    1. [VTWINDSO] Re: [CT-RIVER-VALLEY-L] Vermont Gazetteer of Vermont Heritage: WHITEHALL VT OR NY ??
    2. Cynthia
    3. Jeane (and Lists): The book (Vt Gazetteer)doesnt list a Whitehall in Vermont and neither does the Ancestry's REDBOOK: American State, county, town resources. If you look at a map of Vermont and NY....Whitehall is only few miles from the NY and Vt border....and in 1803 the town and state borders were clearly defined between NY and VT ......Vermont's Rutland County it has been since 1781 but PRIOR to that, from 1771-4 it was Charlotte County and the records will be in New York under Charlotte County and later Washington County(1773-8). .....from 1777-8....Rutland County was Rutlandshire and under Bennington County(Vt)... You have your work cut out for you.....he could have been born in Whitehall, NY OR under the jurisdiction of NY but today's Vermont. Your first bet may be contacting the: New York State Library Cultural Education Center Empire State Plaza Albany,NY 12230 as there is where you will find the Charlotte and Washington Counties' land, court, probate records for today's Rutland County in Vermont from 1771-1778. .....if they dont have any information for you then the chances are it could be he was born in Whitehall,NY... Perhaps someone on these lists may have other suggestions......... Good luck!! Cynthia listowner > Cynthia, > I've been hoping for this type of reference. I have an ancestor who d. > in NY in 1890......his death cert. says he was b. Whitehall, VT. 1803. > Everyone I've asked thinks it must be Whitehall, NY because no one can > locate Whitehall in VT..........can your book? > > Thanks, > Jeanne
