SOURCE: VT GAZETTEER OF VT HERITAGE; National Survey Co., 1976 "SALISBURY: named for Salisbury Connecticut...town was settled in 1774 by Amos Story. he was killed shortly afer arrival by a falling tree. There was a lot of iron mined in Salisbury PRIOR to the Revolutionary War" - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- "DUMMERSTON: settlers came early as 1752 when most of Vermont was unchartered wilderness. It was chartered under the name of FULLUM but later changed to honor Gov. William Dummer of Massachusetts. Strangely, the town remained legally FULLUM for 160 years until 1937 when Dummerston was recognized by act of Legislature" My note: in old records you'd check out for the name of FULLUM as well as Dummerston...... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- " SUNDERLAND: the orginal grantee was a negro, his wife lived and died here at the age of 112. The first permanent settlement was made in 1766 by a party of men from Guilford, Connecticut but the town was not organized for another 30 years(1796)". - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "WARDSBORO: chartered in 1780 to William Ward of Newfane,Vt and organized in 1786. Samuel Hammond was one of the first settlers(and a member of the Boston Tea Party) , another settler was Robert Babcock, who died 1863 age 104...one of last survivors of the Revolutionary War" - -------------------------------------------------------------------- "STRATTON: settled in 1784 by emigrants from Massachusetts among whom were 7 Morsman and Patch families" - -------------------------------------------------------------------- SOURCE: Vt Gazetteer of Vt Heritage; National Survey Co., 1976 Cynthia listowner Joan Little wrote: > Towns of interest to me are: Salisbury, Dummerston, Sunderland, Wardsboro > and Stratton. > > Joan in NH > > -----Original Message----- > From: Cynthia <cyndylou3@earthlink.net> > To: CT-RIVER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com <CT-RIVER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: Wednesday, November 03, 1999 2:15 PM > Subject: [CT-RIVER-VALLEY-L] Vermont Gazetteer of Vermont Heritage > > >Lists: > > I bought a new book : the Beicentennial Edition : Gazetteer Vermont > >Heritage.........it lists each town in Vermont and background history > >which can be helpful in tracing Vermont ancestors.
