    2. Charles M. Hansen
    3. Bette Topp received this E-Mail today and asked me to pass it on: From Dennis Fredrickson, Spokane Library: "Bette - I wanted to alert you to the Town Hall Meeting at the Downtown Library on Tuesday, November 9 in meeting room 1a at 5:30. It will be about the library's budget and schedule changes and open hours for all branches. It is an opportunity for your membership to make suggestions to the library board regarding hours and express how you regard the importance of the Downtown Library." To all the list - thus town hall meeting will be at 5:30 and the miltary class on War of Mexico begins at 6:30 on Tuesday the 9th. I hope that many of you will attend so that the library will see how important it is for us to keep "our home". Otherwise, we may not have a place for EWGS meetings....Please do make the effort. Bette P.S. The Branch meetings are being held now. Monday was at East Central Community Center Wednesday November 3 Indian Trail Library Thursday November 4 South Hill Library Wednesday November 10 Hillyard Library Thursday November 11 Shadle Library All These are at 5:30 also Charles

    3. Hi Charles: Thanks for keeping us updated on the Library Budget Problems. None of these choices will be easy. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that they should try to keep all branches open at least part of the week. Terrible to close a branch permanently! The downtown library is of utmost importance, but if they have to close part of the time, it should be on Monday. (Maybe a bit of personal prejudice involved here!) To me, the library, police and fire departments are not negotiable items. Without these, we have no viable city. And to Tim Eyman, I can only say "Thanks to you for causing this whole dreadful problem." All responsible citizens need to realize that we don't get anything free. We need to pay for it. I detest him for creating this problem in the first place. OK - that's my sermon for today! Doris

    3. Last Wednesday I went to the Library Board Meeting for October and they had just been informed they will receive about a million and change less than last year. The library staff came up with an option of closing (mothballing) Hillyard, East Side and Indian Trail Branches which comes pretty close to the million and change, other item on chopping block is the outreach program. The outreach program goes once a month to the various senior centers and nursing homes and delivers books and tapes to people that cannot for what ever reason get to the library. The Library board wanted some more options and so Monday at 4 PM the staff came up with 4 other options. Option 1.1 was to just close East Side and Indian Trail keeping Hillyard open the full five days it is now and cutting the Materials Budget. Downtown would stay open the full 6 days. Option 2 is to close Downtown 1 day (That day is either Saturday or Monday and NO decision on that yet) Shadle and South Hill open 3 days a week, Hillyard, Eastside and Indian Trail open 2 days, using the staff from Shadle and South Side to staff the three smaller branches on the 2 days they are open. The Library Board favors this option, but will not make a final decision till 4PM November 15th. Option 3 Downtown stays open 6 days branches are same as option 2 above. Difference of $140,000 less in Materials Budget. Option 4 Downtown open 3 days, Shadle and South Hill open 5 days, Hillyard, East Side, and Indian Trail open 2 days, so downtown staff goes to small branches 3 days. All of these options still close the outreach program, but the board is looking to the capital budget for $100,000 a one time cost of laying off the staff at Hillyard, East Side and Indian Trail which happens in all the options also. In the next two weeks they will have a meeting at all 5 branches and Downtown for the public to comment. Charles

    3. Lisa....just so you know....the historical society and genealogical society are two separate entities and have access to different records. You may want to check with both. The historical society is known as the Stevens County Historical Society and the genie society is the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society. Both are based in Colville. Basically the historical society checks only the records that they have in their collection, while the genie society checks records in their own collection and at the courthouse, through family if they are still in the area, and any other sources we can think of depending on what information is being sought. In checking some of the NeWGS indexes, I see that the Hall and Oakes families were listed in the early territorial censuses for Stevens Co. If you would like us to look for something specific, please contact me directly at sdechant@newgs.org and we will be happy to help you. ....Susan Dechant At 05:03 AM 10/13/2004 -0600, you wrote: >______________________________X-Message: #4 >Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2004 20:04:17 +0000 >From: lisa.judd@comcast.net >To: WA-EWGS-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [EWGS] Oakes Family > >Hi Shirley, >Thanks very much for the info. They did some research for me not long ago. I signed up on this list looking for information around TriCities & Ellensburg where I was born. 3. Hello, I am looking for any information about the William & Olive (Hall) Oakes family who came from Maine and settled in the Colville area around 1880. There is a Washington Bio about him and a little about Olive's family. Winslow and Osner her brothers lived in the Colville area where there is quite a bit of info about the Silver Mine. I've lost track of Olive after the divorce and where she might be buried. Lisa Hall Judd El Sobrante, CA
