Source: Vt Gazetteer of Vt Heritage: National Survey Co., 1976 ( in "quotes") NEWFANE: " granted in 1753 by New Hampshire as "Fane" , first settled in 1766 Granted by New York as Newfane in 1774 " MY note: remember that Vermont was a battleground between NY and NH for the right to control VT.....so if your family lived in these years...you need to seach in NY as well as NH histories and records. Also, Vermont became a state in 1777. - ------------------------------------------------------------ BRATTLEBORO: " the first settlement was at Fort Dummer which was established in 1724 between what is now Brattleboro and Vernon. ( the location of the fort is now under water)" tidbit: "In 1758 the Indians attacked the home of Fairbank Moore on West River in Brattleboro". - --------------------------- MY NOTE: if you are researching this area in the corner of Vt-Mass-NH...be sure to check out Northfield, Mass, Hinsdale,NH, Winchester,NH, Vernon,Vt... My town history of Northfield(mass) can be found at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl ( look under the mailing list of Ct-River-valley-L) Cynthia listowner Sharon Ling wrote: > Hi Cynthia, > > Interested in Newfane, Brattleboro and Ft.
