Dee Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 17:34:50 +0000 The VA has made it easier and faster for the public to get answers about family history, old war buddies or famous war heroes. The agency has put on the Web 3.2 million records for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. The VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator also has records for some state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999 (http://www.cem.va.gov/). The navigator includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service branch and rank if known, cemetery information and grave location in the cemetery. For all who don't know: you can go online to the HistoryChannel.com and sign up for their every-two-weeks blurb giving all their upcoming programs! When it comes to my mailbox, I always scroll through it, write down what shows I really wanna watch and then delete it. Tiz a good way NOT to miss anything special.... like the special on the Battle of Cowpens that Bette mentioned. Person on one of my lists sent me this she is in WV but don't know if the History channel is the same for the country but thought I would mention it - just in case.. Worth it to check it out. Bette They have been advertising that the Battle of Cowpens will be on the History channel tonight - the program is called the Battle field detectives. I thought it might be interesting to someone -
I am sorry that many missed the meeting on Saturday. We had a wonderful time with the sharing by many members. It was a fun time, I think, and I enjoyed it. It seemed as if others did also. Vickie Dalton also was a good speaker and we learned alot about the auditor's office. We will be in touch with her office about indexing the marriaga records from 1903 to 1974. Sorry that you all missed a fun afternoon. Hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season. Bette We finally had 1" of snow at 8:00 this morning which quit about noon. They really did miss that call, didn't they?
Anyone interested in printing your own Scottish Calendar?? Charles Scottish Calendar from Rampant Scotland It's that time of year again when the Scottish Pictorial Calendar, which you can print on your own PC, appears on the Rampant Scotland Web site. The choice of illustrations for each month is just as difficult as in previous years - there are EIGHT possible pictures for every month of the year. And the only cost is paper and printer ink! You can print any (or all) of the pages or select an individual photo of Edinburgh, Glasgow, a Scottish castle, pipers or flowers of Scotland, for every month of the year - or any of the other graphics available. New for this year is a picture of a butterfly (Scottish, of course) for every month of the year. There is even a selection of "cover" pages if you want to print copies as an extra present for someone. While the pages look better if you print them on glossy paper, any good quality paper should produce a reasonable result. And of course, even if you don't want to print a calendar, there are 96 pictures from Scotland to look at or download as desktop graphics. The link for the index page of the 2005 Scottish Pictorial Calendar is http://www.RampantScotland.com/cal2005/
On Saturday, at the EWGS December meeting - we will also have Vickie Dalton of the County Auditor's office speak to us. She will let us know what records are going to be available from the county, for us to index. If any - - Also - it will be fun to hear other people's experiences in researching and tips from them. This is the best part of networking - we can get a different perspective on what others are doin. Hope you will also remember to attend the military classes. Tuesday the 14th of December is the next one on War of 1812 with Shirley Penna-Oakes. They are definitely beneficial and you will learn alot. See you there - Bette
This is being held in Phoenix at the Wyndham Phoenix Hotel from 20-22 Jan 2005. Pat Ewers asked me if I would put this on the list. She is looking for a non-smoking female to share the hotel room with her. She is especially interested in the "Getting Your Ancestors Into Print" workshop that is being taught by Ann Carter Fleming and Kay Haviland Freilich. You will learn what to include as you write your family history, how to present it, how to document your findings and how to make the ancestors come alive. You can either work with a sample OR (and this is the best thing) you can bring your notes/material and start producing your own family history. If you are interested in going, contact Pat Ewers at 926-9867 or pgewers@omnicast.net.
The following is an announcement from the New England Historic Genealogical Society: NEHGS is pleased to offer free access to its New England Historical and Genealogical Register database on NewEnglandAncestors.org over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend! Normally only available to NEHGS members, the Register database will be accessible to everyone from Thursday, November 25 through Sunday, November 28, 2004. We encourage all NEHGS members to spread the word about this offering, and we hope that those of you who are not members find a veritable feast of ancestors in the Register database! Published quarterly since 1847, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register is the flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field. The online database includes issues from 1847 to 1994. The Register has featured articles on a wide variety of topics since its inception, including vital records, church records, tax records, land and probate records, cemetery transcriptions, obituaries, and historical essays. Authoritative compiled genealogies have been the centerpiece of the Register for more than 150 years. Thousands of New England families have been treated in the pages of the journal and many more are referenced in incidental ways throughout. The articles in the Register range from short pieces correcting errors in print or solving unusual problems to larger treatments that reveal family origins or present multiple generations of a family. Look for details on how to obtain free access to the Register in a special eNews bulletin to be sent out Wednesday, November 24. A link will also be available on that date on the home page of our website, www.NewEnglandAncestors.org.
Several of us attended the Library Board meeting last night. (Ruby, Lola, Charles, Donna and me) They definitely voted on the session that has the downtown "branch" open for 5 days a week. Tuesday - Friday 12-8 and Saturdays 10-6. So we safe for awhile. And it is my inner gut feeling that they will always have it open for that day. They have had very tough decisions to make and they are not happy with any of it. Hope you keep the board meeting date of Dec. 4th on your calendar. I want to wish you all a very warm, safe and tasty Thanksgiving. It is the beginning of the busy season and it will be nice to kind of catch our breath before we then start running. Happy Holiday to you and your families. Bette
I am forwarding this from Bette Topp. Charles Hi all - I am again putting out an SOS for support to keep the library open on Sat. It is evidently not a done-deal, no matter what the paper reported today. They are having another Library Board meeting on Monday, the 22nd at 3:00 p.m. in room 1A. (same room) It seems that those who wanted to have more days for the Hillyard and Eastside branches are going to fight to get them. It was a 4-1 vote according to the paper this morning. They do not feel that the downtown branch is as important. They need to be convinced that it is. There are probably just as many low-income residents that use the downtown branch as the ones mentioned above. I realize that it is very important those in the Hillyard and Eastside have access to their library as much as possible. As well as the downtown. They do not think the Northwest room is important either, so certainly they must feel that our collection is no big deal. We need to have numbers come and be prepared to speak to the fact of how important it is for the library to be open on Sat. Many other non-profit organizations use the main floor auditoriums. EWGS has spent almost 70 years building this collection FOR the library that helps the public as well. Perhaps someday many of the residents of these other areas will be coming to use the collection when they become interested in family and American history. So - please give a thought to helping us show a united front to the Library Board. I would appreciate any help at all from as many as possible. Note: November 29 the Library budget will come before the City Council and they can increase or decrease the amount PROPOSED by the mayor. So it is an important meeting also. Charles

Looks like we will get Saturdays, the board voted for Senario #2 which is 5 days downtown, 3 days Shadle and South Hill and 2 days Hillyard, East Side and Indian Trail, BUT there was one objection Rick White wanted the staff to see if it could possibly be worked out that Hillyard and East Side the two very low income neighborhoods could have 3 days each even if it means cutting another day downtown. So the next thing to vote on was which days each would be open and they tabled that till next Monday November 22 at 3pm so the staff can check to see if there is any way to open Hillyard and East Side another day. Problem is this means several people do not fit into a 40 hour week so this may not be possible man power wise. Jan said if they go to 5 days downtown it looks like they will cut Monday, not sure what will happen if they go to 4 days downtown. November 15 at 4pm is the November Library board meeting. They may decide on the budget for 2005 which can include shorter hours at the downtown library and all the branches. Charles
To all who were able to attend the meeting last night at the Library - they were several of us and think that it gave the Board a different aspect of the whole budget problem. It is appreciated, I know. Thank you, guys - Bette
Hi all - Do hope that many of you will be able to make it to the Library Board meeting in room 1a at 5:30 this evening. The paper made it sound alittle bit easier but we need numbers for support. Don't forget that we can then go to Juanita's class on the War with Mexico at 6:30 in room 1b. Hope to see you all tonight. Bette
