(no mention of settlers) - ------------------------------------- "NEWARK...charter was granted in 1781 and the town settled in 1800..today the town is sparsely populated" (Newark was in Caledonia County.....well known for mineral springs there was also a Newark Hollow which was in Newark). --------------------------- "GUILDHALL.. smallest shire town in Vt, settled in 1764 by people from Massachusetts who canoed 150 miles up the Connecticut River." - ------------------------------------------- "CHARLESTON...charted in 1780 to William Whipple and his shipmates. Whipple was a commodore from Rhode Island and was a Revolutionary War vet. The town was called "Navy" but the name was changed in 1825.
