Oh, Frances - I am soooo sorry that you had to miss this particular workshop. She was very very good and all of us long time researchers learned alot from her. We will definitely have her back as she was quite good. BTW - there are some of her handouts available for $1.00 (I think) just for the printing costs. Have Shirley save one for you at the next meeting. IF WE ORDER 20 MORE JACKETS (20X$16) WE'LL SPEND $320. THEN IF WE SELL THE 13 (7 ARE ALREADY TAKEN, REMEMBER) 13X25 IS $325. SO AN ORDER OF JACKETS WILL BE PAID FOR......... OF COURSE, IF WE SELL THEM. THE MONEY STILL TIED UP WILL BE IN THE POLO SHIRTS AND I'M CONFIDANT THAT THEY'LL GO IN THE SPRING. I'LL BE WEARING ONE.....ANYBODY ELSE ON THE BOARD????????? I have received this from 2 lists now! It is important to all of us. Bette Please pass this along to your lists. We need to get this information out to the public. his was posted on Ancestry Daily News. You can find it online at www.ancestry.com/dailynews Issue: October 7, 2004 Immediate Action Requested Legislation in Congress Seeks to Restrict Access to Birth Records; FGS Recommends Writing to Your Congressional Representatives The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill, House Resolution 10 (H.R. 10), which seeks to restrict access to birth certificates. This bill, which purpose is to respond to the threat of terrorism, is on a fast track to passage and has been voted on by several committees already. Your help is needed now. David Rencher, Chairman of the Record Access and Preservation Committee, a joint committee of the National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies, has sent a letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman Dennis Hastert, recommending an amendment to the bill as follows: "However, nothing in this Chapter 2 shall be construed to require a State to change its law with respect to public access to (A) non-certified copies of birth certificates, or to (B) birth certificates or birth records once a period of 100 years has elapsed from the date of creation of the certificate or record." A copy of the letter is available on the FGS site at www.fgs.org/rpa/formalactions.htm. To view this bill, go to http://thomas.loc.gov. Enter HR 10 in the search box for "Bill Number." Action Is Needed Now Because this bill is moving toward passage so quickly, it is urged that the genealogical community take action immediately and let their representatives know that they are in support of David Rencher's amendment and the FGS position in this important matter. To find your state representative's contact information, go to www.house.gov/writerep/. How Should I Word My Letter? While you should word the letter in any way that is omfortable for you, it is recommended that you include the following as a portion of the letter: "While I support the intention to increase security to protect the U.S. from terrorists and those who wish to improperly take U.S. identities, I am concerned that those researching their family's history continue to have access to non-certified birth records. Therefore, in order to support HR-10 I ask that you amend HR-10 Section 3063(d)(2) by adding the following wording to the existing paragraph: 'However, nothing in this Chapter 2 shall be construed to require a State to change its law with respect to public access to (A) non-certified copies of birth certificates or to (B) birth certificates or birth records once a period of 100 years has elapsed from the date of creation of the certificate or record.' I believe that this additional language is imperative so that the states do not react by restricting all certificates to comply with the law, rather than dealing with certified as opposed to non-certified birth certificates. This proposed amendatory language would remind them that they can and should be treated differently."
Juanita and Linda, You guys did a FABULOUS job with the Holdings Book, and I for one thank you tremendously much!!! I hope all EWGS members will open their eyes and realize that they need in their own little hands a copy of this finding aid!! Well, I, too, thought the seminar was wonderful. Not only was Leslie extremely well rehearsed for her talk, she was extremely prepared and experienced. I can't think of one single person who could not have benefited from her talks. Not only was she experienced, she articulated in such a way that she was understandable and very helpful with questions. I am in hopes that everyone else was so motivated with her talk and helpful information on other avenues of research that we can have her back again - maybe next year. For those who missed this seminar -- I hope you won't miss another. Super!!!
Well I really thought there were more than three people on the list at the seminar Saturday. I had a good time also, and my family was in Campbell County Tennesse also. My Campbells and Vanderpools came from North Carolina, and the Lo(w)es and Swopes from Pensylvania and West Virginia all to Campbell County Tennessee and then they all went with James Moad to Ray County Missouri. Saturday night Jacque and I went to the symphony and after that I checked my Vanderpool file and sure enough, I had an Ali Smith, and a bunch more Smiths all from this area. Sent her an E-Mail. I did think the sack lunch idea was good, and the church has a good meeting room. Did like the vege and fruit trays also. Charles
I have had so many people tell me that they learned more from Leslie than they had in a very long time. After we have researched for awhile, then it becomes such old hat, that I feel we begin to forget our basics. But Leslie certainly did motivate many of us who have researched for so long. And that is great for we needed that. I thought she was great - and she enjoyed herself, being happy to come back anytime she can. Thought the vege trays were a nice touch and went over well, as same as the fruit trays. We worked as a society to clean up ad that was so beneficial to EWGS. Personally I was very comfortable with the place. Hope all felt the same. Bette
Charles I agree with everything that Doris said, I really felt motivated. I think a new approach was what we all need. Several people have told me the same thing. I think the "sack lunch" was a good way to save money and I did not hear anyone complain about it.Did You? My husband and I used to NEVER miss the October meeting because we loved the educational programs. I can't go now because my Grandchildren have their Octoberfest on the same day EVERY year. They are totally disappointed if I try to get out of it and I feel family has to come first. It wouldn't help me to have it the 2nd Saturday because that is my DAR meeting and I am treasurer of the Esther Reed Chapter for this year and next and was for the last 2 years. I just sit and feel sorry for myself!! I thought it was a great day, and I learned more Saturday and got more inspiration than I have in the last five years. I think she was a wonderful speaker, and wish she was coming back again next week! The church is nice, and conveniently located (once they finish repairing the streets). Has anyone ever asked them about furnishing the lunch? They might be willing to do that for not too much expense, and it would give them a chance to make money too. I'm sorry more people weren't there. It was their loss, and I think either Bette or I in the December Bulletin should let the members know that. How does everybody else feel? Charles, I went to EWGS web site and could not open or print the appliciation for membership. Not sure why. I haven't had any trouble with the other programs that I have dled lately. HELP!! Smiling. Well did everyone enjoy the Seminar Saturday?? Anything you would do differently next time? Like the building? Sack lunch or catered meal?? Like the speaker? Want her Back? Comments?? Since several of the officers are here lets make it an open discussion. so maybe more can come to the next seminar. Charles
Donna Potter Phillips and Lethene Parks, both EWGS members, will be giving an all-day seminar up in Colville, Saturday, Oct 9th, on the topic of MIGRATION. It's gonna be a good day!!! For more information click upon this link: http://www.newgs.org/seminar.htm
To all: Please nobody feel blighted that Melodie Hall and her Creative Memories supplies won't be at our October workshop......nor will ANY other commerical vendors. Remember our place for this workshop is a church. Being a non-profit church, they CANNOT have commerical vendors doing business on the property. So it was not a slam at Melodie or any other long-time EWGS friend/vendor. Just tiz the way things is these days. According to the Genealogy Bulletin the Allen County Library has finished their building but not the construction, it will still take another year to finish, and they will not move into the space till 2006 from their temporary quarters. Sounds like when we were at the old Pennys building while they rebuilt the Spokane library. Charles
Anyone else see Dick and Shirley Oakes on the Jerry Lewis Telathon?? Nice to see you Shirley and Dick. Charles
Well we had a good time, only 13 people came, so we had a small group, but were pretty busy. Anyone here remember Ralph Moss. I got a request for a bible record submitted in the June 1981 issue of the bulletin by Ralph Moss, E 1428 Broad, Spokane, WA 99207. Not a current Member. Charles P.S. I have a copy of that issue from a White Elephant sale
Dick and I will be there, however, we were told that it was a re-aired program or pre-packaged, and that we will not appear on television. However, do plan to watch, make your pledge, but don't look for any of us....we'll be behind the wall.
