Two Vermont Hollows, A History of Gilead and Little Hollows, by Leyland E. Wood, Published by L.E. Wood, Randolph Vermont 05060, 1976, p. 188. Bibye Lake Cotton was a soldier of the Revolution. He was one of the organizers and supporters of the Old Christ Chruch and was also a signer of the oranization of the M.E. Church at Gilead. The Cotton family came to Bethel in 1790 and settled on land on the east side of the Thrid Branch. He first built a log house beside the stream. Later when the road was constructed from Bethel to Randolph, like the Benjamin Smith (brother-in-law) family, he moved up onto the new road and built a home where Robert Trask now lives. Though not a devout man, he in some way acquired the nickname of "Deacon." A highly respeted churchman traveling this way made a slight mistake regarding the meaning of Bibye's title and questioned him in regard to the state of religion in this vicinity. "It's in a damned low state," said Cotton. The churchman thought so too, and passed on. At a 4th of July celebration which the Old revolutionary veteran attended, a dinner was held at the old "White River House." A hungry crowd gathered around the talbes after the other coursed had been served the puddings were brougt on, hot from the oven. Cotton was served his plate and being too impatient to wait for it to cool, took a geerous mouthful. It was hotter than he expected and he rolled the pudding from one side of his mouth to the other to prevent it from burning him. Finally he spit it into his hand and laid it beside his plate. One of his fellow veterans who had watched his actions with considerable interest ventured to ask him what he was going to do with the pudding by the side of his plate. "Keep it to light my pipe with, by God," came the quick reply. Bibye was held in high esteem as a citizen and was involved to a considerable extent in management of public affairs of the town of Bethel.
