at how it would go - and I think that the place, the sack lunches or order lunches went well. The library staff could not have been more helpful. In our effort to keep the costs down, I hope that all feel this went well and can be done again. If so - we can bring in more well-known speakers. Thanks heavens for Chris (Carla Jerur's son) - leave it to a 11 yr old kid - he hastened to tell me that he will be 12 in July! When the lapel mike went dead, he said - maybe it needs a battery. I asked him how he knew and he said he was smart. Smart he certainly is and a joy to be around. Wasn't he great with selling the raffle tickets and the drawing? Maybe we can talk Carla into making him a member. Nice young man! Thanks to John and Laura for the cookies (and the people that brought them) and the pretty display. We can always depend on them. You could tell they were all good as there were mainly crumbs left.. Thanks to EWGS members for supporting us in bringing Sabine to be with us. Bette

I know the board tries hard to know what the members are thinking, but what did everyone on the list that went to the seminar think of the format where everyone brought a sack lunch or went to the snack bar (or elsewhere) to buy your own lunch?? Seminars at hotels cost quite a lot just for the meal and the room rent is more if they do not provide a meal, so this is a great way to keep the cost down. More Seminars like this one [ ] Hotel Seminar with meal [ ] Hotel Seminar without meal [ ] Other comments??
Shirley & Bette I really enjoyed Sabine Schleichert Saturday. Finding the place seems to be the key in most European research. I was real lucky that my grandfather had left a notebook with his address in Denmark, which not only included the parish name but also the farm name in the parish, and once I found the parish they had a lot of records on my grandfather and his parents and grandparents. Charles
www.wwiimemorial.com Have you checked out the World War II site online? You can still register your loved one's name at this site, too. The name is then available online on your PC as well as at the WW II Memorial Registry in Washington, DC for everyone to look up. We were just in Washington, DC last week and the memorial for WW II is inspiring: so many veterans, many in wheelchairs, greeting other veterans of different branches of the service, as their family, of all ages, listened to every word they spoke.
